Tales From the Rim: Rimworld Adventures

When the Darkness comes, turn on the Light. Darkvision cannot save you, only help. The colony has made use of shambolic traps, of corpse you WILL need the resource for that but it is an anomally good way to deal with enemies. What a nice event - I thought the end was upon us.

At least we captured one of them… whose name I eludes me. I think it’s KewKewl, IIRC.
I wasn't even close. It's DemDemz... and it's Black that's the good shooter. DemDemz is a careful shooter, with no passion for shooting, and barely knows which end to point at the enemy. He's got pretty good melee skills, though. I'll keep him if he doesn't cause too many social problems with the rest of the colony.

Last night’s play session was annoyingly short. The good news is that Black was quickly assimilated into the colony, and DemDemz and Lady quickly hooked up. The better news is that even partially built, the kill box managed to blunt another pirate attack, to the point where the only serious injury was to Marjot’s pet monkey.

Which sadly died of its wounds. That little primate always got mauled whenever she got attacked. At this point, it was so badly crippled I was feeling sorry for it. Thank you, brave monkey. You protected your mistress to the last.

The worse news is that Black was seriously mauled by an ostrich while out hunting rabbits. Between them and the emus, these modern day descendants of dinosaurs are responsible for more severe injuries than the pirates and hostile tribesman combined. I think think it’s time to declare war on these flightless birds.

The Great Ostrich/Emu war is over, and they were no match for our concentrated firepower. One on one, those benighted birds may have had the upper hand, but six armed humans vs one bird? That overgrown chicken is toast.

And I think that’s where I’m going to end the story of the Southeast Covenant: “They all lived happily ever after.” I’m going to be returning to the Covenant 200 years later, who sadly did not live happily ever after. A mysterious calamity destroyed had the settlement, and the survivors have regressed technologically to the stone-age. I’ve never played a tribal start, so I'm going to add that into the mix, as well as Royalty and Ideology.

Tribal is the psychic powerhouse. You need tribal child background to fully commit - it's all about the anima tree.

"Tessa! Tessa! What you got there?!"
"Something beautiful. Here, let me show you!"
"Oooh, it's soft and warm to the touch. Can I play with it?"
"It's bedtime now, honey, but we can play tomorrow again."
"Just one more minute, Tessa? Please!"
Alright, one more minute and off you go to bed then."

Tessa watched the child play with the little cute cube in satisfaction. When all had finally gone to bed and she was alone with her thoughts - that was the right moment to start the cube statuette. This time it would be perfect. Or next time. Or never. Weren't they all not mere worthless worms? What a miracle they were graced by on object of absolute perfection.

The Keeper of History looked out across the fire at the assembled tribes people, who finally had time to relax after the Calamity that had befallen their Tribe.

"Here my words, Chosen of the Covenant. Remember from whence we came. Our ancestors came to this world, and built a City. But they were decadent and proud, and the Gods of this world struck them down. The Chosen Ones abandoned their wicked ways, and settled afresh in a new land. But our leaders became wicked and cruel, and the Gods struck them down in turn, sparing only us, the Chosen of the Covenenant.

"Who are we?"

"The Chosen of the Covenant," the Tribe replied.

"What are we?"

"We are One."

"Never forget. The Gods have led us to this fertile land, and the Chosen have already done good work. Nobilnatas has built us a fine Hall in the ruins beside these fertile fields, and Green has sowed those fields with food to eat, fibers to weave into clothing, and herbs to soothe our ills. Bela has turned the first prey Purple has slain with the bows Bela has made into sustance for the Chosen, and Dan has aided them all. This is the way of things."

"This is the way of things."

"Who are we?"

"We are the Chosen of the Covenant."

"What are we?"

"We are One. We are One. We are One."

Also tribals use drums for their dance rituals which is superior, imo. I've had my longest playthroughs with tribals. Did you take baseliners?

I'm taking things slow, getting myself reacquainted with the game in general, and the expansions in particular. I'll be adding Biotech to my next game, once I've gotten comfortable again with Royalty and Ideology. I've already got an idea for the successors of the Chosen of the Covenant:

The Apostates of the Covenant.

The cube event is getting quite uncomfortable. The study won't advance - 1 quadrum since the last breakthrough and we're still trying to decipher its secrets. Already 18 pieces of artwork are piling up. It's the last advanced event and I avoided it until now. I have enacted light quarantine for those affected. I hear it might be tied to wealth which is why it's probably taking so long. Not my favourite, do it early is my advice. It isn't too obnoxious but if it keeps going on ...
Hilarious if a little cube puts this colony out of commission now that the Marauder cannon has been made operational, the ultimate raid eradicator and pulveriser of anything that looks funny at it.
It's eerily quiet, too, almost 2 quadrums of no traders. Only 1 Scyther raid was mostly dispatched by Punisher artillery and the trickling in indiviuals were taken care by the colonists. There was a psychic ship drop from a quest which netted a masterwork charge rifle and we could put the new relic rifle in its proper receptacle instead. Amy had inspiration and I commissioned a chain shotgun which turned out a true legendary piece of work. Lotte has been assigned to use it, she still has to learn.
I am thinking of making a room from where my Eternals (militia) can issue forth, but I don't like them in my base and in the field I need free fire lanes for Punisher and Marauder artillery - so I just build a roof over the "barracks" in front of my walls.

