Many countries use the . as the thousand separator, it's quite common in Europe, although I understand the UK has now left Europe so the confusion is probably understandable!

Never knew that and here was me getting angry at people saying 5£ instead of £5 learn something everyday!

The UK left the EU, but is still happily in Europe as it has always been.
