The Elite Community(In My Experience)

Actually, one of the most toxic communities I've experienced in recent years is the Amiga community. People literally sue each other in that community! And they generally are older and so you'd assume they'd be more mature and chilled!
Are you talking the 'real' Amiga community, or the pretenders who have latched on? ;)

This comes down to perspective.

So there are a few ways to make new "friends" here... people not understanding the game, think they have a found "obvious" game breaking bad design, and then post a thread about how could FDev even create something like this, and when people start replying that this is not how it actually is, or trying to explain what the hurt points is and what can be done to overcome them, the OP goes ballistic and digs in their heels and simply accuse everyone for being mean, not understanding, etc, etc. And that can quickly make the most patient forum members to have a bad day eventually.

Sometimes people are just having a bad day, and have got in trouble again over one of the lacklustre design and are posting a venting thread, and instead getting some validation that this design is far from optimal, the nice forum people insists of trying to help and give advice, which in a normal thread would have a been much appreciated, but now they want acknowledge about their issue, and they do not want someone telling them how to solve the underlying problem... something like this: It's Not About The Nail

And then we have the battle trench... PvP vs PvE... just like in most other games, that have both PvE and PvP options, here Elite it is a bit different than most other games, in how players have several ways of opting out of PvP even when they play in Open. And if we boil it down, it usually comes to a few things like this:
  • PvP is optional by design, and thus we have several options for players not wanting to engage in PvP to avoid PvP. None of the big game elements of the game is designed around PvP mechanics, we can engage in PvP when we are doing just about anything, but if we want to engage in specific things, like BGS, PvP activities is often not the best option to compete in those mechanics, this of course is an issue for those players who want to have a more involved PvP experience and would like to have mandatory PvP options available.
  • The game world is huge and thus the outside some hotspots it is rare to encounter other players that are "hostile". And many seems just to want to fly around with other players without blowing them up.

So this game design caters to many different players and their play style, and thus many different opinions. So whenever someone is going to want to change this diverse setup, by forcing their preferred way of playing onto other players, this of course is going to create a much more heated debate.

Its one reason i've pushed back at those who wanted to make the game have more competitive elements and make PvP more required or open prefferable.

My experience is that the more competitive the game environment the more toxic it is. Its not PvP exactly, even PvE games with competitive elements (eg: leaderboards) can also get quite toxic.

And i agree, compared to many communities out there, this one is very mild on the toxicity front.

I like to fly high on Onionhead and Gerasian Gueuze beer trying not to crash into things. Then again I only play in Solo so I don't cause harm to others. Well, that coupled with the fact that my insurance company only covers my claims in Solo, better premiums and all that. I'm in a squad but they all seem to off playing other games. Ah well.

As for the community here, it seems pretty chill unless it comes to expressing criticism on Devs and their direction. I'm 50, and eleven and a half twelfths.
