Stutter Stutter Stutter since 1.3 - near stations, asteroids, and pretty much anything that has a model and collision

It's been over a year with the stutter, I think it's here to stay unfortunately. But, hey, we have CQC and PP! Who likes hot dogs?

I can also confirm its everywhere now, mostly in stations and res sites and super cruise. And has been an issue since I can remember.
......................As the stuttering continues I slowly go insane trying new and increasingly convoluted ways to banish it.
Also tried an earlier "stable" version for the NVidia drivers, turning back to 348.77..... Nothing helps.

I give my system 5 out of 5 Flimley points.....but the stuttering 0 out of 5 Flimley points.

Because this affects people with really high end systems I wonder what if FD made AI:

Supercruise is stuttery for me too.
And the player ships in supercruise are hilarious - they do "micro-jumps" back and forth.

This is universal, _everyone_ lags in supercruise is just a matter of how many ships are there.

If you are playing Solo you should be fine, since SC will only respawn "your ships", sometimes they bug and spawn extra ones then the lag begins even in Solo.

In MP just the NPCS + Players is enough to lag everything up.

ED has a performance issue related to networking and shadows, both need a HUGE Optimization asap.

I'm getting severe sound stuttering, but doesn't seem to affect frame rate. The sound cuts in and out, resulting in all sound effects (including the female computer voices) sounding very ssstttrrreeetttccchhhheeeddd. Has been this way since the 1.3 update. Doesn't matter if I run at minimum detail or ultra.

You're not alone, this MAY fix it: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=123256

PS: I did that and it only reduced the crackling, its kinda rare to happen now.

It is not our PC systems, given that XBone users are experiencing the same stutters along with all of our testing, it is within the game itself, either netcode issues, or some software issues.

I agree 100%! I've been observing this as well. I have a low end system and, usually, I get around 20 frames per second in systems, 10-12 in stations. Sometimes, my framerate will go as high as 40 fps in systems and 15 in stations. Other times, I drop to 15 fps in systems and less than 10 in stations. This is the same computer, same graphic settings. No other app running. I monitor the CPU activity on a regular basis to be sure that nothing is stealing CPU cycles from ED, yet, my framerate will vary. From my observations, it seems to happen when there are more people playing. Early evening, I will get good framerate. Then, as the evening progresses, my framerate will start going down. This is the same session, I didn't quit the app. Then, in the very late hours, like 12:00AM-1:00AM, framerate starts to rise again. There is no explanation for this except that the graphic performance is somehow tied to the servers. I'm not sure why it's not decoupled more. I understand that the servers are feeding the client but the graphic performances shouldn't depend on how fast the servers respond. There is definitely something up on the networking and servers load.

As a contrast, I've played WoW for many months on the same computer. I never seen any variation of the graphic performance whether I was solo somewhere or in a city with a lot of other characters. So, it is doable.

Despite how many times I've heard you say that throughout this thread, I went ahead and bought a PCI-E networking card hoping it would fix the stuttering. You know what it did? NOTHING. All i did was waste $40.

Since the last patch just last night i find the stuttering even worse, also there is some added lag i have never noticed before. I was at a station near LHS 3447 where there is a lot of other players and the game was nothing but stuttering...it was almost impossible to dock it was so bad.

It makes me so mad now there is no enjoyment left in the game, so unfortunately i won't be playing it until FD addresses the issue, if that even happens.

I too get these stutters, most obvious they are in asteroid fields, very noticable with some collector limpets out, as every stutter causes a collision warning and the limpets warping all over the place. They're up to a bunch of seconds, but luckily they're shorter in most other situations. Was completely stutter-free prior to PowerPlay.

Specs:

Win 7 64 Pro
Gigabyte GA Z77-D3H (BIOS v.23b)
Intel i5 3570k
MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G (353.06)
Crucial Ballistix Tactical 16GB CL8 DDR3-1600
Corsair Force GT SSD 120GB (Win) + Crucial MX100 SSD 512GB MU02 (Games/Sims) on an ASUS U3S6 PCIe x4 controller card
SB X-Fi Elite Pro (drivers dated 05 May 2010, ver 6.0.1.1375)
VIA HD onboard audio (drivers dated 04 Aug 2010, ver 6.0.1.8700)

I guess it's a blessing that they are now porting Elite: Dangerous to the XBox One. The stutter there will force them to fix these issues, and bring it back to the smooth as butter graphics and frame rates they had back in 1.2.

