The 2020 Dev Run: As Big As The Launch Run (?)

If it’s not fully realised earth likes or legs with fully explorable stations I’m going to feel a little let down, which is completely mental as all of that seems impossible.

I always used to love the guys who said 'Inhabited earth-likes should have been at launch!' :D

If it helps, this Reddit guy reckons there's signs of station work in the April files ;)

There are some references that they are working on first person interiors for space stations in the April update game files as well.

There is not much more that i can tell you. There are just some references to station interiors and "turbolifts" (with "buttons" and "terminals"). The source is in the files from the April update. I won't be any more specific than that since last time i violated a subreddit rule by revealing how to find such information.

However there isn't much there yet related to FP. That either means that they have basically just started working on that feature or that the fancy stuff is just not included in the live version. My opinion on this is, that they have only started working on FP very recently. Otherwise there'd be no reason why this would pop up now and not for example in the 3.3 patch already.

---

But related...

I just hope they aren't adding more potential to the game, and are realising some of the massive amount it's had since release instead.

You know full well it's gonna be both ;)

Given the timescale I'm setting the bar at full atmospheric functionality up to and possibly including Earth-likes, and spacelegs :)

The DLC will cost £100 on initial release to consume the LEP value not yet allocated then will be reduced to £20 a fortnight later to encourage people to actually buy it. The base game & Horizons DLC will be available by then for £2.99 each, the Premium starter pack with a bunch of skins will be a fiver.

Then six months later there will be an announcement that the servers are being switched off / Frontier will be sold / DB will retire.

I know you're big into LEP fulfillment R, but this is a joke prediction right?

(FWIW, my poe-faced prediction is: £40 AAA-game-pricing for the DLC, as with the launch title and Horizons. And for FDev to still exist at the end of 2021 ;))

I'm not much of a one for baseless predictions normally, but I can put a reasonable worst case scenario together ;)

And yes, I think waiting 5 years to get some idea of what has been bought is an utter shambles. I cannot imagine a customer who would consider that a reasonable timescale, only customers who do not care or have given up. It is disgraceful behaviour.

To be clear, it is not necessarily disgraceful that the customer must wait for the product, these things can take time to deliver. What is disgraceful is that no information has been made available about progress, or even what the current plan of action is.

I'll just take the refund for value not redeemed (about £80-£85 in my case) and buy whatever they eventually release when they release it. That way they can be as secretive as they like, take as long as they like & I can join the ain't care brigade.

Have you asked for a refund?

I went to the Gamescom party in August to discuss it with them in person. The freebie stuff for LEP holders came shortly after. I don't know what other influences had an effect of course, but FDev are aware of the issue.

I don't blame anyone, I don't think it's a cynical act, I just think the plan changed & was communicated poorly.

I think the fact that they're not telling us what they're working on is a really bad sign. It's a bad idea not to ask for feedback from your customers before you invest 2 years in developing something.

My suspicions are that the iceworlds and carriers were essentially finished, but they couldn't get them to work in realtime online, so fixing that is much, if not most, of the delay for the "biggie" update.

Just re-posting this thought here since it's vaguely relevant ...

So the recent "leak" (the one that predicted Planet Zoo a week before it came out) said space legs and base building was the focus of the 2020 update. It also suggested that atmos' landings wasn't on the roadmap. FD later commented (on a livestream iirc), without confirming or dening the leak that at least one of the things the leak said wasn't happening was definitely not true. My hope is that FD were referring to the atmos' landings comment so I'm still hoping we'll see something in this area in 2020 ... the new ice planets at the very least.

So, neither the dev's or fans can win. Both sides lose.

I'm shocked. :)

I don't think anyone's found the sweet spot yet on player input mid-dev. Subnautica's trello votes seem like the most the productive variant I know of. Devs still control the shape and workflow ultimately, but get an idea of playerbase preferences.

The short story is always going to be that design by committee is pants though, and most good games will still require vision & luck to be fusing away behind the scenes, fighting through their existing committee challenges. (Communities can help fine tune features better than they can help design them is what I reckon ;))

Obviously guys who got a say during Elite's alpha must feel the burn of ED's blackouts all the more now though.

(I'm fine with the principle of giving devs time to design. Less so for the marketing hype-management that piggybacks along with it though ;))

That's pretty intriguing. Have you got a timestamp at all? Or do you remember which vid it was in so I can search it out?

Only 3 things are really talked down in the leak. IE:

  • 'Haven’t seen any mention of atmospheric landings'
  • 'Don’t expect to see much between now and then.'
  • Also -
there is no Raxxla in Elite.

Would be interesting to hear their phrasing.
