Thargoid FPS (with Drones) in Update 15 - Preview Footage

hmm the positive: The Update sounds at least interesting enough to take as short look at Elite again

the negative: It also looks like the Thargoid War still lacks incentives to keep me playing after the novelty of the Ground Thargoids and the Hunter wears off after a few days. There's apparently still nothing for me to gain or earn by participating in the war effort (I don't need credits, I don't waste my time with engineering anymore).

FDev is still pushing out new content for this game. That doesn't say "dead game" or "maintenance mode" to me. Plus what we've seen so far isn't all of what's coming in the new update.

While I'm sure it would be technically possible to do more, this game is already hideously complex (at least "under the hood" so to speak), and FDev will always have to balance that against the fact that they will have limited development resources no matter what. I think it's doing alright for a game with no subscription model and a rather limited selection of optional cosmetics to purchase.

I look forward to seeing what the rest of the update has to offer.

I'm not much up for space AX combat, but the need to get safely into (and out) thargoid taken system and operate in occupied settlements looks great. I really look forward to it :) ... I do not like to make builds (ship/on-foot stuff) without purpose, but this here seems like something with what I personally will have a lot of fun :)

The new content looks alright. Excited, but skeptical about what (and how much) is being revealed inside the maelstroms.

A small adjustment to the material pick-up batch size from 3 to 6 would certainly be a very welcome addition to this patch, since the feature rework is still MIA until 2024 at least.

Engineering still is one of the bigger factors that keeps players away, or at least decreases their incentive to play and engage with the current content. Everywhere I look, engineering is mentioned as to why people ditched the game - even though it might be the loud minority (and elite has other problems as well), Fdev certainly should be able to something about that issue without spending a year to investigate.

Well, for a start, they could perhaps have done actual thargoids, rather than floaty things that seem to behave like skimmers, just with different models and different special effects.
If Frontier ever actually add on foot Thargoids then it will be the same thing. Nothing will live up to what some players have built their own expectations of them to be, and so many people want different things from them.

Having the AI set up so it doesn't try to chase the player under a covered area that the craft doesn't look like it would be able to fit in, is obviously a conscious decision. And this thread alone has shown that some people like the perimeter style and some don't. Damned if you do, damned if you don't :)

As J said, if none of this had of been revealed and people had of discovered it for themselves when taking one of these new missions, then I imagine the impact of it would have been a lot higher. Seeing a small piece of curated footage with no idea when it was taken, or what else is involved in the missions/scenarios means people jump to conclusions.

But what do I know :) I don't even do combat, none of the stuff that's been revealed holds any interest to me from a gameplay point of view. From an aesthetic point of view I love it. I will just have to hope there's more for me in this update than the last.

I wonder what all those icons below the shield integrity display mean? Will they be of any use when I'm really busy in a Xeno fight?
UPDATE: Oops per Ned Flandalorian post below NOW I remember them and never used them much. I've only seen some of them
in the upper right info bar and never in this area. Guess I'll watch it a little more.

Meanwhile ever since we've had Thargoids to deal with there have been AX, Guardian and later engineered weapons versus human weapons which are not as effective against them. Now that there are Thargoid drones I assume that we will be obtaining on foot weapons or at least upgraded "special" ammo to deal with them. I wonder which upcoming Community Goal will be providing that.

A look at a few things coming in Update 15, which includes on foot Thargoid combat against "drones", a new class of "Hunter" Thargoid called the Glaive, plus a new Oydssey mission type. Video includes a look at some of the footage Frontier showed a few of us last week.
I'd manage to avoid spoilers until i saw your thread title, so next time you make a thread could you please NOT put a spoiler in the thread title before things are released?
I for one would appreciate that.
Thanks

A few days entertainment provided by a free update seems reasonable to me.

That's difficult, the thread title must have some relationship to the thread content so that people know what they are looking at. I suppose it could have been just a generic title, say "Update 15" but then people would open it and see the spoiler anyway without realising it had spoilers in it.

I assume he means it could have just said Update 15 spoilers, then when looking through DD you can avoid that thread. Rather than now if you're just looking through the sub forum you already know that Update 15 contains Thargoid FPS with drones.

Thanks ozric, that's exactly what i mean

Edit: and it actually appeared in the higher level forums view because it was the last commented thread

Looks interesting enough to me to jump back in the cockpit for a whirl. I was raiding abandoned settlements in goid territory the last time I played so the new drones look like they will make that more interesting.
Here's to U15 Skål ! ..wait wrong game

Hmmm, don’t like the sound of having to unlock the field neutraliser thing, and then having to do it for each ship as well. I’m just avoiding Thargoid combat completely because of all the hoops that need to be jumped through first to get a viable ship for AX combat so this looks like more content I’ll only see in videos.

Hopefully proper Thargoid on-foot combat will appear in a later Update.
This ^^

I really don't like being funneled down a single path (or grind) to achieve an unlock. I don't understand why FD gated Thargoid combat behind a massive grind. It's possibly the biggest thing in the game, an alien race that is at war with humanity, yet to take part you have to jump through ridiculous hoops over and over...hard pass from me.

It's a real shame and like so much of ED, for me, it just missed the mark.
