The Division, a new game from the T. Clancy universe.

I'm sure some if not most of you have seen the ads ramping up for this game since it drops next week.

Will anyone here be partaking? I pre-ordered the gold edition through Amazon for the prime $20 off discount.

Unlike our beloved ED, this game does have separate PvE and PvP zones. :p No worries there.

More Zombies. There is no original thought any more.

Wow.. So.. Did you watch either of those videos? I only ask because there are definitely not any zombies at all in this game.
I mean, c'mon, putting some effort into your posting is generally an accepted thing around these parts.

Thanks, no I watched the TV add. Sorry about that.

I'll be giving this one a miss, just another shoot and loot IMO, fallout DLC is starting this month so can hold on for that, ghost recon wildlands is more my sort of TC game, would like to see more of that

Tried beta, wasn't too impressed, came off as generic hub shooter, loot grinder like destiny/borderlands and such, but with story feeling even more flat, then destiny.
Had potential especially if they had gone after a much more open situation and not using hubs.

Sounds impressive. I like the idea of the dark zone - the PvP enabled area being a geographical area of the world, with better loot.

One small thing that annoys me about games like this - all the HUD items hovering over players heads with weapon/health/level/aggro/stealth indicators etc... yeeeesh.

I really enjoyed PvP in the beta, and exploring the world generally. Wasn't so keen on the 'bullet sponge' enemies and some of the RPG frippery. But seemed solid, and hopefully it will tide me over till E: D 2.1 hits.

Not really exited about this one. Bullet sponge enemies that can take multiple head shots from the AK works for SF games, not when the bad guys are wearing a hoodie. Also its a game about finding loot - what is the point if the loot is boring (oh another grip for my rifle that will give me 0,001% more stability. I will pass.

As exciting as Moving Cargo from A to B......

Best played with friends and like all games its about moderation.

Elite, couple of hours a week trading / bounty hunting / CG.
LOTRO - Dailies ( yes more grind for loot ).
The Division - run around kill for loot and great fun in a group.

I would absolutely kill for a game featuring The Division's engine, map scope, level of detail, base building and urban setting, Arma 3's combat mechanics and S.T.A.L.K.E.R's dark setting, with an active squad/tribe based A-life/dynamic campaign/territory acquisition system driving combat.
.
Every Ubisoft game I play comes soooooo close to nailing the open world setting, but is then let down by the repetitive mission structures, and, in the Division's case, poor AI/bullet sponge enemies. Exploring the city, soaking in the post-apocalypse atmosphere and piecing together clues is incredibly fun though.
.
And the Dark Zone is a lot of fun - currently replacing Survarium as my 'FPSRPG' shooter of choice'. :)
.
*Edit - 'They've got Alex!!!' is going to be this year's 'I took an arrow to the knee' isn't it? And the gung-ho 'this is why we're doing this, we're gonna' take back our city' and the JTF guys sucking up to you all the time is starting to grate a bit...

Ubisoft put a review embargo on this game until AFTER release. After playing it the reason becomes clear.

Played it. Made sure I didn't put in more than two hours before stopping and getting a refund from Steam.

My god this game is the worst AAA game I've played. No, not hyperbole or exaggeration. I genuinely mean it. It wasn't broken like AC:Unity or Watch_Dogs, or trying to do something good but being flawed in its execution like GTA Online. No, this game does exactly what it sets out to do. The problem is that it is utterly bland and doesn't actually set out to do anything ambitious at all.

You basically shoot, collect, level up and pimp your pack of goodies.

Who do you shoot? The same NPCs, over and over and over. They dress the same, they attack more or less the same (shooting/running at you with a knife), and they die the same. The only variation is how many bullets they require before going down. Ohhh - forget headshots or going for vulnerabilities, there are none.

What do you level up? Abilities that, bizarrely, you can swap around as you play. Meaning that the entire point of levelling (building a unique character) is completely lost on this game. Maybe I was mistaken about how this works? I didn't really play it long enough to advance anywhere.

