System Scanning

I've had a pesky moon hidden from my FSS until I moved.

If in doubt, fly to every gas giant with moons. Your FSS will scan any within 30~ls automatically.
It also gives you a different perspective on the system so you may find another body floating off somewhere you didn't think to look.

I'm constantly pleasantly surprised at the Elite community. Despite the OP's somewhat belligerent tone, people are still going out of their way to assist.

And yes, to the OP, the FSS -has- changed significantly with 3.3.

Prior to 3.3 a "honk" would populate the NavPanel and you could then fly up to all the bodies to "explore" them.

In 3.3, a "honk" -only- shows the body count.

Furthermore, there are 3 types of System now, as far as exploration is concerned:

1) "Pre-discovered" - these are systems, mainly in the Bubble, which are always fully mapped and fully explored. Mostly population >1million. All bodies show up in the NavPanel and System Map with full details.

2) "Discovered" - these are systems which -other- Commanders have partially or fully explored. All bodies which those Commanders have scanned with their FSS show up as "unexplored" in your NavPanel. Any bodies which have not yet been scanned do NOT show up in the NavPanel or System Map - you need to "honk" and then find them with the FSS before they show up. To get full details on "unexplored" bodies, you have to scan them yourself with the FSS.

3) "Undiscovered" - these are systems which you are the first to enter. After the "honk" you only get a Body Count, you have to then use your FSS to find all the bodies.

It sounds as if you're in a Type-2 system, in which one or more bodies have yet to be scanned for the first time. Congratulations - First Discovered tags on those bodies for you! As others have pointed out, enter the FSS and look on the frequency graph for any "squiggles".

IFF there are no squiggles on the frequency graph then there are 2 possibilities:

1. A bug; raise a detailed bug report to FDev

2. A new kind of discoverable which the FSS doesn't reveal. You'll be famous in Elite lore.

Ik that developers and coders are like weathermen they can't do a thing right but yet still get paid but being unable to count to 8 is the end of it all. Is It something in my game or did some jackass in his mom's basement hunched over a keyboard transpose a 1 and a 0

How To Make Friends and Influence People :D

I have an infinite scanner it will still say how many bodies are in the system and give you a list of the bodies in the Nav panel in said system
Part right, part wrong.
Body count the scanner does give right away.
List of all bodies it won't give, if someone hasn't scanned all the bodies already. Stars and close by (IIRC closer than 40Ls) bodies do autoresolve, they're then explored for you too.

In an unexplored system you populate the Nav Panel (+ SysMap/Orrery) yourself by using the FSS.

Before we hammer OP too much, I have also noticed this potential bug once in the past - the FSS will not resolve one or more objects in a system. As in the DS honk will tell you there are as example 8 bodies in a given system, but the last one will not let itself be found: The wiggle will stay up on the FSS spectrograph and the count will stick at 7/8 (or 23/24 or whatever). No amount of flying away along the system normal and scanning at a distance will give you a blue blob and white arrows to locate it with. Parallax hunting outside the FSS might, though.

I only noticed it once, and only during the beta where we also had the issue of perpetual zooming in the FSS view that would never resolve the body supposedly there.

When I had that issue I didn't report as I ran out of time trying to constrain it enough for a coherent report. And I never saw it again. But it looks like it is still here, if a rare thing and only for certain instances since others were able to find the 8th pas--- body?

:D S
