Mind that this is not quite so simple generally due to the swarm, more so in a planetary scenario without swarms. Otherwise, I can confirm that to an extent; I removed a Medusa in Poqomathi just as it reached completion, much of the damage being very short range, though with two Plasmas and two Shards rather than all-Shards. That was indeed with the Fer-de-Lance and its inability to repair, though I did orbit while exposing the petals; I took something like 10% hull damage and 15% damage to its highest Module reinforcement.
Yes, and I was all the more amazed by the video I mentioned because it was in space (the swarms were simply ignored :D). The ship did take rather a lot of damage though! Also, it was pretty kind of the Medusa to just sit still and take the beating. I think I'd describe the whole thing as "unsubtle but effective"...

Victory in HIP 20527! We have many returning systems, a few sequels such as Aowicha and Chibis, some Alert activity at Heng (almost mistaken on my part for Jeng again), some empty Alert activity at Col 285 Sector AF-E b13-0, and joining the fight are Bormuninus, Bagalya and Col 285 Sector AF-E b13-5!

I can imagine! Each swarm will be just shy of 100 missiles, surely plus a non-trivial amount of swarm projectiles taken due to remaining stationary. This gives me an idea though; I intend discovering how little time, credits and flight effort one can invest in building something which can do that to a Cyclops.

Goodness; victories in HIP 38225 and Lunguni! Either something changed or something large occurred, because that progress rate suggests almost double the usual number of systems. If that rate continues then the projection is 17–18 systems, where I am indeed treating the carried progress portion to help with the total but to have no increase over time.

We have returning Alert activity at Juipedun, Ahol and Vukurbeh, many familiar Invasion systems including Ebisu, Minawara and Cao Tzu, and joining the fight are HIPs 4617 and 38235, 63 Eridani and Ixbaksha!

Victories in Aowicha and Garongxians! HIP 21991 to follow very soon, after which those wishing to remain at M. Taranis would actually be as well to keep HIP 23716 safe once again (Wakata forever!). As an investment it seems brazen compared to previous cycles, but given the opening progress rate I have HIP 23716 at 15th projecting 1629%, or 13th Invasion projecting 1534% (that is to say, 129% surplus or 234% Invasion-specific surplus for further targets).

Otherwise, we have plentiful targets at M. Oya, and others scattered quite evenly across the middle row of Maelstroms. Fresh Alert activity spotted at Bhotepa, Pathamon returns for another Invasion after being defended previously in Week 10, and joining the fight are Gamil, HIP 19157 and HIP 20509!

Victory in HIP 21991! While the Invasion activity continues quite well, I can see the pair of Alerts upcoming. Jeng returns after all, as well as HIP 21946, and I see some eviction activity in the empty system Hyades Sector GW-W d1-88!

Juipedun has decent enough progress for the moment, though at present it will be relying on at least a third of its progress coming from Commanders moving there from Invasions, so it is likely enough to finish but could always use more trade help. Col 285 Sector AF-E b13-0 is an empty system, so that Alert is very much a salvage operation; this aspect is new enough that there is no honest way to predict the feasibility, so by all means try some search-and-rescue but please do so with no expectations.

Regarding Col 285 Sector AF-E b13-0, this is a test operation I'm probably doing the most on. What we are finding is that bulk tissue sample deliveries are making the most movement. If I drop off 48 interceptor tissue samples, it can easily move 2-3 pips. If you can build a ship that can avoid or absorb damage from interceptors for a sustained period of time, you can farm them for tissue samples as they hyperdict you on the way out. My record so far is 28 tissue samples off a basilisk, which took about 10 minutes. That is roughly enough to move the progress bar 1 pip.

50 pips total.

Further experimentation is pretty consistent that 16-18 cyclops tissue samples are moving things by one pip, and my current record is 47 in one hyperdiction.

What's the total number of pips required? (I thought that info was in this thread but searches haven't turned up the magic number :))

Fifty; one of the first things I did when first scouting for signs of progress was to count those. I then went ahead and represented them as 2% each—if you were wondering why every single system has a suspiciously even number!

Fascinating! I had very much suspected you caused that. If it helps to introduce terminology, at INIV we call that process "summoning"; pulling a Thargoid into a system that way.

