The Formidine Rift - Part 2

"Raxxla itself has eluded everyone for nearly five hundred years.
I have found that it was first mentioned in the year 2814."

2814?

Does anyone know what this is in reference to?

In a very nebulous sounding pair of speeches it's a glaring bit of specificity, no?

The novella by Robert Holdstock?

Hmm.. Maybe not.. Looking at the Elite timeline on alioth.net 2814 predates the Cobra MK I, never mind the MK III that they flew. Perhaps it's a clue?

Arthur C Clarke Rama II - 2184 - Brown was appointed to first ISA Advisory Committee. Prepared comprehensive plans for a series of major astronomical telescopes on the far side of the moon.

There are a few references to Arthur C Clarke in game, e.g. 2001 is the max cruise speed.

Rift lines

Thanks Han Zen

Ok I have taken a line form Beagle point through Rho Cassiopeia and a second unsig "Ahem" the core through Rho Cassiopeia
See images, also a link below to the Desmos calculator, you can drag a dot on the line to get Exact (ish) So-ordinates
Were heading to the bottom one now !

If you have nothing better to do... pick a nice spot for a picnic :) o7

this new information for me let me now think, The quest to search for the Formidine Rift & Raxxla is a homage to Homerus Odyssee

Also, in the salomé message :

"I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night."

Is from a poem "The Old Astronomer" from Sarah William.

Guess what : the first line of the poem refers to Tycho. Whom star's was in cassiopeia ~10° from the rift.
Probably just a coincidence and further elucubration caused by my space madness.

Just entered the Rift again. Max jumprange is about 37 and a bit LY
Just like other times i dont expect to find anything but hey.. I also play a lottery game :p

Excellent spot, perhaps the fortune teller is predicting her upcoming death...based on the poem that is.

Or it could be that Salomé is indicating that she is planning to head for the Formidine (fear, dread) Rift, despite the risks involved... and that Drew considers himself an old astronomer ;-)

I apologize, if this was discussed before, but.... What if we are looking for hidden sector or sub-sector regarding the etymology of the name Kahina. Hidden, unsearchable via galmap searching tool.

From wiki:"Her personal name is one of these variations: Daya,Dehiya, Dihya (ⴷⵉⵀⵢⴰ), Dahya or Damya (with Arabic spelling it is difficult to distinguish between these variants)."

For example we have: Hegua, Hegeia, Wredguia or Drojaea sector. See the similarity here?

Or maybe this, for example: Eafots HM-Y b0; xxxxx DA-Y axxx; xxxd AH-Y axxx; or reversed xxxx AY-A dxxx, xxxxa YH-A dxxx.

If true,this will narrow the search area significantly.

If Salomé needs a second wave of protectors i will drop anything and go join her.
I still refuse to fire on barnacles, but i will ram my ship full speed into a annaconda to save her.

Rama! Very cool! Haven't thought about Rama in years!

Brings back some memories..

For those who haven't read rendezvous with Rama you may not want to click on this..

So.. Rama was a generation ship (of sorts) wasn't it?

As I mentioned previously, I am convinced the letter sequence with perhaps the numbers following the star field name may provide further clues. It is good to see that somebody is expanding that. Some suggestions even though they may seem way out there and non-sensible, they can open up new ideas and provide some food for thought.

I think what this thread needs is for someone to take all the salient points and ideas that have been made and produce them into a single post. That way the noise and general chat that has appeared, (including my own), wont interfere with the general thought process and may provide a better picture on what really needs to be analysed. I would offer but, I have come into this rather late in the game, and am not the best person.

The data can be gathered again. If only Ed can get it, rebuy and go again :p
Don't get me wrong. I don't like it when people shoot one and other anyway. But Ed can, in it's worst case, do a rebuy and go again. Ed is like us. a simpel player unlike Salomé
Salomé (yeah i know.. also a player and i think i know who :p) is brought into the game to inspire the rift/Raxxla. Much like a UA is for the barnacles, Salomé is "for the rift"!

