The Eve Online Thread

So, I'm at the EVE Fanfest in Rekjavik, and man, what a first day! My highlights:

Citadel Launch Trailer

Carrier Assault gameplay video

I haven't played since 2013, but this is definitely going to get me back into things :) Also have around 11,000 ISK ($90 USD) in silent auctions on some artwork,, finishes 1500 tomorrow.

Totally going to be opening a high-sec citadel for renting to other players.

Anyone else playing much Valkyrie? I was lucky enough to get a free copy with my free Kickstarter CV1

The reviews have been a bit mixed. I'm not entirely sure about it myself, I think I'll give it a bit more time. It's arcadey but that's no bad thing. It doesn't have 6dof but worse is the speed controls which so far seem to be just move or move-less both mapped to buttons so you end up spinning around trying to get targets into view. Ironically a bit of the "turret" syndrome that used to be a popular discussion on this forum. The result is unless you keep moving it can be a bit of a stomach churner.

But there is lots to like, nice atmospheric intro, launching from the tube is cool (actually after about the 10th time I just wanted to get on with it) and it can be enormously satisfying if you get the strategy right. Picking targets is quite important, not getting into to swarm and looking for strays. The guns are pretty satisfying.

Don't have an appropriate device so, no.

I wish a smidgen of this was in Elite

Love EVE playe it from day one until 9 years later. Such an immersive game but it's a hard mistress to please. It requires a lot of time and significant effort. Not a game for the family man.

The current stock of space sim could learn an awful lot from it and I get the feeling that the current stock of developers are doing their utmost to not be "like EVE".

Their mistake.

Give it a bit of time, Eve came out in may 2003. So yeah...they've had 13 years...people often forget that.

Eve Online has survived and grown for 13 years, because many people care about the social-interaction and deep sandbox that created a strong community and following.

I've been tempted to go back countless times in the past three years since I quit. If I haven't sold out my toons, I would have probably done so already.

Aye. I think ED misses this factor in its gameplay. There's little to care about really and I guess that's fine...its a different game but playing on similar premises. SC seems to be very much more switched onto the benefits of encouraging the social/game interaction however it's being crippled by the melange that the game seems to be stuck in with its schizophrenic development path.

People point to EVE and I guess generally accept that it's probably a good game, but then say that it took 13 years to be this good. That's not necessarily the case. I played EVE from day one and yes the first year was shakey but after that they really upped the ante with content, features, fixes and expansions which brought much to the game. They did this all the while improving the base mechanics of the game. I look at SC and ED and hope that they don't try to reinvent the wheel with their games. EVE does many things very well that with adaption could be applied to SC and ED but done even better as FD and CIG have EVE online lessons to learn from. It shouldn't take 13 years.

Holy crap. Iceland's President even gave a speech at the closing ceremony of EVE Fanfest, got a standing round of applause from the whole theater.

Now to get ready to rock out to this live by Permaband!

It's almost as if the expanding genre and revised interest in space games could be a good thing.

I know, exciting times.

I always wanted to play EVE but I never liked the idea of paying a sub, even for one month, on a game I couldn't at least try out first. Even still, I find it difficult to rationalize paying a sub for any game, including WoW.

Though, me..Mr. Hypocrite dropped a nice chunk of cash on the LEP (the second offering) for ED...just something about subs...I'd rather pay a lump sum and have it forever than pay a sub.

Very marmite game EVE. I loved it played for 9 years. The key to EVE is this:

JOIN A CORP. JOIN A CORP. JOIN A CORP. JOIN A CORP.

oh and join a corp.

The game is immense and very very deep now a difficult thing for a new player. A month will scratch the surface of the game if playing on your own. Joining a corp will give you a wee bump on the road to get some momentum and not to mention loads of advice and guidance.

The starter systems will have people recruiting there or the official forums if you want to read up on a few. I'd suggest anything casual, located in your timezone, operating in high and low sec and null sec (I'd avoid null sec only corps if your a real new player don't be cannon fodder just yet until you know some of the game)

It is a great game that if you click with it really rewards you. It's a lot deeper than you can first imagine and it's scales very well with the amount of effort you put into it.

JOIN A CORP.

As a F2P player you're limited to the smaller ships. I think they did this cause they couldn't compete with ED and SC.

Absolutely Varrag. They play and feel as different as you can get for sure. But there's something very special about EVE even still I'd love to jump right back in but I know it would suck my life away.

As an aside The community in eve gets a general bad press but it couldn't be further from the truth really I was I many different corps in eve with different focuses but all were mega friendly and helpful to a fault. Which is why I bang on about finding one a joining as a new player within the first few days.

Sounds like Eve gets the same bad wrap that Open mode does.
