The Dead End's Circumnavigation Expedition

That was a bit trial and error kind of meetup. :D
Next time, at the launch, we need to make sure that everyone is at the same instance before any shenanigans.
Also, keep friending cmdrs from the roster as it helps the instancing.

That fighter race was a bit of a disaster as the darkness came, i was completely lost. :D

But, we will do it better next time. ;)

Good meeting some of you cmdrs though. :)

Oh, and we really need that voice channel, without the mandatory push-to-talk function.

It was a real struggle today. Just like the good old Distant World days ;)
OK it wasn't always that bad. Weekends are usually tougher for meet-ups...
Also, it was the first time I've been to one. Not sure how things work with instancing and such. Didn't know getting into a wing would bring you to the same instance and such.

I turned up late and only saw a few of you guys hanging around. I noticed the weird lighting issue on MH though.

I will get friending people :)

It was a pleasure to meet all CMDRs that could make the instance today at Mitterand Hollow.

A number of valuable lessons was learned:

- Dark race courses is a no go.
- It is easy to get lost in a canyon, especially if it's dark.
- A 46 km distance from start to turn course is too long, 25 is max.
- Instancing is still hard and ctd still happens.
- A voice channel is essential for coordination (not push to talk!).
- Arrival times and races times should be at least 45mins apart.
- Mass jumps are still fun.
- Custom paintjob & kit looks awesome on a Federal Corvette.

Thanks to Qohen for his very funny joke "So you get lost in a canyon, and are about to set out on a circumnavigation?" (almost verbatim)

RL and that Murphy chap got in the way today, I've parked near the LZ coords for the night. I'll be on tomorrow, hope you had a good meet (instancing allowing lol).

Generally, proximity to the bubble + planet surface really worsen the instancing. With a bit of work and winging coordination it works decently enough, but that can take hours to setup... Better to do from a bit farther and in space.

And all the wing invite and then disconnect and such, I'm still learning those things. I haven't used it much at all.

Also, I need to figure out how my headset works.

Perhaps we all park our ships and try to get a chat going with everyone (maybe the most colorful and pretties ship can mark the spot? :D)

I should've tried doing it on my own first just to get a feel where it was going. I was lost too because of the darkness. It was all good for 10 seconds, and then all dark grey, and of course seconds after a boost... LOL!

I wish FDev could provide with some mechanics where we could place racing beacons along the track. Like the sticks in slalom.

But, we will do it better next time. ;)
Absolutely. It's a new thing for several players too, I think, so it's a practice thing.

Likewise. I had your streaming on all the time. It was the weirdest thing with your SLF. What the heck? Maybe the door got stuck because of all the rust? xD

I'm not even sure what the push-to-talk is. I have to figre my headset out.

Now, I won't be able to play or meet for 10 days, but after that, how about having another meetup and try the races again? I wouldn't mind. Now I know a bit more what to expect.

It can be done, when we're a bit more experienced. As a first race for beginners (like me), it was little too much to figure out. But I like the idea of that place for a race. So again? Some day?

- It is easy to get lost in a canyon, especially if it's dark.
- A 46 km distance from start to turn course is too long, 25 is max.
Yeah. I never saw you. Somehow it has to be so we can see the turn-around. Or if there's a place with natural markers that's easy to recognize?

- Instancing is still hard and ctd still happens.
Yeah. it is. I didn't know you have to get into a wing to see the instance? Am I correct that's how it works?

- A voice channel is essential for coordination (not push to talk!).
What's this push-to-talk? That's the in game voice channel?

- Arrival times and races times should be at least 45mins apart.
And have everyone park first, and get a mass chat. Then all friendling is done and you can explain the rules of the race and such. A bit of a sit-down.

- Mass jumps are still fun.
I missed it because of the dumb connectivity. :/

- Custom paintjob & kit looks awesome on a Federal Corvette.
YES!!! I won the most obnoxious look award! Yay!!!

Next time, I could be the flag pole... unless we're on the expedition. No, I'm NOT taking the corvette on the DECE! :D (unless Fdev decides to add a super FSD to it)

ROFL

Well, we're big picture guys/gals. We get lost in details, but can deal with the bigger picture, ya know.

Does the location in real life matter? Like I'm in west coast USA, and others are in Europe and such.

Han, we were discussing in Discords voice channel and Fleetcomm apparently has this mandatory push-to-talk function which is quite annoying.
Macros has asked if we can have our own voice channel in the Discord and hopefully, with voice activation rather than with the hideous push-to-talk.

ok.

Well, with that, I'm heading out. Going on a 10 day vacation and probably won't connect again until back. I will however work on the "commander's log" and post them when done.

Han Zulu out.