Great find - for sure to read a lot between the lines. Lots of food for thought. Full poem below.
.
It's a love story in its way. From the teacher to its apprentice aka the old woman to Salome (?)
.
I also found this, maybe worth to dig deeper here: John and Proebe Brashear, a couple of astronomers buried at Alleghany
Observatory, famously have a quote from the poem as their epitaph:"We have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night."
Named for him:
The crater Brashear on the Moon
The crater Brashear on Mars
Asteroid 5502 Brashear
Brashear High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1976)
Brashear Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
So, do we look for a couple, companion out there? Star system, constellation, deep space object?
.
The bit "Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too truly to be fearful of the night". Soul nebula again, or coincidence? She got enlightened by what Salome saw on earth? Her love to explore and discover?
.
Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) has a strong claim to the title "Father of Modern Astronomy" for his insistence on systematic observation. I guess this would be too obvious for a hint.
.
Another thought on 2814, is a star name, e.g. HIP 2814 (not sure if in game), or NGC 2814; but again a bit too obvious.
.
In this context, the Kipling's "The Explorer" came up as well, similar story.

The Old Astronomer (To His Pupil)

tumblr_mm5jq59bEs1qbh26io1_r1_500.gif

The Old Astronomer (To His Pupil)
by Sarah WilliamsReach me down my Tycho Brahé, – I would know him when we meet,
When I share my later science, sitting humbly at his feet;
He may know the law of all things, yet be ignorant of how
We are working to completion, working on from then to now.

Pray remember that I leave you all my theory complete,
Lacking only certain data for your adding, as is meet,
And remember men will scorn it, ‘tis original and true,
And the obloquy of newness may fall bitterly on you.

But, my pupil, as my pupil you have learned the worth of scorn,
You have laughed with me at pity, we have joyed to be forlorn,
What for us are all distractions of men’s fellowship and wiles;
What for us the Goddess Pleasure with her meretricious smiles.

You may tell that German College that their honor comes too late,
But they must not waste repentance on the grizzly savant’s fate.
Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light;
I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.

What, my boy, you are not weeping? You should save your eyes for sight;
You will need them, mine observer, yet for many another night.
I leave none but you, my pupil, unto whom my plans are known.
You “have none but me,” you murmur, and I “leave you quite alone”?

Well then, kiss me, – since my mother left her blessing on my brow,
There has been a something wanting in my nature until now;
I can dimly comprehend it, – that I might have been more kind,
Might have cherished you more wisely, as the one I leave behind.

I “have never failed in kindness”? No, we lived too high for strife,–
Calmest coldness was the error which has crept into our life;
But your spirit is untainted, I can dedicate you still
To the service of our science: you will further it? you will!

There are certain calculations I should like to make with you,
To be sure that your deductions will be logical and true;
And remember, “Patience, Patience,” is the watchword of a sage,
Not to-day nor yet to-morrow can complete a perfect age.

I have sown, like Tycho Brahé, that a greater man may reap;
But if none should do my reaping, 'twill disturb me in my sleep
So be careful and be faithful, though, like me, you leave no name;
See, my boy, that nothing turn you to the mere pursuit of fame.

I must say Good-bye, my pupil, for I cannot longer speak;
Draw the curtain back for Venus, ere my vision grows too weak:
It is strange the pearly planet should look red as fiery Mars,–
God will mercifully guide me on my way amongst the stars.

Here is "The Explorer" by Rudyard Kippling
The Explorer - Poem by Rudyard Kipling
There's no sense in going further --
it's the edge of cultivation,"
So they said, and I believed it --
broke my land and sowed my crop --
Built my barns and strung my fences
in the little border station
Tucked away below the foothills
where the trails run out and stop.

Till a voice, as bad as Conscience,
rang interminable changes
In one everlasting Whisper
day and night repeated -- so:
"Something hidden. Go and find it.
Go and look behind the Ranges --
Something lost behind the Ranges.
Lost and waiting for you. Go!"

So I went, worn out of patience;
never told my nearest neighbours --
Stole away with pack and ponies --
left 'em drinking in the town;
And the faith that moveth mountains
didn't seem to help my labours
As I faced the sheer main-ranges,
whipping up and leading down.

March by march I puzzled through 'em,
turning flanks and dodging shoulders,
Hurried on in hope of water,
headed back for lack of grass;
Till I camped above the tree-line --
drifted snow and naked boulders --
Felt free air astir to windward --
knew I'd stumbled on the Pass.

'Thought to name it for the finder;
but that night the Norther found me --
Froze and killed the plains-bred ponies;
so I called the camp Despair.
(It's the Railway Cap today, though.)
Then my whisper waked to hound me:
"Something lost behind the Ranges.
Over yonder! Go you there!"

