Test Server Access?

There is no test server.

You won't get access into any of the beta tests unless FD change their policy.
Why?
Because FD decided that only those who paid for Alpha and Beta development phases before release will have access to any future beta builds. It's usually only for a week to allow testing to occur.
If you chose to not be part of the Alpha or Beta phases, or you had no opportunity, or you missed the opportunity, then I'm afraid you're out of luck.

That kind of policy works and is justified PRE-launch, not in the Post-launch/Live world.

and as an aside, Do you really think a WEEK is enough time to properly test a patch??

It's justified in any way they choose. They' don't need your approval for their policy decisions.
And it's working now. Post launch.

No I don't. Not properly. But define properly.
It allows the devs to get a damn good handle on the issues and get the bulk of the work out the way pronto.
There have already been two updates and a list of fixes that's considerably longer than my arm. You will benefit from all of our input and the dev's hard work when the next update is released.

A week is if everything goes to plan, we are testing and it's all going to plan, a little too well actually.. Bottom line, this test server you are dreaming about is not going to happen mate, at least not anytime soon.

Good point. It might be longer.
I doubt it in this case as I've not seen any showstoppers yet. That said, I've not tested everything. Far from it in fact.

Why haven't you tested everything or even most?

I guess because we don't have an expert tester like you to inspire us ;) Look mate, theirs a lot to test, in different combinations. The main stuff is working well, but i'm sure we will pick up any issues before release. The beta forum is active, many people bouncing ideas back and forth.

Define working. We had a showstopper bug reach live, and then it took them almost 4 patches to fix it. and these were hot fixes and patches done on the production server, while they did fix things, and didn't seem to create any issues. That is more luck then anything.

Because it could have very easily went the other way and made things worse, now thank god it didn't but I hope you can see how it could have easily went that way.

I will applause FD for this, they do seem johnny on the spot with the patches, and I love them for that. But with a proper test environment, it could of been avoided entirely, and certainly they wouldn't of had to process all those refunds for people, which you KNOW took some dev time to process. Dev time taken from something else. Sure maybe not alot but some.

No it's because to test the end game stuff, requires that your either a Alpha and Beta backer, good luck or have huge sums of cash to test on live.

Keep in mind, just because your a Alpha or Beta backer doesn't mean you Test, or Bug Test specifically. or are able to bug test because well, you have real life, work, friends, wife/husband/ kids etc.

So where this "Thousands of testers" statement comes from is pulled out of the air, I would venture to say that there are probably only, a few "Dozen" of actual dedicated Alpha or Beta backers that actually Test and Bug Test. And I mean for most of the Beta time period. But no one can play every second of a Beta, they have to sleep sometime.

As I've said before, I don't understand why there shouldn't a open test server for general testing, and either the Betas be open, or have an open period of the Betas to get more potential testers in to catch bugs.

As someone said before more testers = less bugs, and I do believe in that precept.

That has nothing to do with the Beta testers, they wen't live when we where all telling them these bugs existed.. As mentioned, it's a learning curve, this update is very slick, and everything is going smoothly. Fingers crossed we get the final build before release to public.

It didn't take any dev time to process refunds because it's not the programmers doing it. Braben doesn't do it all you know. In fact I doubt he programmed any of this version.

I'd personally love to pay for beta access....but i dont think i'd actually test it more than once or twice per release.

The only reason i bought retail rather than premium beta was because up until release they said there would be a server wipe (and after wildstar dying because most of the people got burnt out on beta i was trying to avoid this), only for it not to of happened and all the gamma players carried their stuff through and enjoyed the benefits of those loverly 7mill rare trade runs.

It sound sad but now im running a fully A class anaconda...i'd just pay for the discount more than anything else.

There's the Beta Servers and then there's the actual Test environments.

