Thargoid FPS (with Drones) in Update 15 - Preview Footage

I love the look of the revenant ground missions. Looks like a classic stealth fps playstyle is possible (Tenchu / Metal Gear Solid etc); you can see where they're "looking", there's great atmosphere with the "searchlights" or alien scanning beams, or whatever. It's a really scifi horror look, combined with a really clear mechanic to show you where they're looking. Looks like there's a green/red indicator for "scanning/engaging". Feels like this is set up with a basic mechanic / rules structure for sneaking around, finding hiding places, sprinting between buildings, and having terrifying moments of being cornered / almost discovered.

They also look pretty chunky (although it's hard to tell from the footage) so it seems like they should be able to cope with the overwhelming firepower the Elite Commander community will be able to bring to bear in fire teams with air support. It'll be interesting to see how the mechanics play out in mixed-unit teams. I foresee hilarious experiments with missiles, mines and ship/fighter/srv/on foot combos.

We may have to nuke them from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

I think the thing that I find strangest is the comment about the Scavengers deconstructing the Thargoid crashed ships. Obviously there is a clue in their names but It just doesn't seem to fit with their behaviour.

I always thought they were cleaning the mycoid off the ships so that they could take off again. I assumed that was why they appear to have crash landed on Barnacle sites after being struck by the virus, so the Meta Alloys could be used to help repair them.

It just seems a bit odd to me.

On the ground mission front, Fireytoad took a different approach and made it into a sort of command centre "found footage" style. Which I think shows more like a team attempting the missions would be like.

shooting skimmers is what we did 5 years ago, its big disappointment and it wont make me play the game again

I also want Thargoids in-the-flesh like the Aliens movies. Just recreate the Aliens-style gameplay in ED.

Those drones should not be bullet-sponges. If it takes 5 minutes to destroy 1 drone thats too much.

We need combat inside those beautiful base interiors! Use the game assets! In the meantime I'll gladly take some Revenant action.

Seconded. That's what people truly want, not some flying drones. Let players sneak around infested bases (and inside a Thargoid mothership after disabling its defenses). It should not just be shooting. Add exploration, puzzles, unlockable lore, loot, rescue NPCs. Add variety (procedural) otherwise people will only do it once.

I'm starting to get why they just ignore player feedback. Seems like no matter what they do, somebody's going to be complaining.

Take a deep breath and try to have a more positive mindset. You're getting more content, for free! I bet you could even enjoy it if you went into it without being determined not to.

Seriously, constructive feedback on content that you have played is fine, but ragging on new content you haven't even tried yet as being terrible is just ridiculous.

Agreed. The content isn't even released yet, and people are complaining. Some people can't be pleased, and the rest of us suffer because of them.

I think the phenomena shows that some are here only to complain about the game..

And I guess we all already know that Frontier is damned whether they do or not.

Wonder if dive-bombing tactics are valid against the Scavengers/Revenants; take a shock mine- or unguided missile-equipped "Strike Eagle" and release weapons just before glide exit.

I guess I'm going to have to find people to squad up with for these on-foot missions.

A look at a few things coming in Update 15, which includes on foot Thargoid combat against "drones", a new class of "Hunter" Thargoid called the Glaive, plus a new Oydssey mission type. Video includes a look at some of the footage Frontier showed a few of us last week.
Why does Frontier always do this cloak and dagger type of updates? Why can't they be normal developers?
Inform players in advance that they are working on on-foot Thargoid combat, release few art pictures inbetween, some info behind what they wish to achieve with this?
N O R M A L way of doing things ... :alien:

The new Revenants are a hovering enemy. Lots of people saying they're just reskinned Skimmers, but the only similarity is the propulsion. Does that mean actual on foot Thargoids would just be reskinned NPCs? Are the Interceptors just reskinned ships and the scouts reskinned fighters?

How could they have done a flying vehicle that would have been completely unique. I really don't get it.

Well, for a start, they could perhaps have done actual thargoids, rather than floaty things that seem to behave like skimmers, just with different models and different special effects.

Hell, even their AI looks the same as skimmers. In the video the guy just keeps hiding behind a building and the skimmers... sorry, reventants don't seem to make any move to... you know... go around it.

There's probably no more money in Elite Dangerous. With Console dead, and half of playerbase left cause game specs in Odyssey are too high now. Players, even if still play, will no longer invest money in to the game, since there is no Road Map, no info on future content what so ever. All cloak and dagger with Frontier in ED.

I am just glad they can check mark " Thargoid on-foot combat " as a new feature in the game.
