General / Off-Topic swearing debate

Pagan isn't a religion.

In the same way that being a Christian isn't a religion.

A Pagan (or a Christian) is someone who is believer in a particular religion.

For a Christian it is Catholic/Protestant/CofE/etc.,

For a Pagan it is (traditionally) anything that isn't Christian! In Victorian times a list of Pagan Religions would include religions such as Hindu and Muslim!

In more modern times, a Pagan is someone who believes the old religions (I don't count Wicca as an old religion as it is a recent invention).

I, like Gazzereth, wondered why there was another thread about swearing and then I read the OP...

OP, seriously, you are allowed to say many things in this forum so long as you treat people respectfully and do not post things about people that you would not wish to have posted about yourself.

There are many people who really would rather swearing was not used and in these forums it is often censored by the post filter. Those who do use swearing whether censored or not are generally expressing enthusiasm or a view rather than using the swearing as an insult.

I found your post later on this this thread to be equally odd, especially the following sentence.

I try not to think down to your level

That seems to be dismissing people as being lesser than yourself which goes against what I think you were trying to say in the first place...

If you want to engage meaningfully in these forums you need to show som humility and understanding as well as respect... None of these have been demonstrated by you in either of your larger posts in this thread...

To be honest I really don't think there's anything to discuss in your original post.

Is this about swearing on the forums or in-game (with the upcoming comms feature)?

I abide by the rules of these forums so no swearing.

In-game I might swear into a mic but wouldn't take the time to type it. It is usually a momentary emotive expression of frustration, anger, joy, surprise and a host of other situations.

I don't see myself having any intent to swear in-game but like a huge number of my species, I slip and say things. I can't see there being a real-time profanity filter for audio comms but they might have an in-built one for typed comms which exclude profanity.

I personally look forward to it driving people to become more creative in their insults :)

I find it interesting how the fiction works have dealt with it. I've finished a couple, and there's John Harper's idea of using "Fates" as an explicative, and referencing Robert the Bruce as a form of God in exclamations.

In Escape Velocity Chris uses "Space!" which seems to fit well, being a short, sharp word.

I've not yet read Drew's new book (busy on the anthology still) but in his past ones he used "frak" which I had assumed to be an in-joke relating to the BBC 'B' title of the same name involving a caveman and a yo-yo. Apparently not, it was used in a TV show too.

Or there's the Father Ted approach...

With around 250,000 words in the English language, there surely must be ways of expressing 'free speech' using words that would not intentionally offend others.
This forum is accessible by all, why not take it as an opportunity to promote good manners and etiquette when discussing posts, and show people that there are many ways to express opinions without resorting to profanities & coarse language.
The filter is fine for me.

Spacing Space Spacer... it could work, or go down the Firefly route and use Japanese insults

Use of the words "actual" and "actually" in lieu of a common profanity can be amusing.

Although this is an English language forum (except by specific exception in some threads), other language insults could cause problems due to the international nature of the community.

Yes, swearing in an language other than English wouldbe considered to be bypassing the swear filter.

I'll repeat my post in another thread that was discussing this.

I posted in the Beta forum on leading by example.

In real life I can be as foul mouthed as the best of them,(and frequently is so...) but here on the forum Frontier have a set of rules they deem how contributers to the forum should conduct themselves.

This is of course their right to do and even though the filters do catch out innocent words in the main it tends to do the job required of it.

It's something that when you register you agree to and a well constructed counter argument is met with more respect than letting fly with naughty potty mouthed words.

The Frontier forum is a family orientated place, it may come as a shock to some but Elite is not the only series of games FD have created. ;) Some games are for the younger gamers i.e Kinectimal, who may be intrigued into what Elite is and will browse the main Elite Dangerous forum. We really want to encourage them to join in and become the next generation of Elite players to kick our collective bottoms with their faster reflexes and all that.

Always be mindful of this and post in a responsible manner.

Here's another thought around the whole issue of swearing. Most of us spend at least some of our time here pleading a case to Frontier, and one of their top bods has made it clear that being rude will significantly weaken your case:

personally (and for me there's really no getting around this), unconstructive, abusive and rude posts just won't get anywhere.

As in: I won't bother reading them carefully, or take any real notice of their content. They could contain the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything; I still won't take any interest, because in my opinion there's no excuse for such bad behaviour in a public forum. Sorry.

Obviously you can swear without being rude, and you can be rude without swearing, but a language filter is a reasonably useful reminder for people getting into the habit of being constructive at all times.

There are some incredibly offensive words that can pass through the swear filter. Quite a massive oversight:-

EA Games
Ubisoft
British Telecom

And for that moment when you wish to express your anger at losing a cargohold full of gold as you're smashed into the side of a docking slot -

OSBORNE!
GEORGE FLIPPIN' OSBORNE!

I wouldn't bother with rationalising it, personally. I don't think "there might be children browsing!" is really an issue where the odd profanity is concerned in this day and age. Kids will be exposed to far worse in the playground. But it doesn't matter, because it's FD's forum and they get to set the rules. Which is all that really needs to be said about it. :)

I think it was Gordon Brown that sold our gold at a bargain price.

Thought I might as well get politics into a discussion about religion :)

All a bit of a no-brainer really.
Frontier run these forums at their cost and allow us to participate at their sufferance.
We are guests in their space - they decide the rules, and we agree to those rules (and we also agree to changes to the rules at Frontier's discretion) when we join.
If we don't like it, we can always leave.

Simple as that.

Can't resist....

Just to make sure he got the worst possible price, he informed the markets that he would be flogging all the gold well in advance.

Genius.
