The Division, a new game from the T. Clancy universe.

That's one magazine that has gone bat crazy with its reviews in recent years. I pay them no mind in general these days. There are points he makes that I could agree with but he's being harsh for harsh sake with a lot of them. Sometimes you have accept that in a game like this some things can't be developed perfectly. The main example being the bullet sponge enemies. It's an rpg this sort of thing comes with the territory! And frankly you can switch that rational part of your brain off or you can't. I personally think ANY gamer should be able to do this, we all live in a bloody fantasy world when we play 95% of the games out there.

This game isn't perfect but it IS a solid 80-85 in any gamers book depending on your preferences in general. It's had a brilliant sales showing and I hope that it means Ubi will invest more into content and longevity as well as improving the things that the game is weak on.

"Ludo-cognitive dissonance" is how a colleague described it. I can accept bullet sponge monsters and levels (why is that Nekker Lvl4 and that one 33?) in The Witcher 3, I can accept spaceships with 3km range peashooters in Elite, I have trouble accepting boss enemies taking 300 7.62 rounds to the body in The Division just because... well... guns + 'realistic' setting. (to be fair, using a marksman rifle drops anything this side of a boss guy in 2 hits or less). If the game had ARMA's ballistics model, and a skill-based approach to RPG, I'd proclaim it GoTY, but... Anyway, still having more fun with The Division than I've had with Elite in months (sorry Frontier, their grinding has a pretty city as a backdrop, and better exploration. :) )

Entirely agree with your last comment there Lobs. I reinstalled ED last night after being away for a 6 six months or so. Just no enthusiasm for playing it after getting back in and doing a few things. On the other hand Im really enjoying Division. Level 28 now and really enjoying the multiplayer side in the dark zone.

Well, a bit of thread Necromancy to say that I'm still coming back to the Division when I get bored of Elite. There seems to be a nice flow of additional things to do, even in single player (as long as you don't mind variants of 'shooting' :D) and there's a nice contrast between the above-ground openness, and the confines of the underground now. Also for some reason, random crafting in The Division feels a lot better than E: D - probably because you can at least respec certain aspects.

Still keep on getting utterly melted by rogue groups in the Dark Zone though...
