The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Slowly but surely making my way to the Rift. I tried crossing after I reached the Heart & Soul Nebulas and had to backtrack and I'm now heading for that bit where you actually can cross :p

Having a purpose to exploration is putting the fun back into this again :)

With thanks to Qohen Leth for the logo which I wanted to put on the CL signature banner - makes it way more colourful :)

With regards to the whole Rift thing - do we know what we're actually looking for? At the moment it seems like it could be basically anything from a surface base of some sort to some kind of artefact we haven't seen before, to something drifting or orbiting in space!

Fascinating, isn't it ;)

I think Michael Brooks' comment was made during one of the live streams but it has been a while so it may have been in a thread... but not this one
Thanks and cheers. That's already enough context to check the systems aside scan results.

We have no idea what we are looking for. However, I lean towards a system-specific artifact of some kind. If it were a spacefaring alien civilisation you'd think they'd have spread to quite a few systems and we'd have run into one of their ships by now, as there's quite a few people in the area.

The only logical conclusion I can have it must be the Bovomit systems and we need to find out wat it requires to enter it.

when you think of the jump range the old lady did have, she must have passed the Formidine bridge or the Far bridge and the Formidine rift is between them.
That is how I look at it when Drew said the Map is broadly correct

I also think a elite explorer can enter it or a elite explorer can confirm im wrong,

Being Elite explorer is not locked behind a slot because you become one because you have wanderlust

Also a fun fact, we should do a psychoanalyse on Drew to find clues,

why does he reply or rep certain posts

How I experience how the devs and Drew have setup these easter eggs in game it is a bit sadistic

I don't know if we are looking for anything as big as a dyson sphere but my guess we are looking for some kind of station we haven't seen yet. Not sure if a honk would find it since it's a station. Maybe the engineers would upgrade the ADS to find things like that.

Then again it could be a body that has a specific description.

.
Which ship and what's the jump range?

Presumably the old lady flew a Cobra Mk III... but it would have been before the current generation of FSDs. Many people have drawn the conclusion that the old lady is Rebecca Tyley from Drew's earlier "Oolite" series of novels ... though those novels are not canon and Drew himself has not confirmed her identity. A standard Cobra Mk III from that era could only jump 7 light-years before the ship would need to refuel so her statement that she made it "as far as the Formidine Rift" is most plausible if taken to mean she reached the beginning of the Rift but never personally crossed it.

I think it's more probable that she used a Cobra with the FE2/FFE type hyperdrive. That would give her 27ly with a class 3 drive.

Possibly ...

So here's a proposal: Lets explore the R/R line forensically. I'm still about 6,000Ly from "the Bubble." Once I get back I'm going to head for Reorte ... and follow the R/R line in my Mk III Cobra while limiting my jump distance to just 7Ly. If my theory is correct then as soon as I reach a point where I can no longer maintain that general bearing, I'll have reached the point where the old lady says "the stars thin out." If someone else can follow the same route using the 27Ly limit ... that would be awesome!

Or, you could simply Watch the nearby system distances in the nav panel.

Once they exceed 7, or 27 or whatnot 3-5 times in a row, you probably are in the "dead end" region for said range.
Much easier/quickier and should provide a good quick'n'dirty estimate.

Sure but blah, blah, blah journey ... blah, blah, blah destination. Might be fun to try and retrace the old lady's path ... who know what might be found along the way? Seriously, until we get more clues we're all just waiting for Godot here ... no way of knowing what will unlock the mystery. Maybe it "requires" a Mk III Cobra? Or a cargo hold of Sap 8 Containers. Or being high on a case of Lestian Evil Juice ...

I think some wrecked stations it probably on the right sort of lines.

If you look at the news thumbnails, they are largely created with in game assets, then tarted up a bit in photoshop. Whilst they could be just art and not in game assets, there are some that show wrecked, or half built stations. The Asp cargo scooping for example. In the background is what looks like a trashed outpost. Flat artwork or an as yet unseen in game asset?

I would love it to be a station, even a useless one. I would love it even more if we KNEW it was a station, we could go back to Honk/Scoop. However, AFAIK, all systems with a station (even those without a planet) have a population, so would be easily spotted on the GalMap with a filter. I am going to assume that the mystery is not that easy.
