The Cassiopeia Project

Hi CMDR,

I have been exploring the area extensively pre-engineers, and the whole area is fine with 36+ lyr.
There are a few spots that require 40-50 lyr jumps, in particular in the Formidine Rift "Ketchup" area.

With 42lyr and jumponium you can reach Rho Cas, which is one of the hardest place to reach that I know of.

IMO, with the possibility of ~45lyr ASP/X, the Anadonda usefulness is now very limited, considering his downsides*.

*crap SC agility, worse canopy view.

The Cas - A / Tycho is tangentially related (maybe) to the Formidine Rift mystery. There is an excellent summary
of the clues & mystery by CMDR Lucky Luke if you want to get involved in it, but this expedition is not dedicated to
solving it, just trying to find Cas - A and Tycho (since these are important historical astronomical objects, and seem
to be missing).

thanks for the reply

yeah I originally saved up for the conda, but now that I can afford it I cant find a role I really think id use it in. I prefer to fight in small, nimble ships. I don't trade that much, and I really like the ASP.

I was just playing with the idea of stuffing a fuel limpet/cargo rack into the ASP in case someone needs to barrow a few tons. it would require giving up the AFMU and adding a bit of weight, but from your post it looks like I can afford the lost range. So if I really wanted to play as the groups mini fuel rat I could still pull it off in the ASP. Do people often get stuck without fuel in the black? would my fuel limpets be worth the trouble? I'm trying to think of different ways I can contribute to the expedition.

I will give Lucky Luke's work a look over.

thanks

I was thinking around similar lines myself - taking fuel limpets (you can get the lightest controller as I think they only add range for drones and nothing else) and some limpets. Since Asp's max fuel per jump is around 5 tons iirc, a load of 8 limpets combined with some jumponium should be enough for one or two rescues, providing the rescued did not manage to stuck himself somewhere impossible.

There are two caveats though, you have to sacrifice shields, AFMU or buggy to fit it into AspX (and I love my buggy, I take it everywhere with me) and limpets can't be replenished by synthetizing. So I am still not sure whether or not to build my AspX as emergency deep space rescue.

So what do you think Commanders? Do you see some benefit for the expedition in taking a one shot rescue vessel along, or should we not bother?

I believe I'll go with you. Although I believe I won't be there for long.

Any dates for the beginning of the exploration?

More the merrier. Jaiotu doesn't have a final itinerary yet but 5th of November is his proposed date of departure (see his previous post)

Two of my real life brothers also play the game. I've convinced on to come. The other is still on the fence.
The one on the fence didn't have or plan on getting horizons any time soon. Since he doesn't need the SRV bay he'd be the perfect candidate for a rescue ship.

Now I just need to convince him to leave the bubble for two months.

Mission Update: 21 OCT 3302

Greetings fellow travelers!

First let me greet all the new Commanders signing on for the mission: Welcome Aboard! Please sign up via the Google spreadsheet located at the top of the OP.

This is the first time I've tried to organize anything on this level, so please bear with me and all the many mistakes that I'll probably be making along the way. That said, I'd like to take a moment to talk about the expedition launch event.

What I'd like to see is three separate launch events taking place on November 5th. Once launch event for each of the major galactic 'superpowers'. I'll be attending the Federation launch event from the Chi Orionis system. Chi Orionis is relatively close to Sol and does not require a permit to visit. I'm thinking that a good time for this event will be around 14:00 galactic time.

I'm going to leave the coordination of the Alliance and Empire launch events to Commanders affiliated with those two governments.

The main reason for hosting three events is: Power Play. Some of you might be affiliated with factions that are considered hostile in Federation space so asking you to come to Chi Orionis might be a little unfair. This expedition needs to be a joint effort that includes the entire galactic community. By hosting events in each of the major governments we are expressing a desire for peace between our peoples which is something desperately needed as galactic events seem to be spiraling out of control and leading our galaxy into conflict.

After the three launch events we will meet together at Obsidian Orbital in Maia to allow any stragglers to catch up. This meeting in Maia will take place on November 6th starting around 14:00 galactic time with a departure around 15:00.

After departing Maia expedition members will travel at their own pace to the Kappa Cassiopeia system where we will be meet again at 14:00 on 12 November. Personally, I plan to spend the week between Maia and Kappa Cassiopeia visiting the five 'main' stars in the Cassiopeia constellation. You are perfectly welcome to join me

After meeting together in Kappa Cassiopeia we will spend the following week in transit to AR Cassiopeia. I fully understand that this time table will be a little slow for some of our team members but I want to make sure that everyone has a chance to keep up. We'll meet in AR Cassiopeia at 14:00 on November 19th.

After November 19th things will get real. We will transit to the general area where we should expect to find Tycho's supernova. The objective is to collect data on as many candidate systems as we can chart. At the end of our mission we'll present this information (along with info regarding Cas A).

We will spend two weeks performing an intense search for Tycho's SNR. On December 3rd we will rendezvous at a time and place to be determined. Following the Rendezvous we will depart to search for Cassiopeia A. We'll rendezvous again on 10 December (time and place TBD). After this rendezvous we will begin the search for Cassiopeia A, again cataloging all candidate systems.

We will wrap things up on December 31st, meeting as an expeditionary unit one last time before ringing in the new year. I plan to write up the results of our expedition and submit them for publication to Galnet News.

As always: Keep flying Commanders!

Excellent update. Thanks for the ittinery.

As an unpledged independent pilot who dislikes all major powers I'll probably join you guys over at obsidian, though I'm open to attending a launch in Empire space as I do spend a lot of time there......

