Housing:
Private base, where you can store and showcase your ships on surface. Purchase skimmer/turret defense, purchase niceties, giant bobbleheads, beacons to run around racing near the base and stuff like that. Store stuff. All expensive and redundant, yet asked for. Source of real cash revenue for extra cute architecture.
Somewhere to show off my ships. My own garage. I like that idea. And yes, give us something to do there as well, go on runs to gather resources to stock it, arm it, defend it. Maybe you even have to fight off some NPCs attacking your base now and then. Have peeps over to visit and help you out.
Wildstar gives you a chunk of land to play with, build some things on, spend money on in their store to get things that you can place at your home. I would rather have some game play activities associated with it though, which is why I've never messed with my Wildstar home. There was nothing to do but decorate.
Someone else mentioned Second Life. That is the epitome of building on your own personal land (for a price) and unlimited inventory (for free). Braben could have a small subscription fee (to pay for business costs) if people want to build. It could be your own mini-game within the ED universe. Especially for those who dont like people.

Another hook to reel in players.
P.S. I dont think FD MUST DO THIS RIGHT NOW! But I like the idea of more game play in the form of a personal base. It could be located in hyperspace or a system that only you could enter if you were the owner. It could be password protected for your friends to enter as well.
Some like the private base idea. Some dont. That's ok. I hope Braben expands his game according to what makes him the most money. It may not be what you want or I want or necessarily part of his original vision for the game. But hopefully the game goes in the direction of what the majority wants. I doubt Braben is worried about database expansion issues if the money rolls in to pay for it.