Here's to the future! Cheers!

Yea whatever it takes to get it fixed, I'm in..

I opened a ticket on this a white ago and I've had a dozen emails asking me to try things, sadly nothing has fixed it yet :(

I used to get it in alpha and early beta then it was fixed.. Until it returned in 1.3

Over the past day or so, I've been running some tests of my own and have finally managed to temporarily fix the stuttering issue, or at least minimize it greatly.

Before I go into any sort of detail, here are my specs:
Asus ROG Maximus VII Hero
Intel i5-4690 3.5 GHz CPU
Corsair Dominator Platinum 16Gb 1866 MHz RAM
x2 Asus DirectCU II OC GTX 780
Intel Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter (Ethernet card)
Samsung 840 series 240GB SSD
Seasonic X-series 1050w PSU
Asus 2560x1440 display
Bell Fibre 175Mbit/s download and upload

First, I bought a Gigabit ethernet card to bypass my on-board LAN in case that was a potential factor, however, it seemed to make absolutely no difference. So after a little research, i decided to give framerate limiting another shot. Well much to my surprise, it has helped quite a lot and i would like to share my 'solution'.
The third party software I'm using is RivaTuner Statistics Server which came with MSI afterburner, although I am not currently using afterburner. In RivaTuner, framerate limit is set to 90, but it seems to not effect the stuttering if it's set to other values. For me it was smoothest set to my refresh rate (59Hz), but unfortunately causes relentless screen tearing.
After having downloaded and installed RivaTuner, I also installed the latest Nvidia driver (353.30) and left SLI mode disabled. I have performed testing with and without SLI mode in Nvidia control panel. Bascally with or without SLI, setting a fixed framerate using the rivatuner software has helped for me, but here is my basic testing results anyway.

With SLI disabled (framerate set to 90):

using the following settings, there was very minimal stuttering but did generate some screen tearing or noticeable lag.
Fullscreen mode: Fullscreen
Resolution: 2,560 x 1,440
Vertical sync: Off
Frame rate limit: Off
FOV: Set to 100%
3D: Off
Model draw distance: 100%
Texture quality: High
Shadow quality: High
Bloom: Medium
Blur: On
AA: Off
Supersampling: X1.0
Ambient occlusion: Off
Environment quality: High
FX quality: High
Reflections quality: High
Material quality: High

Things I noticed:
* Borderless mode causes mouse tracking delay or sluggish movement.
* Seems to run smoother with model draw distance set to full as apposed to 50% or 80%.
* Noteable decrease in screen tearing when AA is disabled as apposed to SMAA.
* Stations without players had no noticeable stuttering, while stations with players generated a noticeable amount of stuttering.
* While flying, I only experienced stuttering issues when exiting SC into a station (lasting no more than 3 seconds) and potentially inside a station, should also be noted there was no interruptions while in SC.
* Did not notice any difference having PhysX set to CPU versus GPU.

With SLI enabled (framerate set to 90):

Using the following settings, there was very minimal stuttering and only generated a small amount of screen tearing when rotating in cirles inside a station.
Fullscreen mode: Fullscreen
Resolution: 2,560 x 1,440
Vertical sync: Off
Frame rate limit: Off
FOV: Set to 100%
3D: Off
Model draw distance: 100%
Texture quality: High
Shadow quality: Ultra
Bloom: Medium
Blur: On
AA: SMAA
Supersampling: X1.0
Ambient occlusion: Off
Environment quality: Ultra
FX quality: High
Reflections quality: High
Material quality: Ultra

Things I noticed:
* Much smoother gameplay with substatially less screen tearing, near perfect gameplay (for my particular harware configuration).
* Again, did not notice any difference having PhysX set to CPU versus GPU in Nvidia control panel.

I have not yet tested gameplay around asteroid belts or RES, but will test later.

I hope this will be of some help or at the very least give the devs more info for fixing this. I just felt inclined to share my results since so many people are having unpleasant experiences, and in my case, extreme frustration and a lacking desire to play the game at all. I sincerely hope FD will find a proper solution to, what i believe to be, networking issues. In the meantime, i guess all we can really do is play around with our own configs in attempt to at least keep these distracting graphical interruptions at bay.

Cheers

No problems until recently. Now my frame rate can be pathetic.

90 fps outside of stations
40 fps in stations
15 fps in the lift to the hangar deck
