Stutter Stutter Stutter since 1.3 - near stations, asteroids, and pretty much anything that has a model and collision

I have an Nvidia GPU on my laptop - it is very fast, and it runs when Elite is running. But in the graphics options in ED it is clear that Elite doesn't know it exists. It thinks I have on board graphics only.

Isn't this the issue?

My computer knows what hardware I have - no doubt a casual hacker could figure it out - but ELITE? Oh no, I have on board graphics only.

ED will optimise for that - thanks.

P*ss poor.

Edit: consider that ED has no idea of your graphics capabilities, this could explain a lot.

pps: how can the client program *not* figure out that I have a GPU?

Is this a separate graphics card? Onboard graphics can have either Intel, Nvidia, or AMD processors.

EDIT: If you have a separate card, try disabling your onboard graphics settings in the bios.

It is a gaming laptop - the GPU runs when Elite runs - it gets hot - it is doing the graphics for Elite - but in my graphics options Elite thinks I'm doing sums on an abacus...

Sounds like your onboard graphics is powered by Nivida so in essence Elite is reading it correctly and therefore, no problems since you only have 1 GPU

No, it reports AMD even though NV is running.

(that's Nvidia btw, not Nivida, that's like a hand cream.)

Sometimes you just have to run with it and laugh. :D

We don't use PhysX so I would be surprised if it makes any appreciable difference, but it's worth a try in case there's some driver issue.

Michael

Actually, it makes sense that physx might be impacting graphics perf. When you set it use the gpu, it does its physics calculations using the cards shaders so there's going to be some competition for resources with the game's own shader code. Just because elite isn't using physx doesn't mean that it automatically gets full use of the entire graphics card.

EDIT: It does seem to make a small difference, but then it may be the placebo effect :) I do still get some stuttering, but it now seems to be mostly when approaching planets as if the stutter is related to LODs. Unrelated, I also saw a foo fighter - anybody else want to take a look at the flittery little guy, this was at LHS 151. Only seems to appear in supercruise, when I dropped into normal space it vanished.

Sounds like ED is calling for something PhysX has reserved on the GPU? Maybe?

IDK anything about drivers etc. but, it did reduce stuttering for me. Maybe just a fluke, who knows?

One thing for sure, the stuttering has got to be found and killed. This kind of bug is too big not to fix, with whatever it takes.

Tons of stutters last night, mostly in RES but some in supercruise in systems with CMDRs (5-10) and some NPCs. I thought it was lag at first but I'm getting stuttering using headlook via my TrackIR 5. Not coooooooool bros..

i5 4690k @ 4.4ghz
16gb ddr3
7870 Ghz Ed.

Obviously I have an AMD Radeon, so there is no PhysX junk for me to disable. I highly doubt PhysX really has anything to do with this issue anyways (for obvious reasons on my end...).

Never had issues in RES before 1.3. Some stutters exiting hyperspace sometimes, sure. A few stutters here and there in supercruise, sure. But now I'm getting LOTS of stuttering in RES and much increased stuttering in supercruise as well (not just approaching planets anymore, just flying around).

edit: I even had the game crash on me tonight (complete with "submit bug report to FD" dialog - which I did submit). First time this game has crashed on me since...actually I can't remember it ever crashing. Maybe in beta? Anyways, it happened pretty quickly after my friend and wingman at the time exited the game (without leaving wing). But even if the crash isn't somehow related, the amount of stuttering is now noticeably worse, that's for sure.

edit 2: That same friend* got 2 black screens tonight, which resulted in the same "submit bug report to FD" dialog. After the first black screen crash he got another one immediately after restarting and rejoining the game - he saw his cockpit for all of one second before black screen/CTD. He rebooted his PC and was able to play after that, but I'd say that is really weird behavior as well. Something is going on.

*His specs are:

i5-2500k @ 4.6ghz
GTX 970
16gb ddr3

I'll just pop by to say that, for me 1.3 was silky smooth and had cured a lot of the stuttering. I tried 1.3.05 and the stuttering near planets was back big time. :( [2GB GeForce GTX 680, 347.09 drivers]
.

Michael Brookes talks about optimization on his latest Dev Update, I bet(HOPE) that's going to fix the stuttering for a lot of people.

I've just tried switching on V-sync and frame rate limiting (60Hz) while turning of 'blur', all in the game options... and all my stuttering went away. Happy days :)

I haven't found this near stations, but I have found this on all systems I have visited on uncharted space, I am exploring to the center of the galaxy and there is not a single sistem where the game stutters.

Here's a challenge:

Post a 10 minute (it can take five mins to show up for me) video of your ship spinning in the first training mission, or your favourite asteroid belt. The challenge being that it runs at a solid 60fps, with the detail is set to low if needed, and does not show a stuttering session or a regular stutter (the odd random stutter is fine).
