Summary of 2.1 "The Engineers" changes+additions from the dev updates and newsletters

Yeah, criminality will definitely get a big rework - I suspect system security response will be more adequate, and there will be additional penalties of killing other commanders (as it is frowned upon by Pilot Federation).

I wonder when the Beta will be released for this? Plus I hope that this time people will properly test all aspects as I think last time everybody just had fun on the fancy bits, which kinda ruined the testing purpose.

Well, what they have said they are hoping for beta at the beginning of May, and release beginning of June.

Criminality: faster reaction time and strength by local authority in higher sec systems, and viceversa, added penalties for players killing other players based on difference in rank/power, docking permissions denied, interstellar bounties, etc

Powerplay: increased efficiency of Powerplay actions in Open (not increase in merits or rank or benefits, just powerplay action progress)

Thank you Viajero. You just saved me some typing time ;)

Also recently mentioned without any specificity as to 2.1 release:

-exploration will be getting more risk :D :D :D
-we may need weapons/defensive capabilities in deep space
-solar flares/discharges/mass ejections that can damage shields (requires shields?)
-POI changes, much more rare in deep space
-engineer locations may be initially secret
-module crafting will be mostly net upgrades but may involve balancing factors (smaller downsides)
-increased rebuy cost when committing crimes (vs other players?) based on the cost of the ship in which the crime was committed, switching ships will not remove extra rebuy cost
-possible changes to PP traffic based on the security level of a system
-missiles will be revamped to become more useful

i guess this update dont apply to Xbox then?

They haven't said anything yet, but as far as content update goes - all Season 1 stuff will apply to XBO, there's no doubt about it. Question is when XBO will see this update. My money is on that due of massive changes it will be released same time as PC/Mac updates.

Also pure speculation, but in a style of Horizons season we will quite a list of planetary side optimizations and visual improvements.

Just for clarification, the stuff in my list was all from the mouths/posts of devs with the filter of my memory in effect, but "pure speculation"?? Imo, that's a bit pessimistic. But yeah, until these are in a beta/release patch notes, it's all speculative I guess.

I haven't heard anything about planetside optimizations and improvements. Unless you're referring to the ones made in beta?

Yeah, it was speculation from me :) Your list is factual one, that's why it's awesome :)

It would make sense they would roll some improvements in but yeah, way too early to tell.

Well it's as accurate as my memory is reliable, and as the intentions of the devs are translated into working game mechanics. I can't wait to see what makes it into 2.1, and I have faith that 2.1 will be a great patch for ED. Frontier has some extremely talented and dedicated people, and the extra time they needed may even hint at some very cool surprises (OK now that is some pure speculation on my part!).

Another one on that list is that the AFMU (and I searched the OP for AFMU this time NeilF) should have mass. Can't recall if that was just a passing comment or an actual 2.1 change tho.

Is that a confirmed change? It's going to screw over a lot of the DWE explorers if suddenly their ships gain mass while out on the other side of the galaxy....

Hmmm, my twin AFMU's suddenly gain X tons of mass. Jump range drops by X Light Years. Possibly stranded in a system where no amount of Jumponium can get you out. Forced to self destruct with months of discovery data on board.

Yes, I think this would be a bit of an issue!

I have to say I'm still most excited about the bookmarkers still of all the changes lol....

I am however also digging

1) the nav beacons actually working as actual nav beacons (would give people other than bounty hunters a reason to visit beacons to learn a bit about the system).
2) more large & huge hardpoint options. I love my plasma accelerator but a class 4 laser or multi-cannon will be so much more reliable and useful.
3) the engineers themselves also are of some interest for me (if at least out of curiosity)
4) a clock huzzah! (I hope we'll have the option to set whether its "our" time or galactic time instead of being stuck to 1 of the 2)
5) Thank the gods they're making navigating the options a bit easier as well. I assume (and hope) that means sections will be collapsible (please FD!).

only thing I'm not digging is the mission rank requirements being removed (mostly cause I'm aiming for triple Elite by late April / early May)
but for a new player I imagine this is pretty great I suppose.

also as someone who is "ok" at combat not sure how I feel about more combat changes. Already I find some AI to be easy but others I find them to be too stubborn/difficult. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Even if it would have been a change I think the support would have helped you in that regard. Or they would have added a safety mechanic by changing current modules into "legacy" modules which would still work but vanish as soon as you land on a station.

I hope there is a miner engineer.

"Yah. I can make you an asteroid scanner."

*presents immense list*

I then disappear in an enthusiasm powered high-wake, in search of the list items.

Why would that be an issue? Missions will be supposedly generated around your ranks and have higher rewards for higher ranks. Higher rank => higher rewards, lower rank, less chance of higher risk/reward missions. :p I don't see what preventing the lower ranks to take higher rank missions gives to higher ranks. It simply artificially slows down the progress of lower ranks for some arbitrary made up reason.

BTW if 2.1 has all these changes being the first update in Horizons, are we to expect the same amount of additions, tweaks, improvements in 2.2, 2.3, 2.4? or will they be smaller than 2.1 in means of update?

Asking this because all we heard since the begining was: "2.1 will be a massive update".

Well, will the other updates be massive as well?

Thanks

There was a post some time ago stating mines & missiles were going to get a slight buff.

Also I thought there was a mention of improvements to the System Map loading time, but that might have already gone into a minor release, not sure.

p.s. great work OP!
