The Cassiopeia Project

I'm currently on my way to the Rift as it happens; got distracted by the very bright line of white-blue stars in the NGC something nebula so I still have a fair way to go. Not sure how much time I commit etc but I'm up for joining. I'll take a look at the sign up sheet etc later.

This sounds very interesting! Might even be of relevance to solve the Formidine Mistery.

Yes. The Formidine Mystery. That which Commanders rarely speak of and only then in hushed tones. Indeed this expedition itself is somewhat mysterious in that none of us really seem to know exactly where we're going or what we're looking for yet. Let me see if I've got this right.

My understanding is that the expedition's search for candidate non-sequence stars that could be identified with SuperNova Remnant Cassiopeia A, will take us some 11,000 Light-years from the Bubble into the Formidine Rift, a sparsely-populated region of the Galaxy between the Perseus Arm and the Outer Arm. The stars in this region appear to be few and far between, with gaps of dozens of light-years in places, and to reach them dedicated long-range exploration starships will be required, plentifully loaded with jumponium. It looks like a really excellent place to get stranded, even with a jumponium range of 100+ L-y. Hence collecting much Polonium and Yttrium before leaving.

Furthermore, it is reported that the Formidine Rift is mentioned by Drew Wagar in his novelised history of the Prism War of AD3297, as containing a mystery more dangerous even than Thargoids. It certainly contains something that is yet to be discovered, knowledge of which is rumoured to be suppressed by the Galactic Superpowers. However a number of prior expeditions into the Formidine Rift have so far found nothing so remarkable. An obvious clue is in the name Formidine, a Latin noun taken from the verb formidare, meaning to become rigid in the face of fear.

Have I understood correctly? Because I hope that expedition recruits understand it too.

Regarding Imperial expedition's detachment departure:

Since I did not get any feedback regarding interested commanders, I, as a self appointed Imperial Attaché decree, that Imperial element of expedition will be leaving from Prism system at 17:00 server time on 5th of November. I am regarding it as short, purely ceremonial event. I'll just say a few words for RP feel at local comms, anyone who turns up is welcome to say something too of course and then we can make coordinated jump towards expedition's meeting point. I was, sadly, unable to provide heightened armed presence in the system as other matters of grave importance to the Empire kept me occupied (read: my work schedule is just a mess right now sadly), but since it is possible that I'll be only commander waiting there, I do not deem it critical to have armed escort.

In the spirit of peaceful cooperation and for the Glory of Emperor, praise Her!

You know to only go for the Metallic Meteorites? They're the Prize. You can recognize them on the SRV Scanner. Mesodideroos whatever you call them sometimes drop rares too. But you can pop Bronzites and Outcrops all night and get nothing. Just land somewhere flat and head flat out in a straight line towards a mountain, star or planet, and only investigate Metallic signals. This link helps identify the signals: http://www.wavescanner.net/

Aye I usually find enough of those, but mostly outcrops last night as I was going around, I needed base stuff so was getting them, I usually land in large craters with central peaks as these tend to have a good amount of stuff, which makes sense because of how they are formed.

Got my Conda up to a tasty 38ly when fully fuelled and loaded, that gives me fuel for 650+LY and 32T of cargo, another 10LY if I drain the tank, not bad considering I haven't even gone back to the bone :)

Also decided to go with some fuel transfer limpets so I can help out if anyone runs dry.

Do we have anyone going with fuel transfer limpets btw? I'm looking at my loadout now and I can fit them on my conda and still keep the range over 35 so if we need I can fit.

The Pourquoi Pas? will be taking 58 limpets with a minimal 1D Fuel Limpet Controller, and she'll keep a range of over 46 L-y on a full tank of 96t of fuel, which will take me 550+ L-y without refuelling. I'm also taking 6 Hutton Mugs in case anyone needs to keep their drink warm.

MISSION UPDATE - 4 NOV 3302

Almost time to launch!

For a while there I was worried that I wouldn't be able to make it back in time from my most recent trip to Colonia. I was wrong. I got back to civilization on Tuesday and was pleased to finally receive my Elite explorer's wings while selling my accumulated data.

It's time to finish up kitting out our ships for the journey! I've been flying with a 2nd & 3rd fuel tank but, thanks to the new route filters I think I might not need them. I'm chucking them in favor of the additional jump range. I had considered packing some limpets and a fuel limpet controller but there seem to be more then one Anaconda coming along that are providing refueling services. Thanks guys!

