#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

The game would be pretty much unplayable without these services. Personally, EDDB and edmc are used on a daily basis, coriolis and inara, ed pathfinder, EDEngineer, there are so many 3rd party apps that I rely on totally for Elite. Without them, the game would be beyond frustrating and I would have stopped playing long ago.
Make their work a little easier Frontier. The community needs them.

I just saw the engineering material eating bug mentioned in another thread. Combined with a lack of Inara, Coriolis and EDDB, I shall be bowing out of both game and forum until the 1st.
This game is enough of a logistical challenge WITH these superb tools. Without them, it would be just a mess.

Just to let some people decreeing these tools unnecessary know; Yes, I did play without a single tool until EDSM allowed me to triangulate systems out on the rim at the end of 2015.
And, no, they were not particularly necessary when one owned only a couple of ships which never really upgraded.
But once the ships got bigger and more expensive, making reasonable money without turning to Robigo et. al. to upgrade CLASS 7+ modules required serious coordination. Efforts enabled by these excellent and most importantly, practical tools.

Also, I have donated to INARA, EDSM and EDDISCOVERY (which uses EDSM and EDDN). I have also offered to donate to Coriolis EDCD but was gracefully declined. These donations alone have come up to about the cost of another decent game.

Well, catch you all in May.

Let me know how Salomé fares.
Cheerio.

I SUPPORT THESE PROFESSIONAL GRADE TOOLS AND SERVICES TO THE HILT! AND I SINCERELY HOPE THIS EFFORT EKES A RESPONSE FROM FDEV.

Frontier please come to the table and talk to these guys.

I find these various sites invaluable to playing the game!! They are really well created and maintained for something that is not a paid job for them. They deserve to be listened to as ambassadors of your game to the 1000s of players using their sites to handle the volumes of stats and data that a single player could not hope to maintain themselves.

I think their suggestions are entirely feasible and reasonable and so I hope you will be swift in talking to them and seeing what can be done.

WE NEED OUR 3rd PARTY SITES BACK

+1 support to those 3rd parties.

ED would be gasping for players if those did not exist imo. EDDB and INARA especially have kept me engaged and informed where the actual game has fallen woefully short in terms of information access.

I don't often crawl out of my rock and onto this forum, but in this case I really don't have any choice. I stand 100% behind your decision and hope that FD will take it as seriously as you are. Especially when they see a spike in non-logins from most of the player base due to this.

Whilst I can get behind their cause I don't think this was the right way to handle things. Many of us rely on the tools they provide and by just taking them down with no advanced warning they are letting down their users.

Sadly I will have to think twice before using their tools again as they are proving themselves no longer reliable if they happily throw unannounced 'strikes'.

The VAST majority of players (both new and experienced) leverage these types of tools. Just because a small sub-set of super nerds choose to play the game with the barely functional levels of information provided in game exclusively does not mean that the third-party tools aren't necessary. That is what's called an "exception to the rule." The tools are absolutely necessary for an enjoyable experience for most players.

Let's hope so as otherwise this is a wasted effort.

I have used some of the tools in the past (not much but enough to recognise their worth) so I fully support the OP + team.

you guys have my support. I been using EDDI and EDDiscovery for the last few years. I hope I don't see them disappear.

Third party sites are an integral part of E:D experience. That's because E:D sucks at showing you the information you need. Trade routes? 3rd party. Engineers? 3rd party. Modules available at stations? 3rd party. Stations and factions available in system? 3rd party. Checking out what internal slots a ship has without getting into that ship? 3rd party.

Just got out of the hospital, since I'm stuck until I can walk thought I'd get caught up and finally do engineers. Thanks for screwing that all up to make a point they won't hear.
- Sorry to hear you've been in hospital and I hope you get well soon but....take your head out of your please! These 3rd party sites which you "need" do it off their own backs. Think before you repond with idiot's drivel like you just did. You should feel lucky that someone made these tools in the first place for you to use along side the other tens of thousands that also utilise it. You would do well to offer them support instead of complaining about losing somthing you require which you may lose for good if FD do not give the support required to keep the 3rd party tools alive.

I use almost all of these 3rd party sites daily, often on days I don't even play Elite: Dangerous. The developers of these sites have my full support.

I don't use 3rd party crowd-sourced tools as I consider most of them to go against the spirit of the game.

I'd rather have Frontier focus their efforts on adding the depth and complexity to the game that would justify the existence of 3rd party tools to begin with rather than give in to the wiki addicts who are more interested in farming than in discovery.

Though I only use Inara it is only for convenience. No one needs third party sites not even to trade anymore.

However I would like support for 3rd party development so I hope it works out for you.

I'm just going to say that the timing of this is obvious, and to be honest, very childish. It is, at best, wasting the time and effort of the playerbase in the event. FDev didnt have to do anything for 3rd party developers at all.

As one of the Admirals coordinating the defense, you've now made my life a living hell, and I will not support 3rd party developers from this point forward.

With me, all this has accomplished is a personal boycott of sites that I once considered useful.

Had you done so at a time where it was less vital to Drew Wagar and more respectful to the amount of time and effort that people who aren't getting paid at all (like myself and literally more than a thousand others) I would be more supportive.

No, this is totally not true. Your own message is the escalating one!!! The request is to support 3rd party tooling and ASKING FD to support them.
If you really think that this is blackmailing, then you ADMIT that 3rd part tooling is necessary to play this game. and thus you are proving them right.

Since they are 3rd party tooling and they feel neglected by FD, they have every RIGHT to shutdown THEIR OWN SITE and ask us for support. Your reaction only makes me support them harder; your reaction is therefore the escalating force...

As an explorer.

I spend countless hours flying around and scanning planets. it quickly grew boring so I just did a little bit of it and left for some other mechanic of the game. once I learned about EDSM.net, and the goal to organize people/data. I then got the urge to play Elite again. I felt like a real explorer and cataloger. I made it a job to visits systems and make sure that all data could be cataloged in a reasonable amount of time. I enjoyed seeing my progress zig zag around the map.

FDevs is pushing for people to make their own stories and experience.

without 3rd party tools, I wouldn't have:
information to even play the game.
a understanding what impact i made in the game.
a sandbox.
a purpose.
a community.
a story.

without 3rd party tools.
I can't get ready for the event this weekend. since I have no idea where to go to get the items i need to engineer my ship.
