Talking about sound effects.

To each their own

It doesn't surprise me that some don't like the sound, some people don't like Ice Cream or Chocolate or all sorts of things, it's a consumable that is part of the environ and each of us gets to be who we are and like what we like.

That being said, I think technically the sounds are done well - but respect that your ear is not pleased by them.

Perhaps make some excellent playlists of favorite music and enjoy that as you explore and make yourself at home in E:D?

Respectfully,
Acier-

You think of Thargoids, of course ?

First, I have to say I really do not like them. Especially the noise while accelerating and deccelerating the ship. It sounds too much like something from the 8bit era of gaming or how an UFO in a 50s movie might sound.

The visuals are in fact stunning but I sincerely hope the current sound effects are only placeholders, or at least modable.

Well, turbine sounds are probably also not realistic, but it least it would be less annoying then the electronic version of a two cycle car engine we have right now.

I am very surprised.
I truly cannot imagine anyone not liking the sound effects in Elite Dangerous. They are the best I have heard in a long time.
You truly are the odd one out then. It happens.

Are you still alive?

You are entitled to your opinion...
I feel like the sounds are just fantastic! Cant think of better sounds for the game honestly.

odd

Sound effects are so good (in my opinion anyway) that quite often i got twitch with ED turned on and just listening to streams how someone else is flying through the universe. Im PB so cannot play myself yet, but just listening to those sounds is making me feel relaxed. Bizarre i know but hey what can i do
And they are quite beneficial in real life as well, lasagne i made last night whilst listening someone flying around bootes
were the best ones i made in a long time... :-D

The unique sound signature may not be for everyone, but to state that the de/acceleration sounds like it comes from the 8-bit era of gaming? If I was the sound engineer who worked who knows how long to come up with this unique sound (you haven't given any VALID examples as to what the acceleration sounds like, not to mention the particular ship in question) I would be pretty disappointed (in you as the unobservant consumer). Possibly you need to upgrade your sound system (or maybe your ears? ;)). Seriously, try it out with your best headphones and really LISTEN to the sounds. Then come back here and state what it sounds like. If you can post links to what you think the engine currently sounds like then maybe you will get more sympathy. As it stands, you are pretty much on your own as it is just too far of a divide for anyone to cross.

Also you haven't stated what you think the sound effects should sound like. Star Wars, Star Trek, BattleStar Galactica, etc.? How can the community and the Devs who may be reading this take your topic seriously into consideration if you don't provide more info. Honestly, if I hadn't seen your prior legitimate topic posts before I would've called you out for trolling...

I personally think the sound effects, in particular around the different ship engines are excellent. I am interested to see how much variance FD can put in between the 25 initial ships. It seems they have put a lot of effort into the minute details of how the ships are operating and represented that through sound.

There is always space to improve, but I am very pleased with the job so far.

Horses for courses, but I'm sure that by now you get the idea that you're in a club with a membership of one :)

Personally I've adored the sound and music since I first heard the opening notes of the game's splash screen.

What really stokes me is that not only are the sounds themselves interesting and communicative, but there is an incredible depth and richly layered feel to them, and they are recorded really well. They sound great through the desktop 2.1 system and through my Audio Technica headphones, but last week I ran the game through the living room 2 channel audio system just for kicks. The sound of a ship flying through a station atmosphere barrier played over the Naim Ovator S400s fair to made my bowels drop out! The guy who is doing the audio is a wizard :D

Bit of an audiophile here so listening to these sounds on some VERY expensive audio equipment. I for one am very pleased with the sound. In many games I usually have to opt for my lesser audio sound system cause I pick up on all the flaws in the music, fx, etc etc. Not SO with E.D.

Color me impressed.

Yes, I am alive. At least I was not really flamed for my personal preference.

I still think the sound effect could be improved, they too much remind of a really old and low powered engine, but I guess everyone has their own opinions.

It reminds me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82L2BedOY_s

(ED sounds just reminds me of this, but it is certainly not nearly as awful)

But about sounds I love. I liked the Homeworld intro with the long sequence of powering up the engines while listening to Adagio to Spring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCPSGhMW6Vg

New advertising slogan for ED - "Sounds so good you'll cook better lasagne" :D

I must say that the sound in ED is one of the things that really impressed me, from things like the awesome boost sound to the the background sounds in the station.

Adding my voice - sound design in the game has blown me away, its so vibrant, and alive. I love the pseudo-musical/tonal nature of the engine sounds as well (having only heard the sidewinder in person so far) - they sound futuristic, metallic, engine-y in an undefinable sense, yet grounded in an Earthy (so to speak!) industrial vibe that gives useful aural pointers to their state.

Think your description of it being "8-bit" is a bit misplaced! and I *like* 8-bit sounds! :D

Really? Seriously?

You don't like them?

On the whole, I think the sound is fantastic, I started a thread in praise of the hyperspace jump sound effects and their spooky brilliance, but......

I can understand that the engine sounds may not 'propel everybody's ship'. One of my favourite sounds was in the original Empire Strikes Back (less so on the blu-ray) right after the battle for Hoth, Luke turns round to see the Millennium Falcon blasting off from the base and accelerating away to make its escape. The sound of that engine is to die for, its gutsy, defiant, powerful and brave.....

That's not true of the engine sound in Elite, but you obviously can't have "gutsy, defiant, powerful and brave all the flipping time. :)

Maybe for the boost?

And obviously, there's so much sound in Elite that the engine sound has to fit in the mix without seriously impinging frequency space required for other sounds.

On the whole I'm thrilled to bits with the sound, but I understand some of us would like a bit more beef in the voice of our ships.

I do hope seriously battered ships creak and rattle though! :)

Hope you're joking, otherwise you've never been bothered by a dashboard rattle that you can't find!

But in elite anything that rattles is pretty epic. I love the sound when you're yanked out of tubespace, the whole ship aching and creaking. Really cool.
Needs some damage effects :)