What bag of goodies? Basically your gun. So you can shoot stronger/more bullets. Maybe get a silencer or a scope - go wild with it!

All this is accomplished by visiting certain NPCs and getting missions from them, which are generic "Go to X and clear out the baddies" or "Go to Y and gather the stuff".

Functionally the game is almost EXACTLY like Borderlands, only without the charm, colour, humour, or all around whackiness of Borderlands. This game takes itself way too seriously. Borderlands had procedurally generated loot that meant you could get all kinds of fun weapons, as well as a huge variety of foes to use those weapons on, but had static missions. The Division has (I think) procedurally generated missions, but the guns you get are generic bullet pumps.

Try it if you want but I would keep well away.

Strangely enough, both of these sentences apply (with some latitude) to Elite: Dangerous too. (Just messin'... ;) )

Oh that reminds me of a space game I've been playing on and off.... ;)

On topic.

Played The Division beta, Wasn't impressed as it was just another mediocre shooter. Won't buy.
I'm sure it's well made and I really liked how dirty and dangerous everything felt, I loved the design and the graphics as well as the details with body bags laying around.
But with a totally unintuitive and uninspiring game play, it was fun only for 30 minutes.

It's a lot better than I thought it would be. Plenty of content, looks beautiful, plays nicely and the multiplayer is seamless. Ask for little else above what's advertised personally.

Hehe on my first night, I got stuck in a room right at the start with lots and lots of other players, where you have to get to a desk and register your character. After 15 minutes of waiting in a queue and failing. I quit the game. Haven't played since. Does look fantastic though.

They've patched out the need to go to the laptap due to the lines, which was hilarious (I'm glad I got in before the majority of NA players were able to).

As far as bullet sponges go, those of you who took to the beta or only played two hours worth of the game didn't really experience anything. The beta is scores different from the live release in terms of how the enemies work and how the missions and other areas are lain out. Two hours of regular game time is enough to get to level 5 or 6 and you might be able to traverse some of Manhattan, but you definitely don't get into the dark zone and survive at that level and you have very little player interaction. At the same time, it's not a ground breaking game and the engine is absolutely gorgeous, why does every new game need to be something groundbreaking or need to be shooting for some obscure wicket to be considered good? Every shooter game in the last 10 years has been a variation of the same tired model and the same goes for every RPG. Elite definitely isn't anything new in regards to gameplay or style, it's just an old concept in a shiney new wrapper. Writing something off because it's not ground breaking or not trying to be something stupid huge with it's design is asinine.

For those of you complaining about tired mission design, repetitive missions and a lack of story.. You're uh.. you're posting on the Elite Dangerous forum. C'mon now.

I think their biggest problem (The Division) is that players expect a certain kind of realism based off of the visuals of the game. A realism that translates into low TTK for mobs and bosses because of such. While the realism behind the gunplay definitely takes a back seat to the RPG element of the game (Maybe back of the bus is a more apt phrase) that's not a game killing feature, not in the slightest and the bosses are way less bullet spongey than those featured in Destiny. Hell, two of us were able to clear the Riker boss encounter in less than 3 minutes. Show me a Destiny boss that dies in less than 3 minutes without a gimmick trick, the players being a dozen levels higher or the use of ballerhorn (because there's no weapon clearly deserving of ballerhorn status in The Division).

As for the rest of the comparisons, I say to each their own. Borderlands died for me as a game before I even got to the vault in the first game and I've barely touched the other two for more than an hour or so at best because they're just flat out boring for me.

Give it a chance next time rather than going into it with preconceived notions. That's all I ask.

I've dumped 21 hours into the game so far and it's all been pretty fun (except for the part where I began backtracking to finish off encounters/side missions). I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I am and that's been the best part. It's a game that I didn't get my hopes up for (like SC) that has delivered on it's basic features as promised and done so in an enjoyable way.

Ive seen posts where people compare the game with Diablo, based on the loot collecting and enemies.

Does it have that addictive quality to it?

I really enjoyed Diablo and I do like games that have an emphasis on loot, I also really liked the variance in enemies (elites, champions etc).
