SteamVR and HTC Vive Support confirmed!!

Great news! Now I wonder if Oculus Rift support will be updated before christmas... I miss Elite Dangerous so much...

I'm a little concerned about future OR support. Not a word about it since 0.5 runtime, except to warn us not to use newer sdk versions.

UPDATE: just twitted from oficial Elite account: "We're still working with Oculus. We'll keep everyone informed once we have more information." At least they are on it.

This is interesting... The way the wind is blowing the Vive is starting to look like a more tempting prospect than oculus! My reasoning:
1. It's out at xmas 2015 (limited)
2. It uses Steam VR which is an existing VR software platform and is integrated into the Steam store already
3. Elite Dangerous could end up running on a Vive before it runs on the oculus (speculation, but bear in mind FD haven't confirmed oculus support at launch yet)
4. Steam VR (therefore Vive) is OS X and Linux compatible whereas oculus dumped development on other platforms to concentrate on the PC.

Has anyone actually used the Vive? It seems to have quietly sneaked up into being a front runner for ED....

Ah, that's good to know about Rift support; i was starting to think they had abandoned it!!

This is a great announcement,

The best bit for me is this quote

"We are invested in making the world’s best VR experience with Elite: Dangerous, and will remain committed to VR."

That is great news indeed

As for Linux support libraries are there, however Vive hasn't released any Linux/SteamOS drivers yet. I don't doubt that they will, but I suspect they will come a bit later than expected. They have reaffirmed Vive VR support for Linux during Gamescom.

As for OS X...due of Apple stonewalling OpenGL development and situation is a bit difficult. However I expect everything there, including VR, to move on Metal, as it make more sense performance wise.

Why do you miss it? I am still playing it. Even on windows 10. Still works fine, just a few hoops to install the 0.6 oculus SDK and run in extended mode and it all works fine.

Also worth mentioning:

5. Rumor is that the Vive is a slightly "higher end" device than Oculus Rift. Perhaps more expensive as well, but that may not matter so much for some people.

Oculus will be getting full support, I think it's just that the 0.7 update with Direct monitor mode only broke the way elite rendered to screen. It's interesting as I don't know how the Vive does that - does it do direct or do you have to run in extended mode?

You have to remember that the Rift is still a dev kit... just one that was sold openly unlike the Vive. They both seem to have strengths and weaknesses.

The new Oculus VR Script that is coming out soon is apparently incredible and easy to integrate. Well it is John Carmack designed.

The Vive looks to be out pre christmas and the Rift in the spring.

My main concern is can buy the Vive and run my non Steam bought E:D ?

Well the specs are near identical. The Vive however has 2 lighthouses you need to position in your room at opposite corners up high and allows you to do walk around vr - but still going to be tethered... The rift is aimed as a sit down item with a single camera - but the controllers look incredible for the rift.

I am expecting the Vive to be a lot more expensive - $500+ over $300 but we may find out the Rift price and release date this week at it's developer event.

To be fair, vive seems slightly more resolved then oculus and uses existing and finished tech that isn't still in development unlike Oculus.

I understand why people are annoyed, but it isn't really Elite that is to blame that Oculus made a radical shift in their stuff.

John Carmack being in charge of the software is a big reason i'm still on board with the Rift! :)
However, Vive having SteamVR is also a big deal i think (i really thought oculus would have gone down that route)!!

Interesting point about non-Steam games through Vive & SteamVR. You can add Non-Steam games in Steam and those games do work with other Steam services like Steam "Stream" and they certainly show up in your library in SteamVR mode so i think you may have a good chance.
The whole software interchangeable thing i'm fascinated to see how it will work (or not work!). The software platform for these VR systems (SteamVR or Oculus Home), may end up being the deciding factor in the long run!

It's going to be a very interesting 12 months! :)

Who's annoyed? It's still working for me? Just don't update the Oculus Runtime to 0.7 - Oculus is a Dev Kit and is still working.

How can vive seem more resolved? Hardly anyone has used it yet and I am fairly sure no one would say any of it is Finished!

I'll certainly be getting both. I've got both Rifts and a Cast AR too as I'm Dev'ing for them but yet to try the Vive.

There's a few posts about it about the forum and note I said annoyed :) that's all not angry or such, just annoyed :)
