State of the Game

Ah - Star Scam - the slide show that keeps on taking

they got clouds you can fly thru though !

I wish elite had some drive to make the environments we do interact with a bit engaging and immersive with the limited ways available ... Fuel scooping should be a frightening and dangerous experience .....dodging plasma arcs and slicing thru the stellar atmosphere like a fireball, clouds of gas expelled from the surface to interact with to collect fuel..

not the borefest waste of time it currently is.

thing is, elite's gonna be dead in a year and that leaves star citizen and no man's sky... and no man's sky doesn't do joystick flying.

Can I strongly suggest that we avoid talking about SC. Here's the thread for those who do:

It's okay to talk about NMS as they have:

I swapped most of my Elite time for DCS. Sunny days, lots of joystick flying, helicopter you're piloting tries to kill you with absolutely no warning. What's not to love!?
I was delighted to get off the ground in DCS. Landings however.....

Here's one of my best from IL2:

The undercarriage failed due to battle damage. Honest guv!

...and MSFS'20 is on my list too...

Looks like the f15 I forgot to put landing gear down on!

I decent flight time in a few modules and I still fluff landings in bad conditions. They really are tough. You have to throw yourself at the ground fast enough to still have lift, it's insanity!

Well, except with choppers, those can slow down to a hover, develop a nice mature vortex ring state, and throw themselves at the ground without your help.

They have flowering genital plants too!

I'm getting kinda over SSD raid6's though. I think i'm just going to set them all up as separate drives and then use lvm to make them look like one. dealing with offline unrecoverable sectors is getting old.

I bought NMS, and keep updating it, but just can't get into it, no idea why, it just feels wrong somehow. I like the bizarre colour schemes, very 70's sci-fi book cover / Prog rock album cover. I will give it a another try, and see how I get on, but it just feels a bit arcady / mobile phone game

The textures in the first pic for the ground are shocking, and as for the alien, if that is what we can expect from FDEV, then please, don't bother!

I read a newspaper story years ago and one paragraph really stuck with me. I kept it stuck on my refrigerator until it finally disintegrated, but I'd committed it to memory.

"All my life since I can remember I've been munching on rats," said farmer Burton Voss, 68. "If you didn't know what you was eating, you wouldn't know what it was."

So much truth in those few, brief words.

You said that a while back...

yea, but replacing with name brand ssd's works... but since there are still non-name brand ssd's in the raid, it's still periodically misbehaving.. and by that i mean that the data it writes ends up corrupted at the hardware level and it doesn't seem to see that at the OS level. until i do a manual full raid check - which takes about an hour. The crappy ssd's are really to blame, but on the same hand, i'm not sure those crappy ssd's would be so annoyingly bad if they were solo drives.

Are you looking for redundancy or just storage space?

both, hence raid 6 and not raid1 or raid 0. And raid10 didn't seem worthy.

But awhile ago, i've just gotten into the habit of using a massive spinner drive to backup the raid anyway and then disconnect it so it's offline. It's periodic, so i'd potentially lose some stuff in between backups. but i'm just storing media on the raid ...so no biggy if it is lost.

will be nice to have like 3 extra TB of ssd storage by just going lvm vs raid6.

nms is probably miles ahead of fdev when it comes to procedurally generated npcs (as unappealing as they may look to you). You dont have to worry about expecting anything like nms from fdev.

Lets look towards maybe having our plants be a bit less like a static non-interactive object before considering procedural (animal-type) aliens. Pretty sure elite's will all be specific and hand-made.