Thanks a lot for the plan. What will the meeting shortly before departure (on Nov 5th and 6th) roughly include because living in GMT +13:00 time zone, 14:00 game time is rather inconvenient needless to say. I am happy to join in with the departure if it is very important for the mission but I was wondering what would actually be done before departing. Thanks!

I have been informed by some interested parties that the suggested itinerary is ... too long.

I can respect that. The main purpose of extending the expedition until the end of December is to allow expedition members to come and go as they see fit. We won't be going as far as, say, Beagle Point so it should be easy for many of you to take part in the expedition and still have some time to return to the Bubble to participate in other activities and still have time to jump back out to meet up and participate in the search. There is no need for anyone to dedicate the entire next two months to this single endeavor.

If some of you would like to head out on the search prior to the official launch date of 5 November that would be fine. We could always use some scouts to help find resources and to locate good places for us to meet on December 3rd, 10th and 31st.

These meetings will be mainly 'ceremonial'. Just a chance to get together in game. The timing isn't all that perfect for me also. I work nights and weekends so I'll be popping in-game just before heading to bed. If you can't make it then you'll be missed but you really won't have missed anything :)

If someone can take the reigns for organizing a 'launch party' from Alliance or Imperial space then perhaps they can schedule those events for a time that will be conducive to you.

I'd be honoured to take up the Imperial part of the expedition's departure (despite it goes against my basic instinct to not volunteer for anything ever... You get that if you spend any length of time in any kind of armed force :D ).

I was considering Achenar as a departure system but it is permit locked so I get that if someone independent wanted to join us he might not have permit. So I would propose New Carthage instead. It's fairly close to Achenar, it has three big stations and there are some nice big well supplied systems around. We can set departure time to be convenient for most people possible although I am at gmt+1 so realistically I can be around at 8:00-23:00 gmt.

That sounds great! Can't wait to start the expedition! But I think it will be difficult for us Xbox-Players with these meetings. Any ideas how we could handle that?

Forgive me if it sound stupid, I have no experience with Xbox play (nor discord), but can't we set up a discord channel so Xbox players can get in touch with the rest of us? So even though Xbox players can only meet up with each other (I assume it works like that? No cross platform play? Which is shame if you ask me) we could still all communicate?

edit:
O_O turns out setting up Discord server is so easy even I can do it, who would have tough?

Just a novice question: I've seen some mention of those that have collected out-of-game data and shared via spreadsheet, etc. Is this considered to be part of the data collection process in this mission?

So I've registered on discord and have been poking around server set up. I am confident I can have Cas A expedition channel (or rather server as the discord calls it) set up in few days so if nobody else was gonna do it, I am at it (I even have a CasA picture and everything :) )

Btw I am sorry if it seems like I am posting here a lit but I do 24hour shifts and it has been slow day :D .

This might be a stupid question, but what exactly will we be looking for? Just a Neutron star that once scanned would be labeled Cas A or one of its name variants?

As a side note. I got my brother who won't buy Horizons to agree to come along as a rescue boat. I don't know if the Fuel Rats are planning on having any representatives join us on the expedition, but if not having one of our own guys set up for fuel transfers will save them from having to send someone out from the bubble. We'll have to set up a procedure for how to get in contact and call for help, but I think between the discord and this forum it should be pretty easy. He's usually on between 1 and 5 most weeknights, but he's home from 24:00 on, so I'm sure if he had to he could jump on and make a rescue. I'd recommend if any one gets stranded to write down the system their in and the distance and name of the nearest body. Then log out and try to set up the recue out of game. With all of our different schedules and time zones it might be some time IRL before someone can get to you. this is good advise if you ever use the Fuel Rats as well.

@RatPhink

I was thinking of setting up separate channel on Discord for Emergency dispatch but sadly, Discord do not support multiple channel presence yet (so you can't listen to general chatter and also be present in emergency channel). So what I intend to do instead is to set the Rescue user role. Anyone in channel can then use <@rescue> in chat and it will highlight his request and also anyone in <rescue> role can see filter for this type of mention.... It is not perfect but it is the best I can do with Discord right now. Also our esteemed expedition leader Jaiotu could post the list of those expedition members commander's names in FP who carry fuel transfer limpets for emergencies.

I too have decided to ditch AFMU for limpets (yea I like to live on the edge :) ) so it will be at lest two of us - and I am usually online at mornings and evenings so we would have different time frames covered as well.

Also, I have a question for you commanders, regarding expedition's discord channel. The way I am setting it up right now is <general channel> which is public, <expedition members only> which is intended to use if there is a problem with spam from random people in main channel and about four "private" rooms you can use if you intend to have some privacy with a group of other commanders (no question asked). Or would you prefer more dynamic set up where every expedition member have a power to create separate channel? Imho I would be in favour of fixed "rooms" but i am open to suggestions, the server is after all intended to provide comfort for all expedition members.

Rest easy even if there is nobody from the rats on the expedition or no one brings limpets we are more than ready to fly out from a bubble to save some poor explorer whos out of gas. We are everywhere!!! Fly safe.

Greatly appreciated. Having a Discord will be great and make it easier for players on XBox to stay in contact.

Well... I'm hoping that we ACTUALLY find Cassiopeia A or at least some in-game remnant that explains where it went. It is inconceivable to me that Frontier simply forgot to put it in the game. As NASA says on this website: "One of the most famous objects in the sky - the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant - will be on display like never before, thanks to NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory"

Something as famous as Cas A being left out of a game that sells itself as a 1:1 representation of the galaxy is simply baffling.
