#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Frontier never asked third parties to make sites. You guys took it upon yourselves to do it. Going on strike is only going to annoy the player base and not FD.

On the plus side maybe people will learn how to use the in game tools for trading.

exactly ... FDev doesn't care if you have these sites or not. Only ones you are hurting is the player base. If you don't want to do it then don't.

On the other hand, all engineering information disappeared from the Companion API. This meant for example that players could no longer import their engineered ship builds into tools such as E:D Shipyard and Coriolis, which was a feature that had been often requested and took countless hours of work to develop. Two weeks after the patch it is still not clear if this change was a bug or an intentional removal of the feature.

Ohhhh, this is what happened. =/

'Sake Frontier.

I have mixed feelings about this whole topic. On the one hand I have to admit I use the tools I find them very helpful and in some cases indispensable. Having said that however, I also believe that third-party developers stop complaining and thank their lucky stars that they are being allowed to develop for a game they do not own in the first place. If Frontier wanted They could shut down All third-party development as an intrusion onto their IP. They do not owe third parties anything nor are they Beholden to Divulge any of their development schedules, processes, Or code for the benefit of third parties. In the case of third-Parties Developing during Software beta, that's just foolish. You should expect things to be broken. I imagine I'm not going to be popular for this post. But the truth is the truth. You pays your money's you takes your chances. Now on the flip side (I wonder how many people will flame me before they read this part) Frontier developments should also realize That third parties Do enhance the experience of the game and in doing so add value and help to maintain customer support and Customer retention and in that respect Should be considered for in-house support.

I wanted to add something, but after reading all that I just be silent - total misunderestanding of the guys who really are doing great job, big help for me engineering ships, so I give full support to them. Skip the rest.

Whilst I can empathise with the 3rd party developers here they may have shot themselves in the foot. If Frontier do see a strong reaction to this, and think that the information provided on 3rd party websites is important enough to spend developer time on, it may be more economical to add the result into the game rather than support a 3rd party API. It seems a shame as there is obviously a lot of passion, talent and good will, all given freely that Frontier can tap in to. I hope both sides can come to a mutual working agreement soon.

Someone else may have made this point but 68 pages now... :-/

Hahahahaha.

EDDiscovery, coded by a dozen of so experienced coders probably costing a firm a hundred pounds ish per hour to hire, with many thousand hours of work in it. Don't think Frontier can afford that.

Then multiply by all the rest of the tools..

I think your economics is off ;-)

I support. External tools like inara, edcd, eddb, etc. make this game better, Frontier.

I wash my hands with this filth.

The fact some of you are calling these 3rd part developers childish proves their point. They spend hundreds of hours of their time for free or "donation" to create public accessible tools. They can do whatever they please. All they are asking is a line of communication. That's it!! I kind of wished they didn't give any reason why. They should of just did it silently and watch the community scramble on what was going on and let you guys figure it out on your own. This really goes to show how inadequate the in game tools are. It's 3303 in game but yet I can't pin more than ONE blueprint per Engineer??? And the response from FD on the matter in a live stream is simply the typical response for everything "can't say, well look into it, nothing at the moment" We can't search in game for the price for ships and what's available nearby but IRL I can search by car, color, price, convertible. I have to wait and dock at some outfitting space port before I can see the detailed specs of my ship. That is only a few but they're so much more. Cmon!

3rd party developers....just take em offline for good. Watch it burn.

Like I said, I wash my hands of this toxic community and toxic game development. I am no longer supporting this game with my money.

No one asked them to. The sites were created for their own personal convenience first and the public second. The sites are luxury and are not needed. If the site makes any profit, then FDEV sees none of it.

So you can no longer support this game with your money and go away. This has nothing to do with toxic and everything to do with delaying development time in order to waste resources on a pet project. This game is taking long enough to develop and tools like the ones the site owners are providing are something that can be done later. Right now the FDEV team need to worry about making an actual game and not making some non employees happy using resources from their own pockets.