Insofar as my Maelstrom-equipped Imperial Clipper sounds perfect for this, I shall give it a try myself. Plenty of armour, 15% heat under thrust, 550 speed, eight luxurious Universal limpets at once. I have a few questions:
  • Are the samples corrosive?
I think I can adjust things a bit to hold more corrosive cargo if needed, or manage a bit of module damage.
  • Where do you sell them?
With no ports in the system, I imagine that Elite must be tracking the system from which the samples were taken.
I think if I cover the Clipper in Flak launchers and remove the swarm, I could then orbit indefinitely even without using a beam.

Samples are corrosive.
You need to sell them at any rescue ship.

Keep in mind that the interceptor will get enraged eventually after its normal timer. My cutter can tank the swarm missiles for some time, with some help from flak, but be prepared for that.

Thank you, and definitely a Cutter is indeed a better idea here. I just now grabbed a handful of samples using the Clipper, which is able to avoid damage despite swarms renewing all the time, however doing so also avoids the Research limpets returning with a sample. It did not help that I could only summon double-Cyclops, though the same problem exists with just one target.

Invasion activity is calming a bit, at present looking to be around 13 Invasion systems with good surplus targets already present. The Alert in Juipedun is holding pace and has reduced the projected deficit slightly (projecting 60%), though will now need an extra push if it is to complete.

Thanks to @yttrbio the tissue-sampling operation in Col 285 Sector AF-E b13-0 should actually complete the system, and moreover it sounds to me as if these need only a couple of Commanders each. I will assemble that Cutter later today, join the effort there if it is not complete already, then perhaps try it in Juipedun!

What is this "tissue-sampling operation"?

What is this "tissue-sampling operation"?

Refer to the messages from @yttrbio just earlier, the first of which is here! It is based on having investigated it a bit last cycle with results here, from which the critical part is:
Black Box: 18
Wreckage Components: 54
Occupied Escape Pod: 43
Damaged Escape Pod: 25

This didn't get another pip, but it did jump from 4th to 2nd on the most-progressed list, so salvage DOES work in unpopulated alerts, even if the UI doesn't say so.

The key discovery is that salvage helps progress unpopulated Alert systems, and that salvage includes the Thargoid tissue samples. The Galaxy map reveals that tissue samples work for populated Alerts, and the discovery was that they also work for unpopulated Alerts.

That being the case, the method is to enter an unpopulated Alert system, then simply high-wake to an Invasion or Control system to provoke a Hyperspace destabilisation. That has the effect of summoning a Thargoid into the Alert system, from which one can then extract tissue samples by using Research limpets.

My earlier attempt with an evasive Clipper was inefficient because orbiting a Thargoid does not mix well with stopping to let the Research limpets reach the cargo hold. The suggested approach was to use a Cutter shielded well enough to stop any module damage, and stacked with hull reinforcement to outlast the phasing damage. I am going to try something like this later today if I can, though mind that I may have forgotten something critical in that loadout. I think Resistance matters not for phasing damage, though if it does then it should be adjusted to have a few Guardian hull reinforcements.

I think Resistance matters not for phasing damage, though if it does then it should be adjusted to have a few Guardian hull reinforcements.
Phasing damage is converted from caustic to absolute, so resistances do not matter. It's also only around 10% of the original damage, from the look of that build I think you'd be better off switching some of the HRPs to shield cells.

I would actually ditch the HRPs for research limpet controllers, rather than shield cell boosters, and just bail on the effort when your shield gets low. Eventually, you'll run out of space to store samples, so you may as well go for gathering rate over durability. You'll also want to pop in a size 6 cargo rack, because the success rate for limpets is around 50%, and you'll need some extras if you want to fill up the corrosion-resistant cargo racks. My current record is 47 cyclops tissue samples in a 15 minute interaction in this build. You can take a look here if you want.

Got it, thank you; with 21278 shield after 4 points to SYS, or 23826 if I go without the Xeno scanner, that should need just 2364–2647 hull to support it. Taking the latter and with a 6B Shield cell providing an extra 5135 after SYS, that gives 28961 shield needing 3217 hull but supported by 3471 hull just from the Military slots, which works out quite well!

Good idea with the additional Research limpets; I think I will combine that with one class 6 Shield cell bank and take 10 limpets rather than your 11, resulting in this. Thank you for all of this!

Also if I may suggest, your Thermal vent is doing almost nothing for you there—at least not moving that slowly with rarely under 20% heat, in a large shielded Cutter, with Flight Assist enabled and having to use the Cargo scoop occasionally. Then again, as I found with the Clipper the appropriate movement while cold is also detrimental for the returning limpets, thus not really worth attempting it. Would it be better to remove the Beam laser and just remain relatively still instead, allowing a faster limpet return journey and therefore faster use of limpets?
