Back from the boonies - what's new?
Being based in Australia, me too. I'm hoping someone transcripts it like last time. Otherwise I know what I'll be doing on the way to work tomorrow morning!

Black ... hole ... jump? What the H is that ?? Does that work ??
I'm currently in 2MASS J0230... plenty of black holes around here.
Well, what if there is a way of travelling larger distances?
Like lining up black holes and jumping between them? Why wouldent there be a hidden mechanic here?
Anyhow, will try it.
two sectors have typos...With a lot of stubbornness, I found something that might look like coordinates. It's worth what it's worth:
For short and not repeat what I had already said, there is more details
If punctuation is extracted from "Good luck, and ... right on, Commander." we obtain: ,...,. what could result in, 3.1
If we pass this "3.1" in a letter to number converter, we get X Z.
"Good luck, and X right on, Commander Y" what gives by counting the letters, and taking account other indications such as the R/R line: X: -8.300 Z: -7.900.
There is only seven systems in this sector, some apparently unreachable. I am on the way (7000ly), but if some are curious, here's the list:

I have a feeling that the UA might really be the 'key' to this story.
I have a feeling that the UA might really be the 'key' to this story.
As sort of entrance card to a hidden place, according to hints in GalNet and the comments so far, located at perhaps Cassiopeia A.
So here are some more (wild) speculations:
The UA could cause a drop out of hyperspace into witchspace while jumping to the correct system.
Therefore the UA scans the ship - it needs to collect some ship data before it is able to initiate the drop correctly.
Not everyone shall visit (find) this place. So I guess you would need one or more UA (depends on ship?)
As Drew mentioned, it depends on who is looking'. The one with an UA maybe.
For those who find the UA (the key) by accident, it needs to be as unattractive as possible to go exploring with it.
This is why the UA causes ship damage.
As the old lady says: 'You'll need a tough ship and a good pilot. It's a long way, so make sure you're prepped, no one will be around to help you out'
Tough in terms of 'robust against UA'. And 'a good pilot' who knows how to repair things, while carrying a ship-harming UA while exploring.
2.1 will possibly make it easier for us, most likely with the Meta Alloy Container which reduces the damage caused by UAs.
But again, a 'tough' pilot could have done it since a long time.
Senator Kahinas ship has been equipped with 'state of the art fuel scoop and a custom built Gutamaya discovery scanner'.
FSD and some other modules have proven fakes. So no need for long jump ranges.
The UAs lead us to the barnacles. From them one can harvest MAs which are able to cure UA damage somehow...
Although it would be optional, MAs could also be good to reduce a possible hull-damage when a ship is being dropped to witchspace (like an emergency stop).
C(aine) M(assey). The symbol on barnacles could be a combination of C and M.
Cassiopeia A shape also fits more or less to the form of the barnacle symbol (like many other things in space, I know)
The pilots of the crashed Conda were probably preparing for a travel and collected UAs, which might then have caused the crash.
And last but not least - some people obviously got jimjams when Palin asked for Meta Alloys.
With an UA container their secret could much more likely be revealed.
So they abducted Palin, tried to find out what exactly he knows and ripped him off.
Fortunately for him, the Professor didn't have any clue about the 'UA as a key' thing and was sold to Blue Hand instead of being eliminated.
.... more to follow. Perhaps Salome will enlighten us this evening... who knows.
Anyhow, I think the Cassiopeia A - UA theory is really worth to be proofed. Will give it a go.
But for that it would be really helpful to have a list of systems which have been visited with UAs already.
Do we have one?
Cheers,
Michael
Scratch that... there isn't.
Folks,
I'll be having a chat with Ed Lewis re the rift, the 'Rifters', the potential expedition and Salomé's involvement with the current DW expedition with a view to getting a little more profile for everything you been doing here in this thread. Stay tuned for details.
Cheers,
Drew.
I think Drew said there was no connection between the UAs and this.

One thing that has bothered me. Why is the amulet supposedly connected to formidine rift? For me it doesn't make sense. Kahina left both the tiara and the amulet to the ship that was smokescreen. They were in plain sight and easy to find, in case someone started to look for her. It rather looks like she resigned from the positions in both Empire and as "Salomé" or as a member of the related cult (supposedly Children of Raxxla). She knew her disappearance would be noticed, she placed them in an obvious place and perhaps even herself set the alarm to draw the attention after she had been gone maybe for moths already. It's as if she couldn't trust anyone and wanted to leave everything unnecessary behind without a trace. The hints must be elsewhere than in these two pieces of status, she wouldn't just spoil all the careful planning for something so silly as leaving such obvious clues. And the alarm... Either someone tried to enter or she had set alarm herself before leaving. :S
Of course we'll know more after today, but I wouldn't be too surprised if Salomé is not Kahina (at least not anymore). I don't see her as a woman leaving herself deliberate clues for public, that's not to say she wouldn't have done something else that we could deduce her destination from.

Mmm, sorry but it was a medallion (not an amulet) that she left with her senatorial tiara. Many people have assumed that it was related to the Dark Wheel & Children of Raxxla, but I think that assumption is incorrect. In the book (Drew's Elite:Reclamation) Salome met the old lady (& heard for the first time about the Formadine Rift) in the hospital on Ferenchia where she received her space innoculations, & then she got a fake ID bracelet from Canos in the spaceport. I think her leaving both tiara and medallion (bracelet?) behind only implies that she has decided henceforth to be her own person & independent of the strictures of her previous life.
It may be relevant that Imperial attire involved (page 49) "flowing robes of rich colours, thick and heavy medallions" and jewel encrusted tiaras were a new fad. So the medallion could also be an Imperial emblem but the exact phrasing of the Galnet article was "Lady Kahina’s Imperial tiara was found in the cockpit, along with a small medallion bearing an ancient symbol on one side and the word ‘Salomé’ on the other" which would indicate it was the ID bracelet rather than an Imperial medallion (which would have said "Kahina" & had the Imperial symbol, rather than "Salome" which was the name Hassan gave her when she had lost her memory & couldn't remember who she was). I think the symbol could then be either the Pilot Federation or Independent (Ferenchia was Independent but friendly to Empire). I have not found anywhere in the book that she received any other medallion or bracelet.
At the end of the book after handing over her powers I thought kahina handed her tiara to Luko. I may have to re read that part agane.
What do we know about the time line? Maby the events at the very end of the book, with the recording, happened when kahina went to sol?