Heck all of the help provided by FDEV in the past has already cost no only them but you. The money you spent to purchase said game has paid the employees who are wasting their time with this endeavour. The third party developers took a part of entire communities monetary contribution to the game development and are now holding you hostage.

be nice if they did, then these parasites would go scrape some other games data for "donations"

You cant be serious, Parasites? :D

I cant speak for the other devs but my donations dont even cover the £40 a month hosting cost. I made my trade site in alpha to help players with a better trading ui while the in game UI game improved (it never did).
I've spent 1000's of hours working on the site and supporting the players and you think thats parasitic?
What have you done to help the community?

Even with a very generous percentage in favour, it doesn't look good.

TBF. I love the 3rd party tools, I think they are great. But stomping your feet like petulant children is just going to burn bridges. :(

Stop stomping your feet like a child! [yesnod]

These guys do their best to help create the community and some clueless people call them parasites. Well, I support their stance. Help them FD, you have the most to lose in all this.

In the case of third-Parties Developing during Software beta, that's just foolish. You should expect things to be broken. I imagine I'm not going to be popular for this post. But the truth is the truth. Frontier Developments Owes third parties nothing. Third-party developers Should stop Complaining and instead be thankful They are even be allowed to develop for platform That they have no rights to.

That is a weird position. Sure, they should be thankful and are that FDev starting giving them more to work with. There was a time when they got nothing, mind.

However, to start supporting something and then to fall of the radar w/o at least a cursory amount communication is really poor form. It is disrespectful to people who have helped the game to succeed.

The removal of these tools at any time would be inconvenient enough. Doing it with no notice, no prior demands and over a weekend where Frontier have an event planned is cynical, and is not endearing. While a lot of the community *will* be on-side with this action, it could have been done with more tact if the OP had been exactly the same, but instead of an immediate take-down, giving Frontier a week or so to respond. There is bound to be negativity to this action simply because of the way it was done.

We have been on at them for a while asking for some basic communication, so we are not surprised and have to scramble when something changes out of the blue. This is not a decision made lightly.

While I admire and respect some of the talented 3rd party devs that are part of he Elite community I simply can't get behind this 'strike' nonsense.

Frontier have been clear in the past on what their limits are regarding 3rd party tools and what will be available as a result. You guys and gals chose to make said tools knowing these restrictions, you guys and gals chose to maintain and update said tools despite the difficulties and you guys and gals knew full well how Frontier operate.

So, for you now to try and hijack Frontier, using the community in a very distasteful way, on this bank holiday/Salome event weekend is cheap and nasty as hell. I've actually lost a bit of respect for you guys, this just screams of you getting too big for your boots and extreme arrogance.

To those of you that think Elite is unplayable without these tools, you couldn't be more wrong and frankly I'm embarrassed on your behalf that you are so comfortable being used as pawns in an ego trip.

Thou Shalt Not Criticize the Dev-Gods or the "Disciples of Elite" will surely smite you! (So Sayeth the "Disciples of Elite")

Anyway....

I use virtually all of your tools and would like to THANK YOU for your effort in developing and making them for FREE. Surely this must be a labor of love. While all the "Disciples" are happily having their "Thank You Party" for the bag-o-bugs we PURCHASED which is 2.3, I think THANKS are more deservedly issued to the folks who don't take our money for debatable improvements in an otherwise great product.

I expect the reason that the DEVs don't want to try and keep you cut in on developments is that they themselves would have to have some sort of idea of what exactly they were going to deliver. It adds some level of accountability to the development process and it appears they will have none of that.

Anyway, I will certainly miss your tools while they are offline and, as an Open Source HW and SW developer myself, I feel your pain. I support your effort and I sincerely hope you get the traction you need. For the benefit of all ED users and the product itself. You guys do good work!

Thank You. Good Luck!

A thought just occurred to me, and this may be a result of the fibrous growth that connects my optic nerve to my colon and gives me a s___ty outlook, but hear me out here...

What IF this breakdown in communication is intentional, and the first step toward Frontier deciding to monetize the sort of data these various 3rd party sites have been providing freely, in form of a paid companion app for PC, Android and/or iPhone?

Given the sheer number of people who simply cannot seem to find a way to play without these, it certainly would make financial sense, as they'd HAVE to buy these apps to continue to do the things they've done all along.

Just speculating.
