How wonderfully... disagreeable of you [yesnod]
That reminds me of that guy in the Hitchhiker's Guide - the immortal guy - what was his name again?

Yeah that's him - if I remember correctly, he was bored so he decided to set himself the goal of insulting everyone in the entire universe. One by one. Face to face. In Alphabetical order.

Edit: Don't get me started on politicians!
The bases are described as way points suggesting where they looked is further out.
Don't think they were after el Dorado. In fact quite the opposite. From what TOW said on the logs this was a contingency and the rest confirms finding and recording ELWs and dropping some terraforming packages. What they wanted was worlds suitable for colonies preferably with nothing interesting around them.

As they had the data, needed to keep things quiet and no morals destroying 3 megaships and everybody on board was a choice to keep the secret. No other reason to scrap an asset worth billions particularly as they found ELWs
Whoever was behind it has money to burn and programmed crew to do it on board indicates this was always planned.
I don't doubt corporations were involved, the ships needed building, equipping and stocking before that went out and that would have been a big job, so meta drive likely involved in that
But whoever is behind it is a lot more savvy than corporate numpties who need another reorganisation to hide where the blame for bad management is.
Meta drive may have been a front for the job, then left to go under once that purpose was done, but I don't think they are those responsible for the plan.

I have been working my outward along the RR line past the Zurara. So far have come across 4 ELW's....no beacons. Considering that was their stated mission, and ELW's are pretty rare, I would have expected to find one by now if they exist in game.
Is there anything in the Zurara logs to suggest that they were on their way back?
I thought that they'd got to the end of the line and then everyone got wiped out - so any beacons would be on the Bubble side of Zurara.
Yeah, here's the pertinent part of the logs:
We dropped a series of beacons out here, all targeted
around Earth-like or terraformable worlds We prepped
some of the terraform candidates with seeders and
biofilters. No one can figure out why it was necessary. but
that was the mission. Just as we were turning back...
boom, those cargo-handlers went nuts.
So you might be right. Their current position may be as far out as they ever got.
