The Difference Between PvP and "Griefing"

There's only one person I've ever blocked and that was because he threatened to stab me in real life. But it's nice to see that some people have their priorities in order when it comes to blocking others.

Ah perfect. I was hoping for this response. Tell that to the next armchair psychologist that tells me blowing someone up in this game is not morally acceptable and that I should "seek help".

Ya'll like to have your cake and eat it too. Very biased indeed.

Well done on your triumphant gotcha moment, other than Stealthie not having said any of those things of course.

I could be wrong (well I usually am ...) but in the run up to a release there is a sudden proliferation in these threads. Armchair behavioural psychologists on one side armed with links to Wiki dissertations and Youtube lectures. Dudebros on the other side armed with their crybaby memes and strangling all resistance in their mutual-repping brohug.

And then the reapers arrive and wipe everything out ready for the next cycle.

I prefer reading dissertations and lectures than some of the garbage memes that this forum generates, like that "chuckles in the background" guy, really hate him.

...

Oh wait .-.

I said it before, and I'll say it again - Griefing is defined best in the same way as Pornography: "I can't tell you what it is, but I know it when I see it."

It is subjective and open to interpretation. What might be "normal gameplay" - attacking other player, acts of piracy, blockading a station, even loading up all the landing pads could be griefing under the right circumstances.

Player A is flying back to the bubble after a trip to and back from Sat A. He is flying an Exploration kitted AspX. The AspX is all he has. BOOM! He's interdicted by a wing of 3 FDLs and given a new hole in his bottom and a rebuy. Q: Do you think he is happy?

Player B is flying his new trade hauler. He has loaded it up with a few tons of cargo and the scratchings of a rebuy left. BOOM! Hes interdicted by an Anaconda and sent to the rebuy screen. Q: Do you think he is happy?

Player C has just logged in after completing the training missions and undocks and tenderly makes his way out of the station and goes to supercruise to find the nav point he read about. BOOM! He's interdcted and killed by some chap in a FAS who send him a message 'Git Gud'! Q: Do you think he is happy?

All those actions are clinically defined as Sociopathic behaviour. Fact. look it up. Griefing would be a mild explanation for it..

Granted.

Thats the general problem with griefing. Its absolute subjective! NO RULE TO THAT.

My 2 cents on definitions. Note: just my two cents on what this terms mean for me and my usage of them (generally speaking), nothing here is official.

PvP: any player versus player activity. Blanket term. Piracy, griefing, and duels are all subsets of this term.

Piracy: PvP activity with the intent to acquire cargo from another vessel. Any ship destruction is usually an undesired outcome for BOTH parties. (I personally have no problems with this).

Duels: PvP activity between two combatants, or approximately equal wings of combatants. Could go to ship destruction, or simply significant hull damage depending on the terms. Both parties would have arranged this in some form or another. (Again, no issues from me)

PvP Bounty Hunting: Claiming a bounty from a wanted player. As it stands, this is a joke at best, but still included.

Powerplay: PvP activity against a HOSTILE Powerplay member. This is not arranged, and the potential for this is generally understood by most Powerplay users. Any encounters are spontaneous and always result in ship destruction for at least one of the parties involved. (No issues from me, but poweplay is a tad dead)

Griefing: PvP activity against other players with the intent to have fun at their expense. This includes, but is not limited to: Murder-hoboing, noob-killing, ganking, destruction of exploration ships, station camping, destruction of trade ships without any attempt to pirate via comms or targeting of cargo hatch, Multi-crew trolling, and the destruction of random ships. Popular excuses given: "emergent content," "lulz," Role play, and other miscellaneous "reasons." As anyone can tell, I DO have an issue with this.

Safe to say. All anyone is asking for is context.

For example. Remember the salmoe event where people could pick fight against or for salmoe. Something as simple as that could be added for Imperial and feds at a CG. Which side are you fighting for. Boom. Context. Powerplay factions, pertaining to open only. BOOM context.

I legitimately feel "people get blown up for no reason" is due to lack of context. Im not going to write a book to someone before I kill them. Like cmon.

I disagree. Griefing is specific, the effects are subjective. Griefing is any action with the intent of ruining fun for someone else. HOW that is accomplished is subjective, yes. The intent of griefing is like war. It never changes.

Well to be fair this has lasted longer than I thought it would, what with the Armodgeddon of similar threads going on all around it. Nothing to add other than to acknowledge how brimming over with wrongability my earlier prediction was. As you were...

PVP needs context and a reference to and from the game. There is no way denying this fundamental law.
But there is no sure way, beside EXPLOITS, like Itchy Nipples was used to pull over, to tell!
