Summer DLC Speculation 2023

Species appreciation #2 : The Arrau Turtle or Giant South American turtle (Podocnemis expansa) is native to the Amazon basin and would be our first turtle in the game. It could benefit from enriched cohabition with the Capybara, the Tapir and the Capuchin Monkey (even though they don't exactly share its habitat), the Giant Otter, Cuvier's Dwarf Caiman, and the Giant Anteater.
I would love tortoises/ turtles in general my biggest wants in order:

Green Sea turtle
African spurred tortoise
Pig nosed river turtle
Radiated tortoise

Dogs is the family showing up the most in DLCs. I don't care how big or small they are, they got nothing to cry about.

Plus a lot of mid-sized options still fall under  Canis like jackals and coyotes. That genus doesn't need more attention.
I mean, the context here is that large carnivora are in game, as in real life, extremely well represented in zoos because people like big carnivora and they are (often) relatively straight forward to look after in a zoo setting once you have the appropriately secure habitat down. But like along with elephants, giraffes and rhinos they are realistically always gonna be the star attractions.

And Planet Zoo is now running fairly low on larger species (excluding pinnipeds)

Sloth Bear
Spectacled Bear
American Black Bear
Brown Hyena
Sea Otter
Wolverine
Ethiopian Wolf
Jackals
Coyote

And honestly, I don't think we'll get all of those in the game, but the odds of at least 1 carnivora in any given full animal pack are gonna be extremely high.

I don’t think we still have enough large carnivores in the roster. For me the most needed are:
  • bears (I’d like to have them all)
  • jackals (especially black backed jackal)
  • wolverine
  • bat eared fox
I wouldn't call bat eared fox a large carnivore. Their not very back. Here's some more to add to that though.

Ocelot
Asian Golden Cat
Sloth bear
Honey badger
Walrus
Fur seal species
African civet

I definitley don't want all of these bus like 3 of them would be nice for the big carnivore of certain packs. Pretty much every pack has had a big carnivore aside from wetlands and twilight.

my updated wishlist there is lot to cover still, imo nearly half of these animals are a must

Nah man, the context here is that zoos are extremly well represented in monkeys, birds, domestics and reptiles but planet zoo is tge literal opposite.
It doesnt matter if we get any more carnivorans for the quality of the game with only few exceptions like martens or the walrus, which are specialised in things not yet found in the game.
Meanwhile another dog is just another dog in a game where allmost every single spot of the worldmap is coverd by atleast 1 canid.
We literally have more subspecies of the gray wolf then we got new world monkeys, domestics, waterfowl or land fowl, all extremly common and varried groups in zoos, far more so then canids.

"We will inevitably get more carnivora, and dogs have some of the remaining most viable candidates" isn't in any way an incompatible concept with "we need way way more birds and monkeys"

dogs have some of the remaining most viable candidates
But they don't.

In many languages, coyotes got 'wolf' in their name. That is not going to be popular, and a lot of Americans themselves seem to dislike getting ''backyard animals''.
Jackals (of any type) are barely relevant within the zoo world and don't look that unique compared to what we got already.
Besides the look of it, the raccoon dog covers a lot of the same niches as the red fox does, both even got funky colors in captivity because of fur farms.
Almost anything else with fox (bat-eared being the potential exception) or wolf in its name is going to be very similar to what we got already.

Bush Dogs I can see how might bring something different to the table. But still less than a lot of other carnivorans.

Honestly, I haven't seen any canids as essential since we got the Fennec Fox when the fox niche was filled. The only canids left I would still like to see in the game are Raccoon Dog, Bat-Eared Fox, and Bush Dog but I could live without them.

I dunno. There are still many canids that would add something different, in a way.

  • Bush dogs are semiaquatic, so that alone is unique. Plus, they don't look like anything in the game...
  • Raccoon dogs are iconic Japanese animals, although found all over Asia. They would be popular with casual players IF they use their Japanese name: tanuki. A lot of people would compare it to Tanooki Mario...
  • Black-backed jackals look sorta like canines in the Canis genus, but they also look slinky, so they would be unique in that sense...
  • Ethiopian wolves are very beautiful but fat chance of making it in...
  • Gray foxes are my favorite animal and look slightly different than the foxes we have. They look like a gray Arctic fox with some bronze markings, and the ability to climb would give them a unique in-game behavior...

The statement was that the remaining canines are among the most viable carnivorans left. These points are mostly what makes them stand out among canines, not what makes them stand out among other carnivores. Of course, every single species will have something unique going on for it. But that can be said about every single species in the animal kingdom.

I know mods are the kind of elephant in the room we don't (aren't meant to?! ) Acknowledge.

That said. I would be okay not getting another canid because I know some of the mod community will add them in. I will likely use those mods once the game support ends to keep enriching my play style.

However, considering that canids tend to be more interesting zoo animals, I would still be happy if frontier put some in and I think there is definitely the possibility that they will put them in. I like the tanuki, bat earred fox, jackal, coyote, and would be thrilled to see them. Also I really want to see the short earred dog, have you seen photos of one??? So long and sausage shaped, it doesn't look real to me because of it's proportions. It's a funky little oddball and I love it. Kind of like a fossa.
