Switched from Star Citizen to Elite (and reasons why)

I can't help but feel that there's something of a mental "lock" for many people when it comes to SC, sort of like..."I've backed it, I'm invested in it....I just can't admit that another game is a contender...or doing it better".
Funny, I've entertained much the same thought about the repeat detractors in the Star Citizen thread here.

The more I've looked at Elite, I realized there're going for a less is more appraoch, in the sense there isnt this endless feature list of bells and whistle, instead they are trying to address the core elements of what will be necessary to make this kind of game and do it really well.

For example the universe is not a series of boxes connected by cut scenes, or "seemless cinematic transitions" as the absurd marketing machine of Star Citizen would put it. Instead every star you see, rather than being an image stamped on the background, is actually a location you can visit. This also speaks to me of the greater emphasis ED has on the universe rather than just ships, ships, ships and then everything else cobbled on.

Anyway, welcome and I'm sure like me you wont regret the switch.

There's also a star citizen thread if you want to duke it out with the fanboys (within the rules of frontier moderation i hasten to add). Personally I find it quite therapeutic after a year of listening to the tripe and religious fervor on the Orwellian RSI forums.

That's exactly what's happening in their heads :)

As I mentioned above regarding communication, I do wonder if it's all a big distraction, the whole "wingmans hangar"....the next great starship...and so many other little features that don't really amount to anything except some time

This is something I disagree with.
I actually like separating ~half an hour to sit and watch WMH and it's not always been just time spent, they often reveal inside work that's not yet publicly visible except in WMH. For example, I really liked the episode in which they revealed huge mining machinery and mining station - have you seen that ?

I haven't. I've only watched one - just to see what it was like - but that's kind of my point. When I go onto the RSI website and click the "transmissions" button, I'm faced with what seems like an endless list of updates in some shape and form, and I've struggled to determine which ones to click to give me the information in a form I can handle. Ultimately I just don't try any longer, so I don't keep track of anything star citizen related. It's one reason I didn't back it, because I felt it was just too much work to find out what it is I'm backing - beyond the PR speak.

I'd add that I may have just been inept and looked the wrong way, or in the wrong place, but well....I doubt I'm the only one if that's the case :)

Off-topic suggestion: try downloading it and opening it in a media player that lets you increase the playback speed (e.g. Playback > Speed in VLC). Most online long-form content producers pace things way too slow for my tastes, and taking back speed control has let me enjoy things I'd otherwise find maddening.

I'm not saying that will change your opinion about Star Citizen - I hear what you say about the output being style-heavy and substance-light - but it might help get past a mechanical issue with the delivery process :)

I don't really mind the idea of transitions, it's not freedom of course and stating that it is is nonsense, but it doesn't automatically mean it's bad. Everything I know about SC is very ambitious in nature, it's a huge undertaking. I appreciate that making such a huge, complicated game will require corners being cut and restrictions being placed on what you can do.

If I'm honest, part of my reason for posting is simply that in browsing the web you find many articles, comments and suchlike essentially dismissing ED because SC is such and such. It's annoying because it's almost always dismissal without any actual critical analysis.

So often you read things stating something along the lines of "SC has millions and millions of dollars, ED only got a couple of million", it makes me wonder if it's a momentum thing...people handing over money because lots of other people handed over money? It definitely happens, that's for sure!

Basically my point revolves around marketing....SC has/had great marketing, they pushed so many peoples buttons...but my question is: is this a game that could be propped up not by great gameplay, but instead by the near-zealotry of many of it's fan base? That's my concern, and I truly hope that is not the case, but everything I've seen so far suggests that it is a distinct possibility.
