Taking a break until EDO is fixed.

tl;dr - Taking some time out from ED until it's fixed (hopefully). Will be back in six months (maybe). No stuffz to haz (probably). Going to play No Mans Sky (definitely).

Folks. I've been following the progress of EDO since the "new era" days of yore, via the death and resurrection of GalNet, through the teasers and trailers, through the Alpha and onto the launch. It's been a ride of a few highs, many lows and then what currently seems to be a slow and painful climb out of the abyss.

Prior to the Odyssey launched I'd picked up a free copy of EDH from the Epic giveaway with a view to using it to explore the 'new player experience'. I thought that was pretty good actually and it then morphed into a role playing in-game story line called "Elite: Retribution" (watch here if interested). That was mostly done to have "something to do" whilst we waited for EDO. I fully expected to start planning 'season 2' with my in-game collaborators shortly after the launch of EDO.

Well, we all know what happened. ;)

In-game events, expeditions and so on rely on a stable game and a playerbase that isn't fractured by technical divisions and versions of software. I tried to embrace combat, trade, exploration, PVP and PVE in our in-game shenanigans. The biggest hiccup with EDH was instancing, but we learnt to work around that. Yes there were some bugs, but we knew about most of them and we could cater for the foibles.

EDO simply isn't stable enough for this sort of play yet. Many of the community haven't bought it yet (and who can blame them?). Console players are locked out for the foreseeable future and those that do have the game have performance, stability and many other issues. We're at Patch 5 now and, whilst it's getting noticeably better, it's just not there right now. I completely get why DW3 is on indefinite hold (and I was looking forward to contributing some narrative to that too). I really hoped the game would be good enough by now, but it simply isn't and I'm out of patience.

So, I'm taking a break from the game hoping it will be fixed over the next half year or so. I fully intend to come back, but only when we have a version that is sufficiently polished and stable to act as a base for player led storytelling and in-game events. Once there's firm date for the console release I'll start doing some planning, but until then I'm hanging up the Remlok and packing the HOTAS away, though there will be a few more lore videos coming.

I made arrangements for my Stuffz to be vacuum sealed at my home station of "Mad J Wagars" in the Eulexia system and would just like to let @Bottom Hat know that he has first dibs on them in the event I don't return for whatever reason.

A pleasure as always and, of course... Right on, Commanders. o7.

Cheers,

Drew.

Understandable. I too am not playing until all the issues are fixed. Tbh I was only ever hanging on to Elite in the hope DW3 would happen one day. Taking part in the first two were my favorite times in this game. I was excited when I heard the organizers had asked you to write a narrative for DW3. Maybe well see it one day, but there's no point even attempting anything like that now.

We seem to live in eternal hope where Elite Dangerous is concerned so I may give no mans sky a try instead, hello games actually deliver. Although I wish it wasn't so cartoony! :)

I will honestly say that after yesterday's update I feel tired of playing Beta. Up until that point my experience FPS wise was acceptable, but since yesterday I get various "hiccups" while flying in space, drastic FPS drops in settlements and on planet surfaces. And nothing ruins pleasure of playing more than that.
Ad I'm not even sure if I can expect Fdev to fix it soon.

I was rather mellow about this whole Odyssey thing up to that point, but today I'm really angry. I have NMS, but I just don't enjoy it. I tried X4, but just couldn't get into it (flying model is irritating for me).
I want to play Elite. But Fdev just broke it for me.

Today I just want to spit in Braben's coffee. Seriously.

TLDR: I love this (Bad Word)ing game and it's killing me to see what's happening to it.

Hope to see you back in the black soon mate. My experience with EDO has been different than many, my machine is a relatively basic Dell running a AMD Radeon R7 360 and while I never had over 60 FPS the game has been playable for me from the start ( once the LOD issue was sorted). Of course it was very buggy and obviously not even close to being ready for release, of course it shouldn't have happened but it did and now we are all faced with a decision. I understand people's frustration but the who and why are now moot and the question is are we going to pack it in, completely, temporarily or stick with it.

I've been part of the Elite universe for almost 40 years, I love the game with a passion that does sometimes border on obsession. I lived through the dark times in the '90's when there seemed to be little hope of a new version of the game. Am I a blinkered fanboy? No although I've been called as much a lot recently. I respect anyone's decision to leave but worry the the exodus of players and content creators on top of all the largely negative media is irreparably damaging the future of a game that has seen huge amount of work done to it in a short time. I understand the anger but that anger is in danger of killing the game. I wish David Braben had come out with his hands up at the start, admitted the up openly and owned it, rather than leaving the CM team and FDev to talk all the flack but that's also now moot, so farewell for now mate, I will be here till the end, bitter or not.

I'm not normally someone who agrees with the big announcement of a departure from the game, but really I think people doing it after seeing how Odyssey has been handled is a fair point at the moment

Even for a console player who hasn't had chance to play it, seeing that once again we have significant playability issues is sucking more and more energy out of the game and it's a shame.

Personally I don't think this has really damaged the game as there would have to be some kind of reputation to damage when it comes to polished releases and let's face it, you know what you're getting with an Elite Dangerous update. What it has done is shifted it from my radar, so I can't particularly get excited by it. Predicted release dates mean nothing as they will either be pushed back because the game isn't ready, or it'll be released in an unready state and I'll still need to wait a few months before patches sort out the worst of it.

I'll still play the Horizons version because I do enjoy the game. It's just going to get pushed out more and more though as it's been 3 and a half years and Odyssey was supposed to add something different. It's a strange position. On the one hand, I want to be involved in the new stuff and feel like I only have half the game right now. On the other- keep that broken stuff away in case it spoils my enjoyment of what I have at the moment.

Hopefully, there will be drinks at the bar when you're back.
And hopefully served by Jacques.

All the best Drew!

I have started Odyssey on PC, because I just don’t believe the console experience will be good enough, we have so many problems on console as it stands, so I’m increasingly stepping away from ELITE on PS4 to get the experience I’ve always wanted (and eventually a PS5, but goodness knows if ELITE Odyssey will work on that, it’s worse than on PS4 currently).

When I tire of the ELITE grind, I pick up another title to play, but I always come back in the end, it’s certainly in my top games and I think it always will be.

I'll miss your ED streams Drew, I never managed to catch them live but they've been a delightful background of chat and visuals during many a workday. I will check out more of your non-ED videos while I await your return to the ED galaxy. Cheers!

07 Drew.

When Odyssey was first announced I was like...... 😲😀🤤🥳👍🏻👏

Then I heard that console players would get it last, and...... 🤔🙄😥

Then I saw that pc users had to deal with 1000's of bugs........ 🤨😦

Then seeing all the videos and images of Odyssey made me wonder what was actually new about it. I mean, it's still missions, but on foot...... 🤔🥱

Everything that is new about Odyssey (plants, etc...) has already been discovered, unless Frontier are going to add new content when console release happens, but they haven't said anything...... 🥱😴

So now I'm wondering what is the point in buying Odyssey for console....... 🤷‍♂️
