The Elite Community(In My Experience)

If it was a "**you!" Or "**off!", then yes I totally agree just frustrated people venting.
And stalking people like that is out of the world toxic.

But those are messages are definitely real toxic they are absolutely disgusting. Even if people are blowing up right and left. Those messages should never have been sent under any circumstance.

Edit:
What makes me even more disgusted, is that those messages were highly likely been sent by adults. like atual grown ups that sent those messages because something went wrong in a videogame......
Ideally, yes. But we are talking about humans, and we should not be naive about their nature. They are simply not as civilized and dignified as us apes. :)

Unacceptable for sure. But I'd really recommend caution when judging a person based on one (outrageous) rant. Even these kinds of unacceptable rants.

I wouldn't judge the person, but judge the behaviour.
People say a lot of stupid stuff on the Internet. Stuff they'd never say to your face.

There was a young girl (!) at Gamescom once who lost to me in a War Thunder match and she calmly looked at me and told me she wished I'd die of cancer. So I stood up and asked her, what she'd just said. And she repeated it as if it wasn't a big deal, but slowly realized that for me it was a big deal.

She explained to me that it was something people say at her school, it's nothing serious. I explained to her what it felt like to watch my grandma actually die of cancer, including the last hours where her lungs slowly filled with water internally. That's what you wish happens to me?
We came to an agreement that maybe it's not cool to say something like that, but that she didn't really mean for me to die in a horrible horrible way.
Then we both went our merry ways.

Today it's Covid. Same stupidity.

Now, in a game we can only report people, we can't talk to them directly eye to eye. But I think we should report them, it's simply a step to help them improve. ;)

Believe me I really hope, that the behaviour of those people does not reflect on how they act in the real world.

But it is still extremely disgusting. And if this tops the things I have seen in league of legends, well that says something...

I just really hope that Fdev maintains a zero tolerance policy against such behaviour and that it is dealt with swiftly.

Its not just generational, its also cultural. In the Netherlands cursing with diseases/illnesses is tradition. There is an excellent wiki page about 'Dutch profanity' (which I wont link to but is easy to find). Cancer is popular, but as it is a very old tradition we also use (for us) old-timey things like the plague, tuberculosis, typhoid, cholera and so on. We use it to indicate annoyance ("Pff, get cancer mate") but also use it against inanimate objects. You walk into a door? Thats some typhoid-door right there! Hit your thumb with a hammer? Tuberculosis! A bully is called a plague-head. You can also opt for the generic "Get the disease!", and leave it to the listener to pick whatever disease they feel is appropriate in the context. To some locals and most foreigners, this is pretty abhorrent behavior. But if it is how you grew up, it kinda loses its edge completely.

Personally I like to live my life Michael Massi-style: life is more fun when you dont take everything too literal. :p

Might be partly cultural. The first time I heard the cancer thing was from the son of an US friend of mine. Wasn't amused then either.
Where I grew up - both in Germany and in South Africa - that would have gotten me such a beating. I'd never even think of saying something like that.
(Though both countries also have their disease related curses...)

Of course now I live in Belgium, Vlaams part, and I never heard that here either... Should ask some colleagues. :)

Good to know - and very interesting. My son is learning Dutch and I am looking forward to the surprises I will learn from him in the future.

However, you should be aware that without such a friendly explanation - especially in an international forum - most people have little chance of understanding the real spirit behind such a statement. I am also not sure that everyone who wishes cancer on me is Dutch! At least I will ask from now on. Otherwise (as always): it's all a matter of context! ;)

Where we at it... Germans tend to take everything very literally. Just so you know... 😬
Indeed. Had it been an adult said that to me, I might have felt compelled to show him the error of his ways in a more direct, one might say forceful manner.

A child of course... well... But good to know about the Dutch thing. ;)

I'd say Elite is highly competitive: Community Goals and their rankings and rewards, BGS, Powerplay, Squadron Ranking, explo tagging, direct pvp combat.

It's just some people don't want to be competitive ;)
That's not really competitive. Competitive is when you and I are both trapped in a wood and the only edible thing there is blueberries.
We might employ different strategies, but sooner or later the berries will become scarce and we'll start to fight over them.

Elite is more like we have all the berries in the world and then some. And every other week Mama Oakley's Fine Bakery makes a little competition who makes the best pie. Some join, some don't, and not so many care about the little but lovingly made medals Mama Oakley gives to the winners.
Because they aren't very meaningful in the grand scheme of things. Just a nice to have.

I hate blueberries but I love raw meat.

Being well into my 40's I find it hard to fathom how toxic some of these younger folks can be to one another. I fell into quite a few gaming communities so toxic that I became the type to stick to solo gaming strictly for the sake of my sanity.
I have been playing ED since 2018 and have encountered very little of that behavior on the part of this community. I attribute that to the player base for this game being older, more chill...way more helpful to newbs than you find almost anywhere else.
Honestly, that's why I stick around.

...Thank you.

Thank you for not being toxic. Thank you for being overall a kind and courteous community of people. Thank you for helping me when I have questions. Thank you for offering a carrier to dock at for repairs and resupply when I’m 20,000 LY away from the nearest station and need a place to do some patchwork. Thank you for your words of encouragement and congratulation when I find or do something I feel proud of. Thank you for being decent human beings. You almost never see that, at least in my experience, in an online gaming community.
The main reason IMO that your observation is true is that the average age is somewhere in the mid 40's which boils down to more social experience which equates to being wise enough to not take everything personally, know the difference between what's worth fighting for and what isn't and probably most importantly a deficit of testosterone compared to the kids in competitive gaming for the simple reason that as men age we lose about 5% to 10% of our testosterone per year starting around age 30 or so.

There are of course exceptions...

Gosh I wish I lost more of mine. I get more resentful of puberty every year. And I'm 53.

I will add to this too, there is a lot less risk of loss in ED compared to other games, which added a lot to it. Like in eve, loosing a ship in eve is a BIG deal, and can result in literally hour, if not months of work to replace, so there is a lot more hostility and toxicity in the game because of that.

Now look at ED, if someone blows up my upgrades and tricked out vett with all engineered parts, i think im out like....95m? if that? I can make that back in like less then an hour of work. Hell lets even assume that i had to make 95m in just a starter ship, i can make that back in like 3 maybe 2 hours of work, so the risk of being screwed over is a lot less.

Generally speaking though yeah, most of the sim community is old guys who just wanna play captain kirk and be a space cowboy, thats really it and we are always willing to have fellow space cowboys join in.
