I assumed rank-locked referred to faction rank, not pilot federation rank. However, point taken. I will point out though that this thread is nigh on 200 pages long. ;p
Im thinking its more aimed at people who have played earlier versions of elite / oolite /FFE etc ... references that they would get

Not wanting to sound like a broken record - I did my best to summarise all that had been learned so far in my journal (up to about page 150 of this thread
)I did ask Acheron to add it to the OP but I assume he has IRL things going on as he's been pretty quiet of late.
Anyway, here's hoping the journal serves it's purpose as a rundown of all the current findings, thoughts and theories. I was going to add some stuff around asterisms in there today. There has been something about three dots that keeps cropping up throughout this mystery... and whilst in the rift last week I did spot something and thought 'oh, that looks like orion's belt' and didn't give it a second thought.
Stars arranged in a line of three dots could be some sort of a way finder in this.
Also speaking of asterisms, I've been trying to upload this picture of a 'wolf' for a couple of days now. Are image uploads broken on the forum right now?

No worries, there's a lot to digest, some of it steak, some of it Hostess Twinkies with the occasional craft beer and Boone's Farm to wash it down. I'd suggest scanning through the first post and then look at Dommarraa's link (next to last link on the first page and in his sig). While that doesn't cover all the smorgasbord of things to digest it's certainly the main course.

I think he's referring to Oolite with a few references in his book but they were just nods to Oolite, including the "friendliest place this side of Riedquat" which was from the Oolite forums - mentioned here = https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=239212&p=3771457&viewfull=1#post3771457 - I may be wrong though.. Maybe he used that nod to also hide a clue, but the phrase came before ED was created so he would have had to crowbar it in a fair bit if it's actually a clue as to where to look

I know the dark wheel symbol is user created (therefore probably not cannon) but I couldn't resist trying to figure out what the circular lines in the central part of the tiara symbol actually mean.
I had already seen this pattern before but I couldn't remember where... but I knew they were far from random.
So I tried different possibilities and ended up associating them with numbers based on their length:
After a few tries, I obtained 41592654.... as in 3.141592654.
So the symbols represents Pi except without the "3,1"..
Then it kicked in, The first time I saw this pattern was in 2008, it was used to represent Pi in... a crop cirlce.
Does it have any link to the rift, or was it used purely for aesthetics? probably the latest. But you know, just my 2c

Ya I just think that if we accept that there is no rank or any constraints on finding them then why say it depends on who goes looking ... I think its because the references relate to oolite / old elite ... But ya ... I havent had much luck with that yet anyway

Hang on to your data guys. I'm predicting there will be a CG soon to create a new galactic power from a current player faction. I would assume that raising the factions influence will determine who becomes the new power - and handing in exploration data is a great way to turbo charge influence gains. I have a strong suspicion that CoR with Salomé as its enigmatic leader will be in the running, so if anyone even idly supports what they are doing, we should hand in our data to them.
This is all an assumption on my part, but I'm hanging on for the CGs to start in case I'm guessing correctly

the area of the RR line between the Heart and Bubble nebulas is GLUDGOE .... not french, but GLUD in Welsh is Glue ... which was made from Whales
Oh and Welsh was a favorite language for signage in Oolite ....

Replied to your YouTube question. My Asp has a 34.5 jump range. I was able to cross the Heisenberg Passage without any fuel mats.