If my colony fails I might need a fallback plan, but I really want to play through Anomaly chain once.
Fallback idea:
  • 3 crones, tribal witches, should start with a couple ranks and powers (might need editing). They emerge from the swamp and scheme in the area. Might need heavy editing - they would give their XP to "daughter" bloodkiss-like and die (like Dune's Reverent Mother) so you can't snowball the power crones, but the game system does not natively support that.
  • Individualist ranchers. OK Corral, single action, riding (Need to check Giddyup mod for that), lazy livestock multiplication, beer, meat BBQs and shooting innocent trespassers. Mid-late would be Alamo and stampede unleashed on enemies. Can we engineer animal genes? I really would like Combat Extended mod updated for this one - it has operable gun emplacements. It's not a good Alamo if it doesn't feature a .50 on a tower. And seeing how good the incinerator is - I'd use incendiary ammo a lot.

Thank the heavens. The cube event has been finally finished. 23 pieces of cubistic ad hoc art were created - I kept the masterwork. Some had some art descriptor like "this art invites the viewer to play with the cube" indicating it might act as sort of "infection vector but I believe it's flavour text. The more serious issue is imo peeps talking about the cube. Tessa got her hubby interested probably in the bed talk. Once I pulled Zinaida and visito Jumper from the barracks no one else was affected. And the cube was in the deathrest chamber, off the main traffic. I've avoided spoilering most of the events but the cube is probably the most memed one.
Now we can activate the last stage of the monolith.

What a ride - Anomaly has been concluded. We had a multistage end battle with elements from previous events. Perfectly doable with vanilla. The tools you acquire during anomaly study are your best weapons. In the end Punisher and Marauder didn't fire that much, Tesla coils were helpful in pointing out enemies and setting them on fire and at one time I had set half the map on fire with very satisfying effect.

(forgot to hit post yesterday…)

My tribals are no longer on the brink of starving. Between Purple’s and Green’s efforts, they have pemmican for days. Complex furniture has been researched, which allowed them to tidy up their barracks a bit. They’re now researching complex clothing, so that the leadership roles can finally be assigned.

Despite their misgivings about the potential for Disunity, Dan was persuaded to accept a title from the Empire on behalf of the Chosen. Their sacrifice to the Gods went well, and attracted Chosen Dweeb. His research skills doesn’t exceed Nobilnata’s, yet, but since he is dedicated to the task, research will go faster, and he’ll soon catch up.

The first of the greedy Unchosen attacked, and was promptly shot down. Had he survived his wounds, they would’ve healed him, and allowed to return to his people, as an act of Mercy. His body was instead taken into the woods, to nourish the world instead.

There is some Disunity among the Chosen on whether they should convert the Unchosen to the Covenent. Some believe that the potential for Disunity is too great. Others believe that the greater Mercy is to enlighten such lost souls of the benefits of the Covenant. After all, why would the Gods bestow upon Dan the gift of persuasion that they did?

Time will tell which path they will take.

I think Bay 20 is concluded. Or not? The search for Mother is not finished - the Void turned out as a dead end. We could go the ship route - it's basically the logical choice now the crew would follow. I built the ship once but I didn't do the migration one. We have a fair bit of muffalos. It would be not so hard entering the colder biome with that setup. Relic charge rifle, legendary chain shotgun, masterwork charge rifle and a collection of excellent weapons. I wait for the kids to grow up and maybe go for it

My tribals had a major instance of Disunity last night. Bela got tired of being repeatedly rejected by Nobilnatas, who is in a relationship with Green, and attacked her. Which was a mistake on Bela's part, since she was fairly adept at melee as well as ranged combat. Since Bela is my cook, this led to the tribe having to dip into our pemmican supplies until he recovered from the beating she gave him.

Complex clothing was finally researched, which allowed Dan to officially become the Keeper of the Covenant, and Green becoming the Chosen's Chief. A Lantern Ceremony raised the morale of the Chosen in general. There was also a pirate raid, which was quickly repulsed with only one minor injury. The Chosen, besides their two male huskies, also started with a female donkey. A male donkey wandered into the area, and was tamed. The first of the foals will soon be born.

The Passive Coolers turned out to be more than sufficient to stave off the effects of a heatwave this summer. The tribe now has a proper kitchen, and so far has managed to use up the meat we've gotten from hunting with very little spoilage. It's now been 22 days since the Tribe has settled, and their total wealth has increase nearly 50%. They've got quite a bit of cast-off weapons, both starting weapons and those siezed from raids, and some cast-off tribal wear from Dan and Green, so perhaps it's time for Green to travel to a nearby settlement and do some trading. The few caravans we've hosted haven't been interested in our "castoffs."

The Chosen decided to play host to an Unchosen, Ash, in an effort to spread the Covenant outside their little village. This angered the Gods, who destroyed everything the Chosen had built. And while the Fires of Purification raged out of control, the Gods sent raiders to the village, to pillage whatever hadn't been torched by the gods' wrath.

Will the Chosen recover from this calamity? Had Dan broken the Unity? How do they appease the Gods?

Only time will tell...

When I look at that fiery calamity I remember two of the log entries in my current game that made me laugh: Hyde was foamed. Hyde was viciously extinguished. I've never really used the foam packs much but they became standard equipment. I also tried the new foam turret (it's not so great).
