What kind of meanness was necessary for things to work out like that?
My kid is 16 yo atm, and he already declared that he feels good enough with us to stay "home" as long as possible.

I guess this is life laughing at us with it's "no good deed goes unpunished" remark.

What meanness? If you do a good job as a parent, your offspring upon reaching adult-hood should be doing adult things and not continuing to use their family as a crutch.

Your success is them leaving and not needing you. Your failure is having a child into their 30's.