Then I knew, the while I doubted --
knew His Hand was certain o'er me.
Still -- it might be self-delusion --
scores of better men had died --
I could reach the township living,
but ... He knows what terrors tore me ...
But I didn't ... but I didn't.
I went down the other side.

Till the snow ran out in flowers,
and the flowers turned to aloes,
And the aloes sprung to thickets
and a brimming stream ran by;
But the thickets dwined to thorn-scrub,
and the water drained to shallows,
And I dropped again on
desert-blasted earth and blasting sky ...

I remember lighting fires;
I remember sitting by them;
I remember seeing faces,
hearing voices through the smoke;
I remember they were fancy --
for I threw a stone to try 'em.
"Something lost behind the Ranges"
was the only word they spoke.

I remember going crazy.
I remember that I knew it
When I heard myself hallooing
to the funny folk I saw.
Very full of dreams that desert;
but my two legs took me through it ...
And I used to watch 'em moving
with the toes all black and raw.

But at last the country altered --
White Man's country past disputing --
Rolling grass and open timber,
with a hint of hills behind --
There I found me food and water,
and I lay a week recruiting,
Got my strength and lost my nightmares.
Then I entered on my find.

Thence I ran my first rough survey --
chose my trees and blazed and ringed 'em --
Week by week I pried and sampled --
week by week my findings grew.
Saul, he went to look for donkeys,
and by God he found a kingdom!
But by God, who sent His Whisper,
I had struck the worth of two!

Up along the hostile mountains,
where the hair-poised snowslide shivers --
Down and through the big fat marshes
that the virgin ore-bed stains,
Till I heard the mild-wide mutterings
of unimagined rivers,
And beyond the nameless timber
saw illimitable plains!

Plotted sites of future cities,
traced the easy grades between 'em;
Watched unharnessed rapids wasting
fifty thousand head an hour;
Counted leagues of water frontage
through the axe-ripe woods that screen 'em --
Saw the plant to feed a people --
up and waiting for the power!

Well, I know who'll take the credit --
all the clever chaps that followed --
Came a dozen men together --
never knew my desert fears;
Tracked me by the camps I'd quitted,
used the water holes I'd hollowed.
They'll go back and do the talking.
They'll be called the Pioneers!

They will find my sites of townships --
not the cities that I set there.
They will rediscover rivers --
not my rivers heard at night.
By my own old marks and bearings
they will show me how to get there,
By the lonely cairns I builded
they will guide my feet aright.

Have I named one single river:
Have I claimed one single acre?
Have I kept one single nugget --
(barring samples?) No, not I!
Because my price was paid me
ten times over by my Maker.
But you wouldn't understand it.
You go up and occupy.

Ores you'll find there; wood and cattle;
water-transit sure and steady,
(That should keep the railway rates down;)
coal and iron at your doors.
God took care to hide that country
till He judged His people ready,
Then He chose me for His Whisper,
and I've found it, and it's yours!

Yes, your "never-never country" --
yes, your "edge of cultivation"
And "no sense in going further" --
till I crossed the range to see.
God forgive me! No, I didn't.
It's God's present to our nation.
Anybody might have found it --
but His Whisper came to Me!

Or it could be that Salomé is indicating that she is planning to head for the Formidine (fear, dread) Rift, despite the risks involved... and that Drew considers himself an old astronomer ;-)

Additionally, finding whatever's in the rift might even be a bad thing...perhaps it's the inhibitors, and the Feds and Imps know and are trying to protect humanity ;)

Thanks Drew, your words mean a lot to me. I don't believe we are at a disadvantage, but special and some of us see things that many others miss or cannot grasp. For me it is patterns and logic.

Ha, one of my best friends husband has aspergers. Yes there was a learning curve that subtleties on human interaction seems to be ignored. He's a great guy and damn smart. The best bit, no and we have great conversations! Mainly about his work on math and physics, and meta materials.

My exploration of NGC 581 is an other dud, all the systems where explored before. (nothing special there*)

I am now heading to explore the region where SN1572 (Tycho star) is supposed to have happen.
It's a large region, and it extends into the rift.

*exception made of an amazing HMC moon around a ringed T-Tauri, with orbital inclination > 0
