Subnautica

Is Subnautica huge.. I mean the area to play in. What comparison, perhaps, in size to other games.
I'm not into water games really, but have looked at this game on&off forever it seems, might dive in... [big grin]

No, it's not huge. It's and area of about 3x3 kilometers with cave systems going almost 2km deep. It's the rugged topography and caves what makes the game "seem huge".
But hey, if you don't enjoy diving, I'm not sure you'll find it alluring. :D

It's not big but you're rarely travelling very quickly so it feels very big. Also you won't be wishing it was ten times bigger when you're lost in a cave system with dwindling oxygen.

To be honest, if you're lost in a cave system with a dwindling oxygen, it really doesn't matter how big the map is. :D

I bought Subnautica a month or so ago and it's turned into the game I play on a daily basis now...
Mini-review here:
The pros:
  • Very atmospheric (you get a good sense of trying to survive in a strange alien water-world).
  • Good graphics and gameplay. Also playing without using online sources/help really adds to the adventure and accomplishment you get when you make some new discovery.
  • Difficulty and progression seem just right.
  • Great game for explorers - on one level it's similar to E.D. exploration: go somewhere + honk/scan. But in Subnautica the locations seem more varied and it feels like you are actually doing exploring, rather than just visiting...
  • Good mixture of exploration, resource management, base-building / tool-improving.
The cons:
  • I get a bit of nausea with this game (playing in VR), not too much, seems worse when walking for some reason. Can probably play for an hour at a time at most (which is probably a good thing actually...!).
  • Not sure about longevity of this game, I have 5 months in game time in elite, and have 1 day in Subnautica so far, but I get the impression total in game time will only be measured in days for me. Still that's a load longer than some other titles I've bought before...
Summary:
  • Basically, it's a great game. ;)

put aside 8 hrs (or stick on whilst working like i am) sit back and relax!

honestly it has made me really want to get into subnautica but with the new patch in beta which will allow me to reposition the ui in VR i need to wait as that makes me feel a bit ill as its too close.

It feels huge because it makes full use of 3d space. In terms of square Kilometers it's maybe not that large by open world standards, but in terms of *cubic* Kilometers, it has more, uh, "depth" than any game out there.

Its in a crater about 4 or 5km across and about 2.5km deep (at it's deepest point - which is in an underground cave anyway)... the actual crater itself is only about 500m deep.

It does not like multiple controllers being plugged in when attempting to play in VR (Rift), works fine with keyboard and mouse in pancake mode though.

Would you have to install Epic'c game laucher? Blah!

Yes of course. That's why it's free. Also Epic gives 80+% monies to the devs, so worth supporting maybe.

(Yes, they are all companies wanting to make money!! Even the devs!!!)

And 80% of 0 is? I mean yeah, if the store takes off might be worth supporting, but if it's a FREE game, then surely the dev cut is 80% of nothing, no?

The arctic follow up to subnautica is out next year early access very soon (TM). By giving the game away for free for a couple of weeks they raise their profile and will probably benefit in extra sales of the new one.
