Well, in order to make and sell something at a profit, they have to cut corners somewhere, hence why these pies are round and not square.
And how is that bad? Wrap it around stuff and get masticating old boy

I'm a keen masticater but if I want a pie then I go for puff pastry all the way.
While I love puff pastry, if I'm in a hurry shortcrust is the way to go for a lot of things (pasties, quiche, pies)- especially so since I can use cheaper margarine as the fat (which would be impossible in puff which is chilled butter all the way, resting and re rolling).
I even like a soggy bottom!

Probably not the rice crispies...
Another tip is cooling- sometimes a seemingly soggy bottom is just steam wrecking the pastry. Get it out and quite often it will crisp up.
