IMPORTANT: Summer Update: How to use Billboards

thanks, I'm just being careful - don't want to end of getting a virus.
It seemed really tricky to find someplace that converted these files

Maybe you have to register to get longer videos converted. At the moment i don't see any problem with this site, except maybe getting advert mails.

Please report any crashes and bugs on the forums in the correct threads so the devs can look at fixes for you.

Bugs requires videos which i cant do because i cant report

Video screens seem to crash the game period i just switched between two video to try to figure out why videos are so dark at night (you need an external light to see them at night) and it crashed the game

I just tested the billboards! Used my own webm-videoclip I just made on the weekend - looks just absolutely fantastic and amazing! These billboards are absolutely amazing! Thank you soooo much for this update! It's just...now we can do so many new things!!! [happy][yesnod][wink] Thanks for creating the best game ever!

I love these billboards, but in the livestream last week the UI allowed for seperate image/video files to be used when they are in the 'off' state. Also, your official notes say that "All Billboards have an on and off state. You can select different images or videos for each state", and yet this is unfortionately not true (unless I am missing something). Don't get me wrong, the billboards are great, but I would love to see this featue return, and don't see why it was removed [happy]

Correct, this has been removed; as stated in that livestream we were showing a live build which is a work in progress and things were bound to still change.

You can turn them on and off, but off will default to showing nothing. You can't customise the off state as this broke how the screens were supposed to work with running costs.

Thanks for your feedback though, we can ask Andrew Chappell more in tomorrow's stream.

I had not enough time yet to play around with the billboards, but there are some Performance issues for some people here. This brings a (at least for me) important question: Could you give us some deeper advice on the Video and Picture Formats, especially for recommended resolutions (Pictures/videos) and bitrates for our custom clips? So if someone has massive performance issues with billboards, maybe they took in a Picture with a very high resolution or even a video with very high frame rates. I am just familiar with MP4/H264 codecs for now, so i dont know if someone maybe could try to do a *.webm video @ 4K 60FPS. If so, I totally understand that this can cause perfomance or stability problems. Some further information could be nice at this point. [big grin][heart]

Thanks for responding! Since the issue is with running costs, please consider enabling this feature in sandbox mode where money does not matter, it would allow for some really cool creations [happy]

Okay in English:

yes hello Bo i find it really much stupid that we again have to do everything in a webm format. and i know you could read my previous post because you are dutch. Oke fix it so we can also play mp4 files otherwise i go a little mad and poppy

Perhaps you may have overlooked the fact that there could be a very valid technical reason for the limitation?

Or perhaps you have an idea of how to integrate mp4 support. Please feel free to offer your help if you do [tongue]

I just looked into converting the mp4 videos into webm but I can't find anything to help me do it.
Would it work if I just added .webm at the end of the video file name?

EDIT: It looks like I need to convert my files.. can anyone help me?

I used any video Converter, which you can download free from CNET. Of course if you do not like that program, there are others.

If you have a video with audio

If you convert a copy of that to an audio file only

Put those on speakers

Tie the video to a screen, and then put the screen and speakers to the sequencer. Start at the same moment., is that the workaround to get the video to play with audio?

Get this to play in a makeshift theater for instance:

Hello,
Bo it's seems impossible to use image on vertical side right ? Even if you rotate the billboard.

Example :

The only way I have found to use vertical image is with the video screen

Yep. Chances are it's 'stupid' for a reason [wink] Hopefully like the audio files additional formats will be supported in time.

Im not a dev. but im pretty sure it is because of technical reasons.

Take the mp3 as an example. Dev's stated that using a lot of custom mp3's can be heavy on your computer because it has to be converted to another filetype on the fly in order to being able to use it in the game.
I can imagine it's the same for movie files. Maybe the game just can't handle .avi or .mp4 and therefore would have to do a conversion on the fly which is VERY intensive and would probably make the game unplayable.

so my guess is that the supported video format is "ready to be used" in game and doesn't use as much resources from your computer.

(Once again, just an idea, im not a dev :D )
