Just imagine it this way:
RNG hyperdictions! Those with countermeasures against this EMP will be seen as hostile from the Thargoids. Those without will just be disabled, scanned and than they will be let alone.

This would be a possible way to choose "combat" or to choose "visitor"

I could get behind this, actually. Not only have I no desire to grind again for gear, I am also opposed to all the current saber rattling against the Thargoids, and sincerely hope FD have planned more for their story than just yet another "evil aliens want to kill as all because they are evil and alien" scenario (yawn).

I don't put much stock in speculation; the human imagination is too wild and rich for a games company to fairly stand a chance of bringing our crazy flights of fancy into reality with satisfactory results.
Instead, I've adopted a "wait and see approach." That way, I won't be disappointed because I'm not expecting anything.