Well, that was a waste of time :(

Missed the meetup completely :(
Totally forgot what time the meet was at, rushed out of Jameson, got stuck in the slot (again), got killed by station defence's (again). So, 10 million rebuy and a dead copilot (sorry Lori (again)). Got stuck a second time but managed to wriggle free, YAY! and off we go to Mitterand Hollow. All I can say is It is the first and last time I will ever visit. Tried catching it, nope. Tried coming in from an angle, nope, nope and nope. Tried a head-on approach, yup, that works, too close and a drop from supercruise later and I'm hurtling into the surface, gentle bounce and I'm there! Hull down to 56% but I made it only to find I'm alone as usual :(

That is one weird moon and the planet flying around is completely disorientating.

Anyway, limped back to Jameson, replaced Lori with new doomed flunkie and ready for 2.4 and the start of a new adventure.

Sorry I missed you all.

Kinda relieved that it just wasn't me having issues. That was my first gathering as well, had no idea meeting up would be so hard. It's no wonder I haven't seen anyone else while I play. I did enjoy flying the T9 through the canyon though. Got to see a Cutter in VR from the outside, that was pretty cool. Hate I missed the "mass" jump. I am going to start sending friend request out this afternoon, so be ready :p

So after failing to really join the party this morning due to matchmaking issues (solo worked fine but isn't very helpful :/), I headed off to try some of the 'tests'.
Scooping - check, no worries, wondering what I missed
Skardee - check. No heat sinks, all going well until we start scooping. 150ish% heat and Thundersruck is threatening to become screaming fireball....but we punch through. Some components fried (docking computer [yes...lazy], cargo hatch but the big tickets are in the 80's and PP & hull at 100%. AFMU sorts the rest.
Departure....interesting :/ getting away is simple enough but melting whilst trying to break free of the gravity well is not. Call it low 90's on the damage scale.
Attempt 2; bought a heat sink launcher at the local station, and powered everything off I didn't need. 130ish heat and mid-90's damage and I didn't use the heat sink. Take off....climbed to 100km before hitting cruise and took only small damage before hitting the sink to see how they work.

Achenar; landing was ok. I hit FA off and was a bit slow to hit it on again and the ground is approaching quick fast...but we got 4km..3...2...1....reckon I need another 1 to 1.5...thanks heaven for boost. so 300m high we come to stop again, switch on the shields ( still off from Skardee..doh) and double tap FA off and we're about 5m off off the ground. Next tap lands..no worries...check!
Departure, hit the vertical thrusters to get around 200m high, and then hit the gas and pitch.......and bounce with 35% hull remaining. So...what's the trick here? Just keep vertical thrusting until main thrusters have fully engaged or just keep going until you hit a few kms?

Hi Cmdr's,

Really enjoyed the meet earlier, no instancing problems for me at all, and am sorry to hear that wasn't the case for many of you.
Was nice to see all those that did manage to make it. I had been parked up there for a few hours beforehand, and lost 3 SLF's running the canyon course, and another during the race itself lol, the light/dark was the kicker there for me, stood on the wingtip, half way through a bend on full boost, and the lights go out lol, great fun.

Safe travels Cmdr's o7

Sorry about your crewmember, CMDR. Tip when getting stuck in the access corridor: FA-Off, full throttle out. I suspect you're getting stuck because you're flying too slow when leaving. Again, this is just a guess.

Whoo-hooo - sign me up. Still deciding....Aquarius C, my Exploraconda or a brand spanking new exploration paint job Beluga!

Welcome aboard, CMDR!

Friends definitely helps the instancing.

When leaving high g planets, I keep vertical to full, go full throttle forward while turning to 90 deg. and do not release vertical until I've climbed to a safe altitude. Then I go afk to change my pants.

Doing a 90º departure is a big no-no in high G planets. Gravity is so strong that will make you go backwards until you crash. The trick is to fly with less than 25º (I think it was 25) with flight assist on. It takes a while, but you will gain altitude steadily.

The same can be said to landing. If you keep your angle low you can descend safely, but you need patience.

Aaah....will try that. I tried to do what Macros described but didn't hold down the vertical thrusters . Talking of going backwards, I forgot to mention that. After I climbed for a bit feeling a tad glum, I hit the SC button....except I didn't, and hit the reverse thrusters instead (buttons are next to each other). Took me maybe 15 seconds to work out what was going on and why and all boost seemed to do is stop me falling as fast....and I only get one boost every 8 secs or so. Thought I was a gonna for sure. Fun time

I now have a dilemma

I played around with a Dolphin and found it is almost as fast as my Clipper [380m/s plays 425m/s, 532 boost v 538] and has as good/better turning, and adds 5ly getting into low 40's [41.43/43.63 according to 'panel 4']. aaaand....seems to handle Skardee heat better.

Downside is it is much slower to scoop and tends to overheat as a result of me getting impatient....but that's a bubble thing, and I'm not loving it as much as the Clipper. But.....40's [obviously the passenger suite got ripped out]. Why oh why did I go an play[blah]
