"Stolen" occupied escape pod???

I scanned a planet's surface and detected a distress signal. The good samaritan that I am I went to investigate and found a ship's wreck and two occupied escape pods. The ambient temperature was 21 kelvin, so I don't think those escape pods would be occupied for very long. At least not by anything living. So I rescued those escape pods into the warmth of my ship, to be taken to the nearest space station.

However, in my inventory those occupied escape pods are marked as "stolen".

Stolen??? Yeah, I'm pretty sure the occupants are really upset that I "stole" their escape pods... with them inside, from the surface of a planet in 21 kelvin temperatures. I'm such a kidnapper, it seems. Perhaps I should make them "unstolen" and leave them on the surface and abandon them to their fates?

Now I'm wondering: What happens if I approach a space station with these "stolen" escape pods? Will they scan me and start shooting at me for having "stolen" these?

If I were to jettison these occupied escape pods I would feel like a murderer. (Not really, but come on, allow me some role-playing and immersing myself into the game...)

Weird Elite game mechanics..

You can slip into a station if you go 'cold', and sell them on the black market, Not sure if they're worth much.

You could abandon them near a parked police ship or other signs of civilisation & leave the instance before they degrade?

So the security will start just outright shooting if they scan stolen items in my inventory?

Talk about disproportionate retribution...

Come one.. Pad loitering is punishable by death in 3308...

Times changed. You dont steal escape pods. You never knew who's slaves are in there.

Ok, if it's just a fine, then it's ok. Those are very small anyway. And I'm feeling like a philanthropist, saving people even at the risk of authorities punishing me for my good deeds.

It is just a rationalization on my part - this mechanic is probably just another rough edge to the way the game operates, one that FDev couldn't be bothered to smooth over - but I've always believed that the people in those escape pods probably are expecting to be retrieved by their mates/squadron/relatives/designated retrievers. When we swoop in and take them, it is perceived as a type of kidnapping. Or something. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, that's been my rationalisation, too, but then one might think they could have had the common courtesy of using some sort of private emergency beacon, so that well-meaning people don't waste time going down to help them, only to find themselves harassed by their guard dogs. :p

If you need some explanation, then maybe those were escape pods with convicts or slaves that are considered private or state property and were waiting to be picked up. Maybe those were criminals who crashed their ship there after some bounty hunter shot them down and they are his to collect. If you like roleplaying, then you need to use your imagination.

I've encountered a similar situation, except I found 4 distress signals and only two of the escape pods I've picked up from them so far have been marked as stolen:

Since the cost of being a good Samaritan only involves a fine if I get scanned upon returning to civilisation, I don't mind too much, but this is really silly. I'm being punished for rescuing people? 🤦‍♀️

You are being punished for interfering with a crime scene :)

I agree the idea of stolen escape pods is pretty odd, but they have been around a long time & presumably it's supposed to be a moral dilemma whether you take them or not. IIRC you can't hand them in to search & rescue & can only sell them to a black market which can't be good

It's the inconsistency that bothers me most. Is there any rhyme or reason as to which pods are considered stolen or not?

Can't hand them in? Now that's annoying. Looks like I'll have to jettison them right outside a station where slaves are illegal, and imagine that some kind locals will pick them up. More fines, but I'm a billionaire now so whatever.

What if they're kidnapping victims and they've been left out there waiting for a ransom? ;)

Considering that I took them from the wreckage of a crashed spacecraft on an otherwise unvisited planet located at about 50 times 28ly from the nearest inhabited system, that seems unlikely. Not only that, but there was a distress beacon active at each site (that's how I found them after all), and I am ethically obligated to aid fellow spacers in distress.

That makes sense then. They have rescue insurance and their private service is already on the way to recover them. You are interfering in a sanctioned operation. What will they do when they turn up to find their clients have been shanghaied by some rando with impulse control issues? And what about the poor clients expecting to wake up in a first class recovery centre with champagne and rabbit slippers waking up in the hold of some potential murderhobo? ;)
