#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Tbh i rarely use 3rd party tools anymore, i do it mostly when i need a not so used blueprint mostly. I have bookmarks for planet mats, outfitting in LYR space, trade routes, farming zones for multiple things, systems good for wars and other various POI's. Bookmarks fixed a lot of things. I also know my builds to perfection so i don't need Coriolis too often.

If FDev would make that the "Engineers" would show a full list of blueprints and some mats/data more info, we wouldn't need Inara that much either. We suggested this plenty of times and without any change.

Despite all this i understand your action and i partially support it, i imagine that a lot of people are lost without 3rd party tools/sites.

But i'm not sure about "Frontier will be able to see the value of supporting the third-party development community" by allowing "an external API" thing. Allowing 3rd parties to have access to account data or other sensitive things might not be a good ideea. If such an external API would be developed by FDev then yes, no problem with that.

I'd rather have the game missing info (that we find on Inara, Eddb etc) and even a ship builder like Coriolis added and implemented by FDev ingame, just like we have Holo-me for example. I personally had enough of alt-tabbing.

Also you need to take in consideration that FDev might want some things hidden (some modifiers, diminishing returns etc) and people to discover them.

We support your effort - I live locally to Frontier Dev do you want me to pop in their offices and 'Av a word?

We are supposed to be in the year 3303 (over 1200 years into the future) considering how far we have advanced in the last 300 years, the technological advances in many areas would be immeasurable. And yet, FD have presented us with a simulation that although we have a faster than light drive; we seems to have computers reminiscent of a ZX Spectrum. Surely we should be able to ascertain the best price to buy goods or ships or modules for these ships? Would not the purveyors of these items advertise this information – this goes for passengers to be carried. Our ships computers should be able to retain routes and historical information on where we have been – I mean tachographs, sats navs, mobile phones all do that today. And where is the ability to manage a group(player faction) within the game?

Many of these third party tools provide this information which, I believe is game enhancing. I am not part of the ‘lets do it the hard way brigade’ – this kind of information should be available in-game but that is probably beyond the scope of ED or its servers and FD should communicate their intentions regarding the companion API and open dialogue with the 3rd party programmers.

I’m also mystified by the statements that the timing will damage the event due on 29th – surely this proves that there is a demand for this information if its absence is going to cause so many problems.

Sorry, said i was bowing out of the thread, but can't resist...

If you want to bring realism into it, then by 3303, pilots won't even be needed. Trade ships could fly around doing their trades, running optimal routes for max profits, although presumably by then, profits woudl be slim because computer algorithms make sure the various economies are running efficiently. Combat pilots wouldn't be needed or even desirable! Computers will outperform them in every way. Everything will be done by computers and robots.

The only jobs left will possibly be the people who write the software, and who knows, by then, maybe the software will be writing itself. Humanity basically left with nothing left to do except sit in our assess getting fatter and fatter until we go extinct.

:D :D

Right, back out again.

So, as I said earlier, I'd be interested to know whether they considered just threatening this action, or giving FD a warning that they were going to do this in advance.

That said, I think a lot of folk are maybe missing one of the main points from the OP and taking the wishes a bit too far.

My takeaway from the rather long OP was not that they want more dev time to add new features to the API.

What they want is for FD to stop breaking the API every time there is an update to the client (or sever side) information, and to warn them if and when FD are going to make deliberate changes to the API.

This is slightly different, so notwithstanding the point that I'm concerned that they are taking the nuclear option rather than a middling escalation, saying that they are demanding more dev time is slightly overstating it.

Now FD's response may be, sorry, the API is a lower priority when we roll out updates and if some 3rd party tools don't work for a few weeks after each update, tough.

Or they may look at whether they can provide a better way to test the API when updates are rolled out.

What I would say, is that if an urgent point update (from 2.3 to 2.3.01 or 2.3.02) breaks something in the API, that is an unfortunate thing but it's just life - that they have to live with. Undetected bugs sometimes creep into production in any system.

However, being able to test the API during beta testing for major release would seem to be a useful thing, and actually until this OP I wasn't even aware that it can't be included.

All that said, I would still tend to suggest that this action is too extreme as a first action.

3rd Party Resources Fill Needs

I support the third-party developers, too. They fulfill needed functions that aren't addressed in-game and should be given as much consideration as possible.

Without 3rd party sites and tools I'd probably have stopped playing long ago.

INARA, without it our wing would probably not exist, but for sure not work as it does. Not to mention the engineering info, showing me what I need and what I have at a glance without having to actually visit the engineer.
CORIOLIS, invaluable for build theorycrafting.
EDDI, short time user, but an immense ingame enrichment.
EDDB, the one-stop lookup for where to find things.

I use those tools daily. But that by no means implies that the others not mentioned are less useful.

t's impossible for me to continue playing Elite without the third party who works to fill the holes left by FD who leaves us with a bug-filled update of lack of respect of player. Have continued to play largely through the strength of the community and the information it disseminates

Thank you for your work
