Subnautica

This game intrigues me. It looks right up my alley as an exploration focused game. Every time I watch a youtube video on it the game looks terribly fun.

I'll probably wait until it goes on sale someday, but Subnautica will likely be my next game purchase.

I definitely recommend keeping it in your wishlist. :)
It's one of the best overall gaming experiences I had in last couple of years.

i got almost to the end of this game during its EA process. but wasnt able to cure the plague because that wasnt a feature in the game at the time.

Ive started playing it again since going gold and its still an awesome experiance.
Just build my first Cyclops. time to start exploring the dark deep.

Stick some bulbo plants in it and you've got yourself a mobile base.

A prefab base of thermal reactors a moonpool and a scanning room (with a couple of reinforcements) is also really handy stashed in lockers somewhere aboard the cyclops, a couple of power cell chargers and a vehicle upgrade console also come in handy.

So I convinced myself to finally buy Subnautica last Thursday night and since then it’s the only game I’ve played, and I’ve played a LOT of it to boot. This game is amazing! The sense of exploration, progression, and discovery is incredible. The world is so incredibly beautiful and engrossing to wander around in. Even the story is compelling in how it unfolds, it has a quality to it which oddly reminds me a lot of the early years of the TV show LOST. I’ve been uncovering new crafting recipes and technologies with a gradual yet persistent regularity, and this has greatly enhanced my desire to simply explore this amazing water planet. And the base building, I’ve sunk so many hours into building, re building, and refining my base. I’m finding that aspect of the game very fun. Actually all of the crafting and resource gathering is very well done. Nothing feels like a grind in this game to me, it’s all very fluid and natural feeling.

It’s the exploring though that has truly grabbed me by the horns. I absolutely love the scanner room in the base, what an awesome exploration mechanic! I tell the panel what to scan for and it pinpoints locations for the objects in a map room which can then be linked to my HUD allowing me to set out and search for them. It’s basically a heatmap with a linked finder reticle. FRACK do I wish Elite had something like this to help find things on planets!

I’ve barely touched the surface (pun intended) of what the world of Subnautica has to offer as I really haven’t ventured more than 800m or so from the crash site. I’m just now exploring the wreck of the Aurora but something tells me I’ll be playing this game for a very long time.

Elite might be taking a back seat for awhile…..

Subnautica is a really nice and amazing game w/ almost zero replaybilty (for me) once it's finished. You can't really compare this game to any large open-world games and to Elite too, since all area in Subnautica is what... 2x2km? 3x3km?

Some mechanics, yes, could be 'borrowed', but since we have no spacelegs it's all pure speculation.

It grabbed me once it was released and was playing that for a few days in a row. After it's finished though ... Didn't launch it any single time. What's the point? Building a new base?

By the way, I could completely understand people who want some kind of base building mechanics to Elite, that is so nicely done in Subnautica (which is a main point of amazing emotional connection to the world), however it probably won't be really possible, because of:

1) Scope
2) Online

Some thing could be borrowed, yes, for instance that log (codex) is probably is going to be similar to Subnautica's and other games as well.

Great game. Definitely up there as one of the best I've played in recent years. It's one that doesn't leave my hard drive. I have found it great to just boot up to while away an hour then end up playing for 2....3....4.

Still waiting to buy this specifically for the Oculus. So waiting to hear they've added Touch Controller support!

So in his opinion...

No Atlas... maybe.. possibly..

We can only wait :p

Well mainly I think his opinion is not based fallacy and wishful thinking, which is refreshing. Professional ED hypers, here, should learn from him. :p
Other means of transportation - possibly. Anything bigger than Cyclops? Not a chance.

But I do hope some rumors about the DLC itself will prove true. I would love to continue playing.

Unless we talking about really huge map expansion anything bigger tan current Cyclop would be a pain to drive - even Cyclop gets stuck from time to time. But this sub concept do look amazing to be honest.

It does, but like you said, it doesn't make sense for the current map size.
And making bigger map would be bad for other kinds of gameplay, imo. After all, it should be about personal exploration, cave diving and such things. Driving a big sub longer distances just for the sake of driving a big sub wouldn't be exactly engaging.

Picked this up the other day....

Most things this fun arn't usually legal :)

18 hours in, still little idea of what I'm doing or why but still having a blast :)

It's a fantastic game.

I've actually finished the story now, took me 82 hrs but man what a wonderful journey it was! I'm still playing though, having a blast building crazy bases in scenic spots. I'm even still discovering new things now and then which I'd missed before. The world is so incredible, one of the best exploration games I've ever played.

Can't wait for the upcoming Arctic expansion. It will be a day one purchase for me no questions asked.
