The ARX Bamboozle - Cows to the Slaughter

So, how many of you have purchased the Krait Phantom salvage paint jobs with these awesome new ARX? I bought this pack back in May of this year, and it cost me a whopping $4. If you add them all up in the store post ARX, you're spending $10.60 for the same thing!

White knights, justify this, please. What exactly has changed with this paint pack to justify a 2.5X increase in price? Oh, and this isn't the only paint pack that has drastically increased in price. Almost everything has gone up significantly since the introduction of ARX. Luckily I have my purchase history because I'm already starting to forget what things used to actually cost.

I'm not surprised there aren't more threads about this topic because the purpose of ARX seems to be working perfectly. No one knows what they pay for anything anymore, and obfuscation is working so well, they don't even care. Why is the community OK with this? FDev can't get fleet carriers out the door in over two years, but by God, they'll get this new money-making scam out the door without delay! No matter how badly it up the actual game, ARX and the new store were there right on time! And everyone is super cool with this behavior and will always defend it? Madness!

Before you come back with the predictable "Yea, getting stuff for FREE now is way worse than before," you're kidding yourself. It would take you six weeks to earn ONE of those paint jobs and a grand total of 36 weeks to earn all of them. If that is "FREE" to you, then you must severely undervalue your time. 400 ARX a week is a joke. It's a sample of a drug to get you hooked so that you buy more.

As consumers, we should demand more transparency on what we are purchasing. I don't mind paying for things, but trying to bamboozle me by hiding costs is the quickest way to lose me as a customer.

We should be demanding that the actual cost of something in ARX is represented in real currency by the highest cost/ARX ratio, so we at least have a slight idea of what we are paying. I know I can whip out a calculator and figure it out, but that's not the point, and I obviously did that for this post. You shouldn't need to do that to figure out what you're paying for something, and with a tiny amount of effort, FDev could do it for you next to each item in the store. But, they won't unless we make them.

You know, cows never resist going to the slaughterhouse because they're too dumb to know what's going on around them. I guess that's what this community has become, a bunch of oblivious cows from which money is harvested. You can either choose to moo on or take a stand against dishonest business practices and demand more transparency. I'm taking that stand and refuse to purchase anything further from the store until it begins to demonstrate more honest business practices. I'm not asking for ARX to go away, I'm asking that we know what we are paying for something in real currency through the store.

Is it harder to tell what stuff cost in real money? Yes. But I can still work it out even tho I'm a cow. As long as they don't start selling credit packs, material packs and ships I'm going to stay in line for the slaughter.

What concerns me more tho, is how earning ARX is affecting the way I play. Using the material trader and engineers, boost my ARX too fast - leading me to wait until the next week to do more upgrades. Exploration, bounty-hunting, missions and mining earns to litle and so on.
While not as agressive as daily login bonuses and the likes, it's still a hustle.

Damn right OP, we should all reject the free Arx each week, that will send FD a message they can't ignore! How dare a company try to streamline their purchasing method, and attempt to make a profit at the same time - damn hypocrisy of these corporate fat cats. They should be giving up not only free cosmetics, but the entire game for free. And not only that, work harder and give us free new content every week that is 100% bug free on every console and on every PC. And if some poor consumer is having network problems, FD should not only fix those as well, but pay for the internet so their valued customers can play their game.

Yes I am being sarcastic ...

Well, i kept complaining about the missing paint pack... until Will confirmed that there are no plans to introduce the paintpack back.
So... buy no more than 2 paints and you will come cheaper.
Add the free Ark and... Welcome to the Arx Camper Club :D

It's because Elite is a niche game. Its not a battlefront 2 or call of duty. Its not going to get scrutinised for monitization unlike EA or Activision. And elite is mostly played by old dudes who could give two cents that fdev is slowly screwing them over.

I've shamelessly taken advantage of the weekly free Arx and have limited my store purchases to those only. Not bought an Arx pack yet that may change though if/when FDev release something more interesting (wink Chrome nudge).

Right now Arx packs act as an additional barrier of entry for my brain which is something my wallet is very happy about. I used to spend 10-15 Euros a month on cosmetics in the store, since September that dropped to zero.

I have spoken to my lawyer and believe this is a unfair representation ; we feel you should remove the term 'slolwy' ;).

That and the fact that before i could get 6 paints for 300 Frontier Points. Now seeing a single paint costing 3000 Arxes... well, it's a nice psychological barrier
What also helps massively is the fact I already own a ton of paint packs for the majority of ships. I'm just glad I bought them before Arx went live as I do regularly change paints so am not one of those "ah but it's cheaper now because I only ever bought a pack for 1 colour" people. Would cost me a fair bit more now if I had to purchase them all individually.

I bought the Krait Phantom Salvage paint pack pre-ARX.

I only have one Krait Phantom, so I only actually use one of the paints from it.

I could have got that cheaper separately with ARX ... and since I bought cosmetics rarely pre-ARX and am patient, I would actually have got it for free after those six weeks (instead, since I already had the paint, I got a free nameplate for it after six weeks)

So, works absolutely fine for me, will probably never need to spend a real-life penny on cosmetics again, but "previously bought one or two cosmetics a year, will now get three or four free cosmetics a year" probably isn't the primary audience for this stuff.

Mooooo

You can call me cow or white knight, it doesn't matter. Since Arx released, I bought many cosmetics, more than even before with a 16800(+900) pack. If put the stun gun to my head hurts in this way, then yeah, 'choot'.

Comparing FDev with EA and Activision live service monitization, is like comparing a slap on the chin with getting run over by a train and then have the train reverse and run you over again. But we are getting slapped, slowly... yeah.

We’ll just to let you know the old system on consoles didn’t obfuscate the numbers, you could work it out easily (in some currencies anyway). It either wasn’t good enough or a designer is trying to earn brownie points from initiative.

Also I maintain a spreadsheet with arx costs, especially since if you pay via the website you have an option of 3 currencies. It’s noted that frontier add a tangible markup to their currency conversion over steam which does the spot price.

I think you can get used to it after a while. You can actually get em back by getting over the flashy one and just getting one of the basics and moving on. Its even funnier because you can earn the basic paints in 2-4 weeks so you don’t have to pay them at all sometimes. I’ve definitely spent less than I would have with arx from this mental setup (and I easily used to buy things in the store).

Though the above is more an expression of negative good will than a real commentary on arx.. from my perspective anyway.
