PvP The Deadliest Ganker Tactic - The "Double Yo-Yo"

I’m just saying regular XBOX controller will be severely limiting. All the discussion around C3 vs C4 is addressing the symptom, not the cause. Know what I mean?

OP is on Xbox where one might assume most of the field is also using a controller.

Putting a turret is another matter entirely.
It doesn't make sense using a controller either.

That will do it. Do you have the Elite controller? You can button map all kinds of things (like lateral thrusters!) and get very good results. 'Sniper sticks' and joystick curve adjustments can get you very accurate shooting. Probably not as good as keyboard and mouse, but hey there it is.

In fact, I was on XBOX for a long time before switching to PC. Still use the controller. :)
Phisto,

You just posted the most useful information (for me) on this entire thread.

I appreciate that you understand the limitations the XBox controller has (especially the lateral thruster implementation which is awful). Very few buttons, tiny, over-reactive joysticks, I've been a sloppy pilot while using it and had to engineer ships around its limitations. I recently counted how many button clicks it took to do something, 6. In a fight, I'm at a disadvantage in many ways, so I engineered my ships around the limitations. Turreted lasers have worked well for me in PvE. I've bounty hunted and destroyed over 23,000 ships, and lost one, an Eagle. I can take on any wing in PvE; no problem.

I know the PvP environment is different, especially after all the comments made on this thread, and I may need to do some re-engineering on some ships, but I've got to solve my controller problem first.

I never heard of an Elite Controller for an XBox. You still using it on a PC is quite a recommendation. I'd heard from someone that XBox controller would work on a PC...

A few weeks ago, I purchased a Thrustmaster HOTAS on someone's recommendation, a very nice piece of equipment. I tried it one night; I think it's going to be awesome, especially with the ability to use the stick to pilot precisely, the button placement, and the ability to program upwards of 14 different button sequences that will be activated by no more than 2 button clicks. But all my muscle memory training for the last 2.5 years has been for the stock XBox controller, so I put the HOTAS away for a while. I'm going to get it back out soon and train myself to use it. It will take a while in SOLO mode to adapt to it.

If the HOTAS does not work out, I will buy an XBox Elite Controller. I may even buy one before my training on the HOTAS. Your description is intriguing.

Bob Lighthouse,

It was never my intention with my original post to ask for advice on my ships' configurations. I simply posted an incident that happened to me, as a warning to others, and to ask if anyone else had encountered anything like it. That was it.

Since my OP, other commanders have peppered me with questions. I've responded. And then you and your buddy showed up, to jeer and denigrate me on a personal level. I've reported both of you for it. I don't think this forum tolerates bullies.

I know you've made it your personal mission in life to force me use a Class 4 Pulse Laser on a Size 4 hardpoint on an FDL, and to continue to publicly insult me if I don't.

I'm not going to do it. Get used to it.

To the rest of the commanders who posted on this thread, I appreciate all of your posts, especially those that volunteered their time and energy, and ideas to enhance my ship builds for PvP. This statement includes those that disagreed with me. I like a good, honest debate; it gets to the truth of things.

I've written much more than I wanted to on this thread. It's seriously detracted from my game play time which is limited by the demands of my career. So, this is my last post on this thread.

I hope to encounter most of you in the black. o7

Good luck, OP! I think the HOTAS or XBOX Elite Controller will suit you and really open up the game for you. It did for me!

EDIT: Quick side note: the 'Elite' in the controller name doesn't refer to our beloved game. Just marketing speak for 'super kewl!!' :)

Thanks to all of you for posting your remarks, observations, and experiences. I will adjust my PvP play accordingly.

In the incident I related, I had no idea of the experience level of my 2 opponents. They were really good, very fast, faster than I could respond, even with my heavily engineered FDL and Corvette (all components A rated, Grade 5+ engineered). Both of my ships have good weapon loadouts, tough hulls and shields, and SCBs. I don't think in either interdiction I ever got a lock and fired a shot. They were that fast. Their tactics were excellent, almost certainly rehearsed many times.

In the last 2.5 years, I've lost about 30+ ships to gankers. I have never encountered any gankers as good as these 2 pilots were.

I bet those 2 guys have destroyed thousands of ships. They appeared to be very practiced. It's probably all they do. Plus, I was using an XBox 1 controller; I'm pretty sure they were using HOTAS. Everything they did was executed quickly and efficiently with very precise aiming of their weapons. An XBox 1 controller is no match for a properly setup HOTAS in the hands of an experienced pilot.

I'm not exactly an inexperienced pilot. I'm ranked Triple Elite. I have over 23,000 kills bounty hunting; I've lost one ship, an Eagle. I've taken on 3 Elite Anacondas in a wing using just a Vulture with 2 beam lasers and destroyed all 3 of the Anacondas. But I don't have much PvP experience. I'd like to get more of it.

I'd like to get as good as the gankers and take them on, but I think to be that good, I'd have to become a ganker myself and practice destroying other ships. I think that's all they do. Me, I'm like most ED players: I have a small fleet of ships that I use to do many things. I don't spend all my time practicing fast, efficient murders.

I really appreciate all of your posts. Hope to see you in the black.

Goes to show just how effective cooperative tactics/wing-mates can be . . .

LOL...
First of all I suggested a beam, just to show you how poor of a choice you were making, and how much energy overhead you had.

I don't care what you do.
I am just pointing out the absurdity of your current choice, and how you do not seem open to suggestions like you claimed.

No matter what controller you use, it's a terrible choice.

Perhaps some other Cmdr can benefit from your thread, even if you can't.

LOL, blame it on the controller!

"It's not the arrow."

I'm just trying to figure out who your buddy was.

Did you get blocked?

LOL

Funny if so, him being open to suggestions and all...

I don't know if he blocked me or not, but if he was talking about reporting me for some gentle ribbing then I guess my response would be that I wished I'd actually gone after him for reals. Of all the forum/ingame playstyles, the playstyle of "overly sensitive oh so thinned skin professional victim" is the one I detest above all others.

But Jason, he's gotten to where he is today using a c3 turret.

Never mind that place he's gotten to is getting blown up in seconds.

Should I break it to him that TLB actually just got nerfed?

I’ve never used the PS4 controller so I can’t comment. Got lots of experience with the default controller and the Elite controller. Most folks on XBOX use the Elite one. The performance advantage is significant!

In any case, he’ll be better served once he gets a more flexible controller.

Where do you get "most" from?

I suspect "thin air".

I’m still close with everyone in Newton’s Fusiliers. I can’t think of anyone good using the default controller. I can ask them if you want?

I went ahead and asked. Turns out a couple of the best guys on XBOX use stock so that was surprising. Seems though that the Elite controller does provide a slight edge and most people learn on stock and then upgrade if they get the taste for it.

In any case, yeah his outfitting choices are poor but I can understand why he made them. Fingers crossed a more enjoyable control scheme makes it all more fun (and more likely he whips out that mighty PA).

I appreciate the honesty, and why you'd ever try to tacitly approve that weapon choice will forever remain a mystery to me.

It's totally absurd.