The Beta Servers are exclusive to Backers/Beta-Testers, unless they need more people and open it up for others. I guess that'll happen once in a while.
The Test environments in the Galaxy are Admin/Developer only - you or I will never ever get access to these and those that have access are likely under a strict NDA.

With such short Beta-Phases, I'm fairly confident they can't smash all Bugs anyway - only show-stoppers and easy-fixes are being treated; the rest falls in queue for the following minor updates.

stop being facetious, you know EXACTLY what i'm talking about, I'm talking about a proper test server. Not the dev internals servers

rather, I HOPE you know what I'm talking about. I would think after 5 pages it would be understood.

yes it did, someone or several someones has to stop what they were doing to put those refunds out, properly. That and tickets to support. It took extra time. Not much mind you, but yes it did.

They should be the same thing actually.

It was support staff that did the refund not a programmer.

I think this would go better in the Suggestions forum as "Please can you open up a test server with X,Y,Z parameters".
As it is, you are asking the community a question they cannot answer and you knew that when you posted.
It feels like back in the early WoW days when people would title threads as "Blue plz answer this" and they almost exclusively didn't, other than to lock the thread after the inevitable flame war.

Implementation problems I can see are: if everything costs 10cr, it is hard to discipline people to test anything other than their dream ship load out. Players are not salaried QA and not everyone (me included) has the discipline to actively hunt, let alone report bugs in betas (Wildfire for example). If everything is real cost it takes a long time to afford the top spec gear, so people end up making the Test server their home and become hopelessly parochial about it.

your request is coming across as you want access to beta either by paying for a beta access or having it opened up free and your not happy that you cant test the new content , but you are also trying to sound like you want a test area to try stuff out without hurting your main character slot, so im not sure if you genuinely just want a test area or beta access, I guess the only way to know is if Fdev offered a test server for all that was 1 build behind the current live build and if that would satisfy you.

Enty

I would like to know if or any access to the Test Server is ever going to made public, or in the fundraising sense, are they ever be sold as a "Game Extra" in the store.

Hi OP,

As far as we're aware access to Beta testing for releases or patches will not be made public for the foreseeable future, I doubt if ever. I also doubt very much if they will ever be sold as an "Extra".

Why..... Because it's a perk for all of those who backed the game via KS. Simple as.

Clearly there are more than enough KS backers testing for Frontier to be happy with, other wise they possibly might consider making Beta's available to all. However, this clearly isn't the case, so the answer to your question is, No.

Regards

PS: Staggered that this has gone on for 6 pages! :p

Perhaps you should go and look at the beta 1.1 forum in the archives and see just how many of those bugs were reported both on the forums and in ticket form. Here is a 6 page topic on the showstopper Collision Bug, complete with video. There were also other topics on it dating back as far as day one of the 1.1 beta test commencing.

The problem with major bugs getting through to live in v1.1 was not to do with lack of reports, it was entirely due a completely inadequate ticket system where nobody got any feedback as to whether their ticket had even been looked at. Thankfully this time around FDEV's new forum based bug reporting system seems to be paying dividends, we can all see the issues being reported, the QA teams responses and the large list of fixes coming with each new test build. Will any major issues make it to live? Sure it's a possibility but it's much less likely now they've moved away from the inadequate ticket system.

As to the access for non-beta users, it's not like they need any more as there is in excess of 100,000 users who have access should they choose to use it. FDEV did however plan to have an upgrade path, this was outlined by Michael Brookes in the Development Update - 15th Jan thread:

Currently beta testing will be available for those who already have beta access for the main game. For players participating in the beta tests there will be a separate mechanism for playing so testing does not affect your game and that you can continue to play the retail version as well. Options for players currently without beta access to be able to purchase beta access will be available. Details will be made available nearer the time.

However in the very same thread there was also a very vocal minority who claimed that FDEV should be paying them for beta testing instead of expecting them to pay in order to gain access. After such heavy criticism from a few self-important individuals is it any wonder that there has been no mention of an upgrade path to beta any time since?
