#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

You are assuming FD know when things are going to change.... :p

:D

In all seriousness though they should probably have a good idea about API changes ahead of time even if they can't communicate exactly what those changes will be or when they will happen.
Just knowing would probably be nice..
And once a change has gone through communicating what it is would be really handy - if that could be even shortly ahead of time that would be nice.

Incorrect analysis. It stopped the perceived complacency and being taking for granted dead in its tracks.

Regards.

To me you have missed a step by just shutting down without notice and that is why the well written OP is for me demanding rather than suggesting. If you had given notice this is what you intend and given time for FDEV to formulate a similar considered reply then I would have agreed with suggesting but you didn't and you are not.

WHAT!!????
No Inara??? noooooooooooooo.....this will basically slow right down my engineering vastly, got loads of PvP metas to build, arghhhh

use EDDB all the time, booooo FDev !

come on please support them, cant afford to have these sites down! (to name just 2)

christ even ED Shipyard is down, b*gger

I bought ED at release, played it for a while then put it down until Horizons was released. Why? because the learning curve was steep, the content....lacking, and being a casual gamer with a busy life I didn't have the time or inclination to deal with the mechanics of it.
In summary, it probably wasn't the game for me.

I came back to the Game when horizons was released and now use several of these sites on a daily basis (mainly EDDB and Inara). Sure you can use the in game tools to access the same data, but with nowhere near the depth or ease of use - In some cases, they even plug the glaring inadequacies in the game itself (looking at you Engineer blueprints).
Nowadays I'm a daily player, and to a certain extent these third party tools have made the some aspects of the game accessible to a casual player like myself.
Basically these tools are an invaluable resource to me and all honesty, I'm not sure I would have the time nor inclination to play without them. That would mean I wouldn't have bought the ship kits, paint jobs and name plates I have done.

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with the stance and certainly not the timing, in my opinion third party developers should definitely be supported better than they appear to have been so they have my support.

Absoloutely right on the latter part. They are welcome to make their sites paid for if they want, or shut down their sites, or lock them to just their friends only.

They do it all free of charge, without contracts they can do as they like (as long as it doesn't break and FD TOS).

But they are holding FD to ransom here. They are saying "Give us what we want, or else". Ok, technically speaking ransom usually means demands for money and that's not what is going on here. Extortion fits better, but that's a really nasty word and I don't want to use it to describe what the guys are doing, but it is technically correct.

No they're not because the site is needed so there's no ransom. It's a fan based site, the owners are saying "we're not going to keep it open if you won't listen to us. As we've tried all forms of communication, we're shutting it down this weekend and maybe your player base might have some words with you about it."

Liking them to terrorists is patently ridiculous - what a stupid thing to say!

I, along with my fellow devs, have put many hundreds of hours into tools supporting your game. All for free.

We are not expecting any payments, but the least we could expect back is some support, information when things are changing before they change, and maybe the occasional mention on the newsletters/video streams (I see plenty of coverage of people making videos etc, which of course are great, but are they really more important than all the tools people use ever day to play this game?)

Rob

Do you do this for gratification or for helping the community?

The SimRacing community has countless apps for countless games that do countless things.
- Do you ever see them advertised with the games?
- Do you see the devs whining when it the developer and OWNER of the IP changes something?

No, they do it for the community, not for gratification. In all my years of using third party tools, this is a first.

I don't know if the ones making the demands noticed the state the game is currently: - there are more important things to fix / implement than give some gratification to third party developers.

A strike is a demand though.

A strike without demands would be rather... strange.

"We're going on strike! And we demand nothing!"

Time for this....

And on that note, i'll bow out of the conversation. Its been a lot of fun, and i've farmed a load of rep! (cheers everyone).

Hope everyone continues to play nice ;)

These third-party Websites are greatly used and the people who made and run them have done a great job. i would love to see the support they need and think it would make these site so much better

Withouth the community, and the 3rd party tools, this game is only a piece of junk.
Devs should know this, this game has no single player story, and just doing missions or exploring tons of indentical systems, is something that isn't worth any money nor time.

I hope they will understand their only option.

To all the people complaining about the strike:

You are complaining that a tool has been taken away from you.

The apps on strike are doing so because the tools they use to provide the app have been taken from them.

The hypocrisy is hilarious.

To all the people who say use pen and paper like 1984:

You are posting on the internet using a browser. The maintenance of which requires the free and fair cooperation between thousands of people.

The hypocrisy is hilarious.

To all the people who say they don't use the the tools and denigrating those who do:

You did not get all of your game knowledge on your own. You still use reddit, these forums, the internet in general for advice. Many of those people you interact with use those tools. So you still benefit from them, even if indirectly.

The hypocrisy is hilarious.

Amazing.. this guy can obviously see over our shoulders and know exactly how we play and what we do.

FDev, please... support this guys. The game is better WITH them.

Just this: the game is better WITH and BECAUSE of them. [big grin]

I love using this site as an infrequent player i rely on it a lot. its useful in so many ways. Please support them as this adds a lot to my and im sure others enjoyment of the game.

I wish that our 3PDevs would have went a bit further and put out a list of things they would like from FDEV. Not necessary as demands but so that FDEV knows exactly what the community needs in order to keep playing/growing/supporting this game. They have started to take their customers for granted over the past year and a half, and it shows. It's about time for a wake up call, between their apathy toward the community and patch after patch of broken features, I am sure they're on thin ice with much of the community.

Fire in the hole!

While I did appreciate the tools you guys provided there are more pressing matters that require attention... #bringbackpolls

I'm a casual player and I use a few of these websites.

Frontier, please help these great people with their efforts to improve access to information about the game. I'm another loyal fan that would love to see some cooperation among all parties involved. Thank you!
