Surely its time to drop base game customers

The problem isn't keeping the base-game updated.
The problem is ensuring that owners of the base-game don't accidentally get screwed over.

We've already had minor examples of this where, for example, there's been CGs that are supposed to be open to everybody but which require things that can only be found on planet surfaces and (unless I'm mistaken) non-Horizons players can still meet up with Thargoids but they don't have the same access to AX anf Guardian tech that Horizons players do.
And, of course, at it's most basic, a base-game player (with no access to engineers) can still get attacked by fully engineered opponents.

The simplest solution is to ensure that all expansions are "exclusive" (in the sense that they're all completely separate from each other) but that means each expansion is likely to be rather narrow in scope, which is a shame because it means FDev will never be able to create an iteration of the game that showcases all the expanded content.

For example, we already have Horizons.
Let's say FDev (by some miracle) manage to add atmo' landings and space-legs.
If they want to avoid forcing players to purchase all 3 expansions, they won't be able to create any space-legs content that takes place on planet surfaces and they won't be able to create any surface content that requires space-legs.

That means, you're never going to get the "full experience" of dropping out of orbit, flying to a city and getting out of your spaceship and walking around to complete some objective.

Course, with 3 or 4 years left before FDev can ED, they're probably just thinking in terms of 3 or 4 minor paid-expansions and that's your lot.

(In answer to the bolded part) Why? .. Now, If using my idea of bundling in 'Horizons" with the next (or even both assuming "Legs" and "Atmos") DLC, Lets say you only buy "Legs" - you get "Legs" content (space stations, outposts, ships and airless planets). So you can walk about, just not on Atmos planets.

If you Only buy Atmos you can land on said worlds as we do now for airless, you just can't walk about. So still have your SRV and can visit settlements (as we do now)

If you buy both then you can do everything.

and If ED is still making money in 3 to 4 years FDev wont stop supporting the game, that would be madness.

They could just stop selling the base game without Horiizons, and offer a free (or cheap) upgrade to existing base players, then stop upgrading the base game.
That would probably please the most.

However, what of 32bit players who for whatever reason can't upgrade? Do we abandon them?
What next? Abandon non-VR players?

It's silly to compare non-VR gamers to folks who don't run a 64 bit OS.

My guess is that the two clients are the same with some features disabled.....and stop calling me Shirley.

Possibly, but dropping 32 bit exe makes me think otherwise.

EDIT: Not retaining, but dropping

It is curious why Frontier keep it.
Maybe it’s better for marketing to make people feel they got a great bargain by adding it cheap rather than it just being integrated into the main game.

I remember the long threads debating the necessity of 32bit versions lol

I’ll try not to waste too much brain power on this one.

Realistically players not bought into horizons are freeloading.

Dropping them is too good for them. They need to be tarred and feathered, burned at the stake, and hung drawn and quartered, at the least.

These people are scum remember, they only bought the BASE GAME. I don't understand how it's even legal for them to be alive. Buying a game and then expecting to play it... The cheek of it!

Rep to the OP surprised this hasn't come up more often.

Where are the pitch forks!?!?

:S[???]:S

I have literally no idea what this thread is actually for, what it's supposed to accomplish, and what business it is of the OP who pays what to play what.

I'm pretty certain that development time and effort is not particularly affected by there being a 'base game' that some folks are very happy with.

We should be using our argumentative efforts on more important things, like why are there no proper Xmas string lights, or Xmas tree bobbleheads?

I expect the next paid release will bundle Horizons so they don't have to manage 3 versions.

Though it's not that hard to manage anyway if they make all versions upgrade to the latest version and just restrict certain enhanced features.
Some Horizons content may become accessible, but nothing useful.
