Steam figures = LOL (but still...)

Does this 1.4mil number include base ED or is it just for Horizons.

Myself I would like to see figures on ED vs Horizons owners out there as I feel that would be more relevant numbers to spout around.

EDIT I actual used the link for steamspy in the OP and it seem they have only one entry which is for Elite Dangerous Horizons..didn't find anything for Elite Dangerous the base .....

Elite: Dangerous

Horizons

In my post above, I assumed that 1.4m was ED only, though my player retention % was based on a combined units/player-count from both ED and EDH.

I think the 1.4 is total units ED + EDH but perhaps someone here will post a link for the figure. Steam ED figures are about 600K and EDH are about 60K. As I remember ED figures were much stronger at this point than EDH but that is only my memory of the figures. If ED steam does represent nearly 50% of units (either direct or transferred in via steam key) then EDH does not seem to have done as well as ED by some margin. I assume that Steam will put EDH on sale at some point and EDH figures will then improve a bit.

BTW: If you register for SteamSpy (free) you get a better data snapshot and more history, ED does have an entry as well as EDH. EDH appears not to have added many sales for at least a week so make of that what you will.

I realize this is just steam sale but this doesn't bode well for FDs ability to get more cash off of seasons/expansions.

ofc ED owners are more than EDH. From my personal view, crafting and other goodies of Horizons (apart from planetary landings) should be a part of ED and not EDH. But the most important of all, you can't expect us to pay 50-60 dollars for EDH, only 1 year after the release of the original game, (which costed the same amount), which feels still totally in development, lacking meaningful content, with countless new or reappearing bugs...

I will personally buy horizons on generous sale, like 15-20 euros or smthg. Not before than. Not in a hurry at all! After all my computer doesn't support Horizons in the first place...so I need to upgrade the computer first and then buy it in an Easter or Summer sale.

Difficult to say. Some people won't want to buy at the current price, some will have had enough of ED and don't want EDH, some will want to see much more of the content of season 2 before committing so won't buy-in until later this year (assuming they like the stuff that appears over the next few months). EDH figures will be better by the end of the year but by how much??

Perhaps, you also need to consider some people wont even buy it on sale but will rather wait till next season3 comes out and just buy that as presumably season 3 will include base, game, horizons and season 3.

Otherwise the player base will become so fractured and spread out as more seasons are added things will become difficult.

For myself that what I am doing, I will wait for a sale where it wont cost me more than 20CAD for horizons but more likely will just skip it altogether and wait for season 3 if s3 has interesting things in it.

Now just last week someone linked an article showing STEAM had 400,000 ED players, yet this shows 61,000 and is up 3000+. WIsh these STEAM sites could get together and get their facts straight. Man, can't find the link from last week.

Steamspy estimates "676,154 ± 17,633 owners" for the base game on that link. I suspect you're reading the estimate of how many have loaded it up in the last fortnight through the Steam front-end.

(edit - no, you're reading the 61k number for how many have Horizons in Steam, sorry)

"these STEAM sites"

You might do well to read Sergey Galyonkin's caveats regarding Steam data analysis:

http://steamspy.com/about

For example:

"For your convenience on every game page you can see a margin of error for this game converted to actual users. It will look this way: Owners: 7,000,000 ±200,000. Please, take this margin into consideration every time you're using Steam Spy's data."

Elite: Dangerous
Owners: 676,154 ±17,633
Players total: 618,910 ± 16,872 (91.53%)

Elite Dangerous: Horizons
Owners: 61,480 ±5,323
Players total: 55,549 ± 5,060 (90.35%)

It's looking like the retention rate of ED to EDH is very very low.

And bought the original Game on Steam, but Horizons on the Frontierstore .. like I did. :)
I've registered the steamcode you get from the frontier store however, since I had launcher issues with the non-steam game. If it wasn't for that, I'd never have registered it in steam.

It's looking like the retention rate of ED to EDH is very very low.

It looks like steam should stop collecting data. :p
It's just terribly flawed.

- Horizons wasn't even available on Steam for some time and I'd guess the early adopters got it from the frontier store and never bothered with steam.
- The incentive to get Horizons for the "average player" is not all that great at the moment due to it's "piece by piece" approach.

Space Dandy, it's looking like you perhaps haven't considered:

- Frontier is a British company and many, many supportive British owners (not to mention other supportive fans of other nationalities) have stated very clearly on this forum that they have deliberately bought EDH direct from Frontierstore rather than allow a third-party to take a cut of future funding for the game they love. That's customer loyalty for you.

- Lifetime passes bought via Frontierstore (and Kickstarter Backers) will not show up in the figures for ED or EDH unless they obtain Steam key. Again, many many players have stated they have deliberately not redeemed their Steam key, and will not do this in future.

- You need to compare like-with-like: ED has been out on Steam for 10 months whilst EDH for only 6 weeks

It might be more informative to:
1. compare ED's 6 week owner total to EDH's 6 week owner total
2. wait until EDH has been out for ten months and then compare today's ED owner figure of 676,154 ± 17,633 with the EDH owner total on that date

I stated in a previous post that I realized this was steam sales only, still with the amount of drama in the horizons price thread we can conclude there quite a few people that didn't buy Horizons, doesn't matter if these are not the definitive numbers, it's still a good indication that horizon sales do not do nearly aswell as the base game sales.

Now if that number goes up that's great but I think it will take a very good sale indeed for that to happen. You also have to consider the UK isn't the center of the world and its money value is quite high which whether people wish to admit it or not is an obstacle to worldwide sales numbers.

Another thing, people need to stop bringing in the LTP, these peoples money has been used/collected already what FD should be concerned with is their ability to raise NEW funds via these season/expansion sales.

May I suggest that we all stop these highly speculative threads? The steamspy data are just a very small part of the picture when evaluating the success or failure of ED. Basically, you can find supportive data for any opinion you might have in these matters.
