That Fer de lance, though!

I don't like it.

It looks too much like the [Hauler if that is the way it's going to turn out.

I would prefer it to look something like it's older self in this other concept art....

Good work dude. I would be really happy if the final design heads more in this direction.

This is awesome

Heh someone just posted this on Reddit :

Same line of thinking, I'm not too keen on that curved upper hull though (hence the top wing removal).

Its obviously not correct, and sorry for the long quote but I'm on my phone and doing it like this is much easier, but the ship they speculate as the FDL is the ship I'm most interested in seeing, any ideas what ship it is...if it ever actually makes it to the game
Now on the eve of the Alpha launch there is much anticipation as to what ships will be revealed to fans.

Wiki does reference the starting lineup of ships thus far.

But even those are rather scant on information. Hopefully this will change as we gain more access to the game itself, and maybe glean a fact or two with the aid of those privy to the Alpha.

So far we can determine that there are 10 playable ships from previous games, with another 3 added for something new and exclusive to the Elite Dangerous Universe.

These are in order of sequence:

The Adder, The Anaconda, The Asp, The Cobra Mk. III

The Viper Mk. II, The Fer De Lance? (I speculate this to be it)

If you look at the lines and contours of this large ship you will note its diamond shaped silhouette. It doesn't end in a pointed tip or cone as the original, it seems a re-imagined version of the former vessel. However since its in the presumed lineup of confirmed ships and we are yet to officially see it, I wouldn't put it past the dev team to have tackled this design early on. Its featured since the kickstarter (as a generic framework for freighters I guess) The Fer De Lance takes at least a crew of 12 to fly. So it certainly looks imposing enough to be such a ship.

And the newcomers to Elite Dangerous

The Dolphin, The Orca, Freighter III Concept

and of course there is also alot of speculation whether the Imperial Courier will be part of the playable ships lineup or become relegated as a military NPC vessel with redefined function in the gameworld or even as a smaller variant or distant cousin to the original. I hope for our sake this is not the case.

Empire Courier (The Imperial Courier?)

Both these photos are taken from concept art and images on the ED wiki page or newsletters. The Empire Courier (presumably the Imperial Courier) is listed as an Empire Scout ship. So either its role or function is still inconclusive. No stats on the size and scale of this ship. The first image seems large in scale, however the second incarnation could easily pass as a smaller attack vessel.

Anyways happy gaming for you Alphas out there, and feel free to report here for any unconfirmed ships on your findings :D

I'm torn its a very pretty boat but for me a fer de lance should have a much longer pointed nose.

If they could keep the back end and just stretch the coordinates of the nose half as far again out it'd be great.

That and a red and yellow paint job :)

Take it back make it look like bitstorm's drawing!!!!

this one must be the FDL MKII/III/IV... well a newer version of it, i feel that this is normal that it gets some modifications

I like the hull design, particularly the back view, even though I imagined it as more needle/spire shaped from the original '84 triangle mesh.
For specs and size I'm hoping for something Aspish but better, more clearly a fighter, and horribly expensive to buy, with its secondary roles as a status symbol and ship to be feared by plebs.

I wouldn't mind at all if those side wings disappeared though.

not sure it looks like a FdL but it does look sexy given this or the one from the wiki i'd go for the non wiki version to me it looks too much like the scorpio from blakes seven.

I believe this ship is the Federal Corvette which you can find mention of in the game files. It is about the right size to be considered a corvette, as it looks about on scale with an Anaconda, and it has the distinctive look of one of CD's Federal line ships.

As for the Fer-de-Lance, my guess is that it is at least as large as a Cobra, perhaps as big as an Asp. Ships in ED are known for their deceptively large cockpits, and that door on the back strikes me as one comparable to one of the heavy loading bays found on the larger ships such as the Type 7 or Anaconda. The composite engines also give that impression, as all smaller ships use two thrusters for primary propulsion. Unfortunately, something that early is lacking the presence of Hardpoints, ladder rungs, or anything else that would give away its size on a more definitive scale. My guess is that we will see hardpoints make their way onto the flat circular panels similar to the Adder, if I recall.

It doesn't really look like a fer de lance to me. I like the look, but I think they can do better. Maybe round off the bottom a bit, more like the original. Put the cockpit further forward and surround it in glass. Make it more pointy. Then it would look like a fer de lance.

I always saw the Fer De Lance as a exotic battle ready playboy yacht. More pointy than the new pic with odd curves and fins.

Maybe clip those side wing extensions and put some fins somewhere else.

Im surprised FD seem to be choosing not to take advantage of the strength of the original design shapes of the fer de lance from the earlier game. Why not work the design detail and logical cleverness within the parameters of the original hull? It had clear, obvious design shapes and lines, as demonstrated by Bitstorm's quick photoshop picture. Even though it was a rough and ready by his own admission, most people immediately identified it as a FDL, or at least preferred it.

I remember playing the original Elite with my best mate at the time when we sunk hours and hours into the game taking turns flying and manning the keyboard.

I can still recall that feeling of glimpsing a Fer De Lance in game where one of us would shout "FER DE LANCE, FER DE LANCE!!!!" and point feverishly at the screen while the other would go "WHERE, WHERE!"

This was because;

1. It wasn't a common appearance, and
2.You knew from that moment on, you had a fight on your hands as it could take some punishment but dish it out too!

I got a real rush just seeing this ship again and it took me back to being in my teens again. I really hope its just as much of a challenge to come up against one of them now, as it was back then. Having said that, it looks better from the rear TBH. Mind you that's where I'll be seeing it most, with some crosshairs on the drive ports! ;)

I can't wait to actually fly one though! :)

It's about Cobra sized I think. It's as long as the Cobra is wide. The cockpit looks about Cobra sized also however i suspect a 3 chair layout with the Pilot Cmdr in the middle front and two crew chairs angled behind to the sides.

I also suspect a 3 gun layout, two mediums and a centerline large in the nose. This thing is all about speed and pew.
