Yeah, I have absolutely no positive things to say about this; I completely agree with Jezzah and popuptoaster...It's a waste of time and resources. -Time and resources spent on 'the Expansions'.
I hope so, because that was one of the key attractions of having it on Steam. (People report that updates through Steam are often far faster than those done through Frontier's overloaded servers. Also no need to run a separate updater program for each game, as everything can be done through Steam.)
Another advantage is you can see which of your friend's is playing ED, without having to launch ED yourself. (You can even do it from your mobile, thanks to Steam's Android client.)
There are probably other advantages.

Damn, why all the Steam haters? If you have zero interest in Steam or obtaining a key then move along, this topic holds no interest for you (i guess there are unreasonable folk on both sides of the fray). Some of the advantages i can think of off the top of my head are the launcher auto-updating, writing reviews on steam, quickly seeing which folk on your list owns the game and probably most importantly is linking the community together better than before. Glad you see the importance Steam plays (and has played) on Pc gaming, thanks lads.

Future development money?? i dont believe this has cost FD anything if im wrong on this then i apologize,I actually think the steam keys are a good thing,people who have played ED longer than the original Steam boys can now give more favorable reviews when they get their Steam keys..more positive reviews =more sales which then equals more money for updates etc...nice one Frontier cheers

I plan on doing the same. My hope for Steam integration is the use of their CDN, screenshot function and simple convenience, not because I want to give Valve money FD deserves.

I'd be surprised if the amount of time required for this was a single meeting "Okay, what do we do about keys?" contact with Steam "This is what we'd like to arrange..." waiting for a reply, and their legal department dealing with the details. Seriously, I doubt any sleep was lost by anyone actually working on the game. Just because the forums wouldn't shut up about it doesn't mean the people there were just as obsessed, or that they needed to be.
Thank you! It would also be really nice that when the game is moved to Steam, that it might show Hours already played.
Ive read it Captain,"We always appreciate it when you buy direct from our store because it means we can put more into supporting and developing Elite: Dangerous" is this what you mean mate?,if so many of us including myself have purchased directly from FD and so weve already given our money towards future updates,and i personally will purchase addons from FD directly,if by giving me a steam key it has cost FD directly then im more than willing to purchase something from the store EG a Mug or Skin pack to compensate.(Id be surprised though as theyve added that ALL future purchases directly from FD will include a steam key)And like i said earlier Captain when we get our keys those who choose to (and i certainly will) can then post a very positive review of the game and hopefully with such reviews get more and more people interested in ED therefore increasing revenue for Frontier..thats my hope anyway.