I bought a new paint job for the mission and also sprung for the Asp customization kit. The DSEV Ouroboros hardly looks recognizable! I'll have to post a picture of the "before and after". My old Asp certainly looked like it had seen the other side of the galaxy with more bare metal showing then actual paint.

I AM READY TO GO! I can barely wait to get this party started.

I've placed the week one itinerary on the first page, post #2. The times for Cpt. Bilsn's meeting in Prism has been updated on the Itinerary and I've penciled in a launch time of 23:00 for the Alliance one in 78 Ursae Majoris. I'm going to try and make it to both Chi Orionis AND 78 Ursae M. but can't promise anything on that second one. Getting enough sleep before heading off to "real world work" is a priority unfortunately.

If we can get people to post which, if any, of the launch events they plan on attending that would be helpful. Don't worry, nobody is going to crucify you if you don't make it.

I hope to see many of you on Saturday! I'll be adding mission members to my in-game friends list so I you see a request from Finn McMillan, that's me!

this got me to thinking...

Who else and how may are planning on packing heat on the expedition?

I'm bringing a single medium MC just for fun

Ooo that's a nice range :) Mines at 39 Fully loaded but I'm going to stick a few large pulse lasers on I think, I'm happy with anything over 35 fully loaded

@Jaiotu, congrats on the Elite! I am 19% away and hoping to make it on this trip!

I'm bringing two pulse lasers. I'm VERY concerned over the exploration probes that Sirius Corporation was working on last month.

I'm pretty well armed (and protected) actually. Managing to pack a load of pulse and MC turrets, decent shields, hull reinforcement and fighter and still maintain 38ly range.

One thing I don't have too much of is jumponium, so I'll be keeping on eye out for that on the way over.

As an '84er and a backer on Founder tier I don't believe in tinfoil, I believe in bullying designers into delivering exciting imaginative content.

Nonetheless, as an experienced Elite explorer I don't really expect the expedition to encounter any combat situations, and I don't expect armaments to be any use whatsoever in encounters with unknowns. So I've kept it down to 3D Shields for bumpy landings, and a single Small Light Weight Gimballed Beam in case I have to cut anything open, then I get to keep my immense 117+ L-y maximum jumponium range. Some of those gaps in the Rift look scary impossible.

I was toying with the idea of installing a Fighter Bay; I only lose 2L-y range, but nah. Weapons will just be dead weight. I've filled up with fuel limpets instead, which I can always ditch if I get stuck. And if I encounter a Sirius probe I'll keep my distance and call support over before investigating.

I signed on in '85 when Elite was released on the C64. 117+ jump range? Who needs more then 7? And aft-mounted military lasers.

Seriously though, since 2.2 is chocked full of surprises I've started carrying at least minimal armament. We PROBABLY won't need it but who knows?

Besides, these guns can barbeque grumbles so they're at least good for that.

I'll try to attend the Federation launch event, which will be only my second interaction with other CMDR's, the first being a cheery "o7" one day. Had to look up what it meant.

I haven't run with guns yet, but I installed two gimbled pulse lasers just to experiment. From on-line reading, I'm told that a Type-6 with two pulse lasers and likely power management issues isn't what you would call intimidating.

Thanks to those helpful engineers, I'm up to a 41ly jump range, however.

Since you brought it up, I flew with a copilot in my C64 Cobra--took turns flying/shooting and working keyboard controls. In those days, ATARI-style joystick input blocked keyboard input on the C64. I fondly remember having to beg him to stop maneuvering so that I could engage ECM on incoming missles. To this day, when I see him, he'll still shout "I can outrun those missles!" and we'll both know what it means. Wish I had contributed to the kickstarter, but it wasn't on my radar.

I know it would be a bit inconvenient, and most likely totally unnecessary, but I think it would be awesome for the purpose of RP to have the expedition divided into several different wings. Each little mini taskforce could have one or more CMDRs assigned to play the role of defensive escort. This would also create a lot of extra roles/assingnments for any CMDRs who don't feel like they're currently contributing a whole lot to the expedition and would make them feel more involved.

I know it would probably take a lot more coordination and structure than it was worth, especially this late in the planning phase, but I just thought it was a cool idea .

Perhaps dividing into timezones? I'm GMT -6

Yep the idea of going anywhere unarmed makes me queasy :)
Even if only from an RP perspective, I like to think I'm ready for whatever. You never know, maybe there are some SDC gankers committed enough to make it all the way down there.

Won't be able to join any of the launch events as I'm just out past the NGC 7822 Nebula, so I'll see you later on, seems I have a bit of a head start. I was planning on checking out the Heart and Soul but we'll see.

I'm GMT btw
